Music that Describes Dennis

Dennis Balch was nominated by an anonymous colleague.

Mr. Balch definitely embodies the definition of a LifeChanger! He has worked for Cocke County School System since 1977 and has served in a variety of roles, from teacher and coach to Assistant Principal and District Attendance Supervisor. He understands that the first step to educating a child is getting them to school. Mr. Balch has gone out of his way over the years to make sure children attend school daily so the teachers can provide a quality education. He is patient, kind, professional, and morally and ethically sound. He meets and works with schools, parents, guardians, law enforcement, and human services departments to assure that truant/absent children are cared for first and foremost, then directed in the path needed to assure their attendance in school.

Mr. Balch wears many hats in his role and does so with professionalism and compassion. Although certain aspects of his job are clear and concise to others, it's the time he spends behind the scenes that makes him a LifeChanger. He spends a lot of time going to home visits and courts, verifying countless reports, making sure state and federal guidelines are met, and attending conferences to stay in compliance and educate himself on up-to-date practices. His job, though not a glamorous one, offers rewards when he sees a student who has had attendance issues walk across the stage to receive a diploma.

He works hard daily to reach every student who has attendance issues. He works to get school officials, faculty, and staff to offer incentives and encouragement so students can achieve their attendance requirements and goals. Mr. Balch strives to be fair, diligent, and open-minded without compromising professionalism. Rewards are given throughout the year to students with perfect attendance to encourage compliance.

Needless to say, sometimes a student falls through the cracks and is unreachable due to circumstances beyond their control. These losses are never easy for Mr. Balch, and he can recall times when it has been hard to continue, but he never complains. On several occasions, he has said, It's all about the child and their need." His faith and core values have allowed him to have a true compassion and concern for the students, his co-workers, and people he comes in contact with on a daily basis. He has an unwavering dedication to the students of Cocke County and their future. To say that he is "passionate" about his job is an understatement.

"You could speak to anyone in the district and they will tell you he is diligent and fair when it comes to his profession," said his nominator. "I truly feel that Mr. Dennis Balch is a LifeChanger! It would be such an honor to bring recognition and have him finally rewarded for his contribution throughout the years."

Dennis is my uncle (in-law) He’s quite honestly one of the best men I know. He inquires about each person’s life, and is the first to encourage everyone in the family. He has a quiet strength, and is always ready to tell you how his faith and his relationship with God have shaped him. He’s a supportive husband, father, grandfather, and uncle in-law! He takes the time to do little things that mean so much to our family. When he found out that I was thinking about returning to nursing school, at the next family gathering he gave me a little Bible small enough to keep in scrubs. Those are the unseen things that Dennis does to change and impact lives. These are a few of the reasons why I believe he is so deserving of this award. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to let him know how much he means to our family.

I’ve had the pleasure to know Dennis Balch for over 40 years. He is one of the most genuine and best people I know. He truly cares about others and has made it his life work to help others whether it be through school, church, coaching, or just daily life. He is always there with a kind and wise word. When it comes to a “life changer”, I can think of no one that embodies this principle more than Dennis Balch. I am honored and fortunate to have him in my life and I know that your organization would be extremely proud having him represent it as winner of this award. Jeff France

He Is an humble leader and puts God first in all that he does. We are grateful for Dennis, Ann and the boys. You all are family to us.

My dad is definitely a LifeChanger. He lives out his faith in everything that he does. He is the best role model a son can have. His dedication to God, family and work are balanced. He does not think of his occupation as a job. He believes it is his calling and that God has placed him in the different roles at the appropriate time. He could have retired years ago; however, he is committed to changing people's lives in his current role. He is a deacon in his local church and has a servant attitude. He much deserve this recognition and it is my pleasure to be called his son.

Dennis works very hard every day in a concerted effort to improve attendance in our county schools. He works with administrators, students, their families, the court system, community agencies, and the community as a whole to communicate the importance of attendance and the accountability that goes along with it for the schools. He has been working in our system for over 40 years and I obviously admire that and although he has done many great things in his job over the years, Dennis is an even better human being. There's not a whole lot of bad about Dennis that I have ever heard and I have worked for the school system for 26 years myself. I think Dennis deserves whatever recognition he can get and this nomination is a tribute to his dedication as an educator.

His career has been rather a calling to help develop our greatest resource, our children. he has LITERALLY changed the lives of thousands of humans. This man has been a big part of my life from a very young age, see he's my uncle, i also had him in class in high school, i always admired the way he never made an exception for me, and of course i didn't like it then but now as i have a grandbaby myself, oh how i wished he was still teaching, which he does but its not at school. See when i was in high school, we prayed, said pledge of allegiance and then had class...now its wrong if we do this, but as for Dennis, he may not have done it where anyone could see it but you can bet if a child asked him to pray he would, that man is such a good man ....i remember telling my aunt that him and his wife make me want to be better...and if anyone deserves this Dennis Balch does....he hasn't only changed my life but there's so many other lives he's changed....he if so worthy of this....its unbelievable!!

Ann Balch Posted over a year ago

I am so humbled to learn my husband has been nominated. I can truly say that he sincerely cares for children and especially their need to get an education. Growing up in a family of 11 and losing his father at age nine, he knows what obstacles some children face. At an early age, he had a desire to teach and work with young people. He gives God the credit for his education. He works diligently to find ways to help children stay in school because he knows how important an education is. He has always told our sons that an education is a “gift” that no one can take away from you. I can truthfully say he is a godly man and he “walks the talk” of a Christian and NO is not perfect but has a “Jesus” kind of love for helping others.

As a staff member of the Tennessee State Department of Education, I have worked with Mr. Dennis Balch for fourteen years. Mr. Balch is the definition of a complete and dedicated educator. I have not met any one in my thirty-four years with the department throughout the State of Tennessee or in other states in my travels that is more caring about the students he serves or the individuals that work with him. I worked beside Mr. Balch for many years on the Attendance Steering Committee. He was knowledgeable, a leader with important ideas that he knew would make a difference in the life's of students across the State, considerate of others, the first to volunteer, and the first to be on the job to serve others. Mr. Balch is the first person that I call at least once a week to discuss questions and important issues that I need an answer that will influence the attendance policies in the state of Tennessee. As great of an educator that Mr. Balch has become, he is even a greater person. I have never met anyone that cares more about others than him. His Christian values and his prayers for myself and so many individuals that he has met or not met has changed the life's of these individuals. Mr. Dennis Balch's faith is the definition of a true LifeChanger.
