Fernando Cepeda was nominated by a colleague, Leisa Blalock.
Every day, Mr. Cepeda goes above and beyond for his students. Science Academy is a Title 1 school with an ESL poplulation of over 70%. Many of Mr. Cepeda's students will be first generation high school graduates. He inspires his students to think and learn by doing. His class is very hands-on, with the students building circuts, programming Arduino chiips and building robots. He gives his free time to continuing his education by becoming a certified Project Lead The Way instructor, which allows him to teach dual credit classes. He's also the advisor for the Robotics Team, which takes up his after school and weekend time, too. Mr. Cepeda is a LifeChanger for students who need a positive male role model in their life!
Mr. Cepeda has always been passionate as a teacher. He truly wants the best for us and he wants all his students to make it far in life. If anyone deserves this award it's him, he truly wants to change lives for the better.

Mr. Cepeda is a hard working teacher and an incredible mentor. I took his engineering class as well as the robotics group. In the class he was a more hands on teacher where he will try to show you how something works and let’s you try it on your own. However in robotics he let you do the project on your. Trying to let the group actually work together and brainstorm for solutions. One saying that I will never forget because he likes to say it a lot was “if you fail try try again.” That saying is very true when it came to robotics as well as in life. That’s why Mr. Cepeda is one of the best teachers there is.
For most of my high school career I didn’t know which field I was going to end up studying, but after taking Mr. Cepeda’s engineering class I fell in love with all things engineering. It felt like the only class I could look forward to. I eventually joined the robotics team he was the mentor of and we went on to get ranked pretty high among the other teams with our robot even though we were mostly all new to robotics. He is a great teacher and an even better mentor!

I've known Mr. Cepeda for about four years now. Tenth grade year he was my concept engineering teacher, followed by being my robotics coach. Being new to the high school I was attending at the time Mr. Cepeda made the enviorment of the classroom welcoming. When I no longer attended the high school Mr. Cepeda gradually check up on me to see if I was heading in the right path. I will always see Him as a strong leader and a great mentor.

I met Fernando while we were taking a class at UT Arlington, and we've been close friends ever since. During our time together in this class, I got see just how smart and driven Fernando is. He made getting through the class fun with his positive attitude and fun personality. Fernando is one of the most successful, optimistic and smart people that I know. I can hear in our conversations how much he enjoys teaching and helping young students further their education. He is just the example every student needs from his or her teacher. I am so proud of him.

You'll pardon me if we're on a first name basis. Fernando is a former student of mine! I was his advisor during his undergraduate work, and later, his supervisor when he worked as a part-time tutor for the TRIO, SSS Grant Program. Of course we advisors don't have "favorite" students, but we do have memorable, and invaluable contributors. Fernando could help students in multiple subjects (Spanish, Computer Science, Math, and Developmental Math). I am not surprised he has maintained his generous, giving spirit, his leadership and exemplary work ethic. Very proud of you, young sir!
Mr. Cepeda is definitely the best college prep teacher one could ever take in high school. I started as a student and now I have the opportunity to work in the same building and to this day, I still learn new things from him every day I see him. As a person, he is amazing, patient, strict, but honest. He is the perfect representation of the real world after high school. I'm very glad to have the opportunity to not only be his student, but the chance to be a friend and be able to learn from him whenever I need the help. I had Mr. Cepeda as a teacher and a mentor for robotics. He never sugar coated any of the work that was provided. I have acquired or improved my skills in organization, time management, and team work. Overall, the experience that I went through in his class and robotics team made me a better person and student! He always pushed everyone to work hard on every assignment and taught us everything he could, a lot of things that now a days I really have used and look back at when he told us to be professional in our work.
