Luis Rey was nominated by his colleague, Imelda Hernandez.
Time and time again, Mr. Rey has proven his ability to make an abundance of planning choices for his students.
"I was able to work with him with as his special education co-teacher for two years," said Hernandez. "During that time, he was able to persuade United Airlines to “take off” the new school year with airline representatives on the first day of school. His class was featured on our local Fox News station, and believe me, the students really took off on the right flight plan toward success. It's still incredible for his students to have a learning center with four actual airplane seats in his classroom. The following year, he convinced the helicopter to take a morning detour to our campus and land in our school’s back yard field. This was another incredible opportunity that all our students were able to enjoy. They were able to have multiple question and answer sessions with the pilots."
Mr. Rey has been a pillar in the community because he leads by example. He and his family have begun neighborhood outreach meetings at the neighboring Holy Trinity Church in order to provide information and resources to the families of Cimarron Elementary. He has been able to help many families after Hurricane Harvey, too. Every year, he and his wife/colleague, Mrs. Martina Sonia Rey, organize "Meet You at the Pole," where students and parents are invited for a prayer before the school year begins. He and his wife are both remarkable, and Cimarron Elementary is lucky to have the Rey family.
"Mr. Rey’s record of excellent citizenship is also demonstrated, as he has also worked with our voting booths for local, state and national elections," said Hernandez. "He is truly an educator who has high moral and ethical standards in every aspect of his life, both in and outside the classroom. He is truly deserving of this award."
