Daniel Diaz was nominated by an anonymous parent of a student.

Mr. Diaz is second to none. Currently, Mr. Diaz is the assistant principal of Miami Shores Elementary School. During his first year, he jumped right into the challenge and acclimated to the parents, students, and staff within the first week of school. His infectious energy and positive attitude makes a positive impact on his students' lives. At any given moment, you’ll witness Mr. Diaz mentoring a student, providing love when needed, and being the role model that many young boys lack at home. During his first year as assistant principal, Mr. Diaz began several initiatives to improve student achievement. These initiatives were accepted by all teachers, and in doing so, the school was able to move from a C rating (after 5 years) to a B rating.

Mr. Diaz is the type of administrator who takes the time to mentor the students and work with parents and other community members. You can always hear him reminding students that they can be anything they choose to be, if they put the effort and dedication that is required. He has constantly reminded students of their self-worth! Regardless of the time of day, Mr. Diaz will ensure he has the energy to speak to any child that needs someone to listen.

His dedication to his school and students is evident by the time his truck is seen in the parking lot. As early as 6:00 am, you may see his car in the parking lot, as Mr. Diaz sits in the office working on preparing for the day ahead. As you drive in the afternoon, you will often see his truck still in the parking lot at 4:30-5:00 PM.

Mr. Diaz’s history of transforming schools is nothing new. Prior to becoming an assistant principal, Mr. Diaz was a mathematics transformational coach at Earlington Heights Elementary School. During his time there, he worked to build teachers’ capacity and improve student achievement in math. His leadership in the math department enabled the school to double the percent of students proficient on standardized exams in two years. His passion for the students was always evident.

The bonds Mr. Diaz forms with his students are lifelong. In his office, you will see a picture of him standing next to a high school graduate. When asked, he will simply explain that the student in that picture was a student he had in 2nd grade. Mr. Diaz tutored and mentors that student, working with them until this day.

"Many would say that Superman is a fictional hero, but in my opinion, Mr. Diaz is our hero, and our real life Superman," said his nominator. "He is a caring individual with a passion for teaching and learning. He’ll always be a LifeChanger in my eyes, but this recognition will ensure that he understand how appreciated he is."

Mr. Diaz is that unsung hero that does WHATEVER it takes. I’m glad he’s being recognized for his hard word, dedication, compassion, and commitment to students. I’ve witnessed him clean the school, walk students to classic, counsel students, and direct traffic... ALL in one day! Mr. Diaz know that the Village of Miami Shores knows your dedicated to our school. We’re all rooting for you.

Adrian Posted over a year ago

Mr. Diaz is my all time favorite teacher. His life lessons are still true today, 7 years after being his student. His dedication to teaching us was amazing. I vividly remember sitting in his class using the blocks to learn how to regroup when subtracting. He always ensured we understood why we were doing the steps in math. It was never because he said, there was a reason for each mathematical step we took and he wanted us to know the reason. Thanks to his dedication in us understanding math, I’m a better math student today. Glad you’re being recognized for all your hard work and dedication to students.

Raquel Posted over a year ago

Mr. Diaz is one of the most energetic, genuine, compassionate person that I know. He cares about his students, school, family, and anyone that he comes across. Describing him as hardworking and loving is not sufficient, it does not do him justice. Everything mentioned above is accurate and does a decent job at describing Mr. Diaz; however, he is more than that. He builds relationships with his students and ensures they work to their maximum potential.

Ana Rubio Posted over a year ago

Mr. Diaz, So happy to see someone has nominated you. You truly deserve to win. While at Earlington Heights Elementary School, as a math coach, you were an inspiration to many of the students and the staff. It was always a pleasure working with you. You are a true educator where you placed our urban students needs first. You are amazing! May you win!

Don Clerveaux Posted over a year ago

Daniel treats every one of the students he works with like family! He's a great administrator, mathematician and family man. During hurricane Irma he offered room at his place for me and my family of 4. I've personally seen him defend our students against adult strangers, and students from other schools (on a field trip), using racial slurs and inappropriate comments. He regularly plans school events while making time for his lovely family. The world needs more people like Daniel Diaz!

Steven Roberts Posted over a year ago

If anyone deserves this award it’s Mr. Diaz. He’s the unsung hero of ANY school. He does WHATEVER it takes for students to receive the education they deserve. I have witnessed Mr. Diaz clean the school, walk students to class, be a listening ear when needed, eat with students, and even lay on the ground to support a student having an episode. He’s chased runners out of the building while wearing slacks and dress shoes. His smiling face can turn any child’s day around. God bless you Mr. Diaz.

Susan C. Posted over a year ago

Simply stating that Mr. Diaz is amazing would be an understatement and a disservice to what he really is. Mr. Diaz’s passion is evident in his work ethic, energy, demeanor, and how he speaks about his job. He once told me that he does not consider it a job since he truly enjoys what he does. Any school would be lucky to have Mr. Diaz be part of their team. His commitment to the students is never questioned. If all educators cared just a third as much as he did, student achievement would be inevitable.

Katherine B. Posted over a year ago

A person’s character is always evident in how they portray themselves. Mr. Diaz is the type of person that everyone looks up to. His passion for education is contagious. All his students catch the math bug when they’re in his class; you can’t help but love math when he’s your teacher. You deserve this and much more.

Alison Posted over a year ago

Excellent educator! The only surprise about this nomination is that it wasn’t sooner. Congrats Mr. Diaz!

Damian Posted over a year ago

My son was in Mr. Diaz’s class. He was a quiet student who struggled academically. Since he was never a behavior issue he’d go unnoticed. However, Mr. Diaz saw something in him and would constantly support him while he struggled. He would meet with me and provide resources that I could utilize at home to support what was going on in the classroom. That year my son made the most growth, both academically and socially. You see, he was the quiet kid because he was afraid of being wrong. In Mr. Diaz’s class there was not wrong, there was opportunities for growth. Thor outlook to learning allowed my son to open up and succeed. We owe it to Mr. Diaz and his perseverance in ensuring my son would succeed.

Ashley O. Posted over a year ago

I remember walking into MAE 4310 anxious about what to expect. You see, I despise math. Numbers and I have never been friends. I pushed back my internship two semesters because I refused to take this course. I knew it was going to be difficult and I had to prepare for it. Mr. Diaz started the class with an icebreaker. He had each of us say what the word math meant to us. My word/phrase was nightmare, my worst enemy. He looked me straight in the eyes and said “if I can’t change your mindset my the end of the semester, I’ve failed as your professor”. That’s when I knew I was meant to take this class with Mr. Diaz. Every concept taught was making sense. He broke down his lectures and kept us all engaged. He knew what misconceptions we were going to have prior to him even teaching. He would answer EVERY question I asked and not once did he make me feel inferior for asking. He change my mindset that semester. With his guidance, encouragement, and support, I was able to pass my certification exams. I owe my career to Mr. Diaz. I KNOW he changed my life! Mr. Diaz you don’t get enough credit for what yuh do, but know that you’re making a difference in the lives of every person you meet. Thank you for all that you did and will continue to do.

Kayla Posted over a year ago

Best person I have ever met. He inspired my son to always do his best. As a single mom it was hard for me to keep up with all of Viktor’s school work. Mr. Diaz noticed that Viktor needed a role model, mentor, and advocate. He stepped right up and inspired my son to always work hard. That was the best school year I had with Viktor. He looks up to Mr. Diaz and is always grateful for everything he did. Mr. Diaz is a true life changer in our eyes.

Adrian R. Posted over a year ago

Mr. Diaz is my all time favorite teacher. There were three Adrians in our class. He always and I mean ALWAYS made sure we felt like an individual. I’ve had teachers call me by last name or the other student by their last name so they don’t get confused. With 3 Adrians he never got confused and never called us by our last name. We were our own people in his class and I loved it. Congrats Mr. Diaz and I hope you win!

Stella Posted over a year ago

Mr. Diaz was my teacher years ago. I’m now a high school student. I remember being new to his class, all the students had their name tags nicely placed on their desks. My desks are the table by the computer. He didn’t have a desk for me just yet. By lunch time, Mr. Diaz has found a desk, created a name tag, and placed all books inside the desk. He incorporated me with a group and apologized for not having things ready that morning. That was the first time a teacher had ever apologized. As an 8 year old I knew he was great. He wanted his students to feel welcomed and always instilled respect and compassion with all his students. It was ok to be wrong in his class, but it was not ok to not try to give up. Mr. Diaz you’ve been and will always be my favorite teacher.

Vanessa Posted over a year ago

I can’t be the only one that got choked up by that nomination, right? I can’t help but think how loving and demanding Mr. Diaz was as a teacher. Always demanded the best from us because he genuinely loved us. I didn’t want to let him down, knowing that he would put so much effort Into enduring his students are actually succeeding with lessons being taught, and life long lessons.

We were all his kids and he guided us to creating life-long bonds with one another.

Mr. Diaz is the type of person that you’ll never forget. I was in in class almost decade ago and I vividly remember being taught by an energetic, passionate teacher. He was always and I mean ALWAYS enthusiastic when it came to teaching. We had not choice but to love math as much as he did (if it’s even possible). You’re still my favorite teacher.

David Posted over a year ago

I knew you were amazing. You touched my life when I was in your class and it seems that you’ve continued stay who you are. I’m so happy for you! Congrats, you deserve this and much more. The only downside of having you as a teacher in elementary school is that you set the bar high for other teachers and not a single teacher has been as amazing as you. My expectations as to what a teacher should be has been skewed since having you as a teacher.

From my first day sitting in Mr. Diaz’s class 6 years ago I knew he was nothing short of extraordinary. His level of energy after working full time at the school was baffling. He knew how to keep adult learners engaged and he ignited a passion for math. His class is the only class I never missed. His class was always full, students never wanted to miss a lesson. You see, many lessons were related to math, but the connections he made to teaching was always there. Mr. Díaz is caring and understanding. Mr. Diaz will always be my favorite professor, he understood me and wanted me to succeed. His constant motivation is the reason I was able to graduate. After the semester ended I would email him with questions regarding other classes and he would always respond and kept pushing me to finish. He would say life will have hurdles, but who’s to say we can’t run and jump right over them. Thank you Mr. Diaz! I’m now working at a charter school and implanting everything I learned from you.

Mr.Diaz made a huge impact in my life. He was the first teacher and only teacher who made me understand math and inspired me to try harder. Thanks to his help i became a better person and i grew up wanting to pass my expectations with everything that comes my way . Without his help, I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy school and learn at the same time.

Antonella Dussan Posted over a year ago

Mr. Diaz was my second grade math teacher (I am currently a sophomore in high school). Of course, it has been many years since I've been taught or guided by him, but even the lessons he taught me then I still remember whether they be actual math of course, or life lessons. I don't have a natural knack for math, but his encouragement motivated me to love math; in other words, he made the process of learning interesting and that is what I try to focus on even nowadays. Mr. Diaz is an astounding teacher and I am 100% certain that he deserves this award. I can speak on behalf of all the students and lives that he has touched. He is a life changer, but even then that is an understatement for everything he has done for us as students.

Mr. Diaz was my daughter’s 2nd grade teacher at Academir West 8 years ago and she says he remains her favorite teacher. He was very young and new to the school; however, from day one he took the reigns and made his young students want to learn. He taught them the academics but also taught them respect. He made learning fun so his students were eager to come to his class to learn and have fun. I am not surprised that he has done so well in his profession and know he will continue to grow and touch and mold young lives. Mt. Diaz is the true meaning of being a teacher, mentor and professional.

Our son's life changed for the better after meeting Mr. Diaz. He has made a huge impact in his life. There are teachers that go to work to get paid and then there are teachers that go to work to make a difference. Mr. Diaz is the type of teacher that goes to work to make a difference. He listens to his students and is the role model that many of them need. Mr. Diaz is data-driven, but he knows that the test scores of students does not define who they are. In doing, our son was able to grow in math with Mr. Diaz. His sense of worth and self-esteem sky rocketed after spending a year with Mr. Diaz. After believing in him and working with him, our son was finally proficient. His joy for going to school was back. Mr. Diaz I doubt you are told how much you mean to students and their families, but know that you have a special place in our hearts. We constantly have you and your family in our prayers and memories of your teaching are often conversations we have around the dinner table.

Mr. Diaz was an excellent professor. The best I had FIU! His passion for teaching was always evident. He would joke about never forgetting my name since his daughter’s name was also Melanie. His energy well into our class is what made us want to learn. If he could have that much energy after working all day, we felt that as a class we could feed off of his energy. By far my favorite professor and class at FIU.

Well written nomination. All of it is true. Mr. Diaz is an excellent person. He deserves this award and so much more.

Adriana Posted over a year ago

Superman indeed! If there’s something that Mr. Diaz can’t do, it can’t be done. This is great representation of Mr. Diaz during the school day. At FIU, Mr. Diaz was a phenomenal Professor. Always taking the time to engage all his students into the content being taught. He always stated that a classroom should be ran the way we would want our own children’s class to be ran. Now as a parent and teacher I know what meant. I’m still learning from his life lessons and I haven’t had him as a professor for about 6 years. Mr. Diaz is a nurturing human being that always cared for his students. His class was always upbeat and informative. He’s a wise individual that is a life changer. Had he not reignited my passion for education that semester, I may have dropped out of school. I owe my career to his passion and pushing me to the be best I can be. Thank you will never be enough.

Josh Posted over a year ago

This recognition is not only warranted but necessary. Mr. Diaz goes above and beyond in everything that he does. I vividly remember sitting in his class Thursday evenings, watching Mr. Diaz engage all 24 of us in the content being delivered. There was never a dull moment in class. M.E.A.N was acronym he one used that I too use in my class. Making Excellence A Necessity. Mr. Diaz is nothing but excellent. I can never thank him enough for everything I leaned during his course. Not only did I learn how to be a better math teacher; I learned how to be a better student and individual. Thank you Mr. Diaz, you truly deserve this recognition.

Jackie Posted over a year ago

Mr. Diaz was an amazing professor at FIU. He would constantly talk about his "kiddos" (aka his students) and would always push our thinking. He would remind us that it was a teacher's role to ensure students learned. Their home-life should not be used as an excuse. He cares about his students. Often times he would break down math content and ensure that we, as college students, understood it. He's passionate, caring, hard-working, and deserving of this award.
