Tessie Sanders-Matlock was nominated by a colleague, Sharon Kay Snowton.
Mrs. Sanders-Matlock is an ESL Teacher at Highlands Elementary in CHISD. She holds a BA from Grambling State University and a MA from Concordia University in Texas. She participated in a Principal Certification Program in 2012, and presented in Reading and Writing Workshops for teachers in Dallas ISD for Division I in 2012- 2013. Mrs. Sanders-Matlock also works part time at a Junior College, where she helps to prepare the youth coming for today's work place, and writes grants to help young people earn scholarships to attend college.
At Highlands Elementary School, she is well respected and has a reputation for knowing and understanding Texas school law. She adds to the development of Highlands' school atmosphere; she is a leader in the school and has a record of excellent performance, both in Dallas ISD and Cedar Hill ISD. She produces a nurturing atmosphere and requests the best of her students. When asked about her career as an educator, she says, "I didn't choose teaching. It was chosen for me. I hail from a generation of educators." Mrs. Sanders-Matlock carries the torch of learning and is a LifeChanger to all whose lives she touches.

You inspire those you meet-be it answering questions to their desire to attend Grambling, or motivating them to apply for a scholarship or grant. You go above and beyond by helping them find a scholarship or grant. You take it further by writing grants to help young people to go to college.
You make a difference in the lives of these high school students by visiting their campuses with information on how to attend Grambling. Your ancestors were part of the founding members of Grambling, and you carry that torch on. You visit the homes of students to get the information to them. It means so much to a child who otherwise would not be able to attend college.
I see the positive leadership and influence of the work you do daily. Your students are learning so much, and it is because of the love and care you give to them. You are a wonderful teacher and co-worker. You have a proven record of professional excellence in Dallas ISD and here in Cedar Hill ISD. In your volunteer hours working with high school students you show commitment to building the nurturing environment they need to support their learning.
You still work at the Junior College, while giving of yourself at Highlands, at high school career fairs and your support of Grambling. Your help that you give never tires. You are always working for education. You are always helping young people to run towards their futures, a very positive future because of what you do. You help them by sharing legacy! Tessie has had a passion for education and teaching children since I've know her...That's over 25 years! She has always shown dedication towards pursuing her goals as a teacher and administrator. Her perseverance is and has always been admirable. During times when others would have given up, Tessie did not. When studying and preparing for the PRAXIS, she never quit...even if she failed. She dusted herself off and tried again until she obtained her certification. She is very humble in her accomplishments and her heritage. I am proud to share a miniscule aspect of her background just to state that she is a proud descendant of Charles P. Adams, the first president of Grambling, because I, too, am a proud alumnus of that world famous educational institution. Tessie is a true embodiment in the flesh of the philosophy of Grambling, "where everybody is somebody". She instills that belief into all children and not just to her students. A world changer does that,change the world of a person whether it be one person at a time or groups of persons every time an opportunity that is afforded.

I nominate my wife Mrs. Tessie Sanders-Matlock as the Life Changer of the Year. She is my lovely wife and cares deeply for her family and Jesus. She works hard to change lives all over. She is committed to seeing everyone prosper and get the most out of their life. She is a well respected teacher at Highlands Elementary and well respected First lady at Lamp & Light Ministries. She is committed to youth both in education and the spiritual in having them be all they can be. She loves recruiting our youth to Grambling State University and encouraging others to attend HBCU's.
