Nydia Alvarez-Alonzo was nominated by a colleague, Jose Huerta Jr.

Mrs. Alonzo has been employed at Mission CISD for over 13 years. Year in and year out, she has always taken initiative to take charge of committees with specific school issues. She tries her best to be a part of every campus committee. Recently, she offered to sponsor breakfast for the staff, which they were not expecting. She started a chain reaction where many staff members volunteered to help. She is always willing to take the time to help any and all staff members.

As a regular participant of local school board meetings, Mrs. Alonzo provides the staff with much needed information on any changes that may affect them. Many of the staff members go to her for assistance on any issues that affect them, such as compensation, benefits, grievances, etc. because she is also her school district TCTA (Teacher Union) president.

On top of this, Mrs. Alonzo is a fifth grade science teacher. Many students still come back to her, not only to say hello and catch up, but to seek advice, as well. Every year, she invites students and families to her beach trash clean up. In past years, she has developed a science action club that creates and maintains a vegetable garden on campus. Additionally, there is also a community citrus fiesta each year, and she educates her fifth grade students on the history of the event. At this event, her students use dried grapefruit to build mini-floats.

"There are no limits to the help Mrs. Alonzo provides. She does so much for the students, staff, and the community," Huerta Jr. said. "The Leo Marcell Elementary Staff appreciate what she does for all of us."

Nydia Alvarez-Alonzo is truly the embodiment of what a teacher and citizen should be. Mrs. Alonzo genuinely cares about the students she educates. In addition to covering the district's curriculum, she exposes students to gardening, community Citrus Fiesta, NASA Bernard Harris Summer Science camp among many others. She keeps track of her students as they transition to Jr. High and High School. Attending high school graduations is an annual ritual because she wants to be a part of every important step in her students' lives. It's just another way to show her support. Mrs. Alonzo never misses a school board meeting (including committee meetings). Colleagues look to her with questions regarding district issues because they know she stays informed. She also attends board meetings from surrounding districts. This amazing individual has helped the great city of Mission, Texas for the past 15 years by helping in its annual 'Trash Bash'. Mrs. Alonzo along with her group of 5th graders pick up trash on a designated weekend in their efforts to beautify the community. As an educational leader, she serves as the President of the Mission chapter of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association (TCTA). She is is also the TCTA District I Director at the state level. Mrs. Alonzo meets with as many local and state government officials to ensure they're aware of what is going on in the field of education. She organizes educators from across the Rio Grande Valley and has taken a delegation to the State Capitol for the past 4 legislative sessions to advocate for students and teachers. She looks for grant opportunities for educators to sharpen their skills during the summer. This allows for her students to reap the benefits of the latest in education. I can say so much more about this phenomenal educator who does all these wonderful things while balancing family time with her two sons and husband.

Only great and positive comments for Mrs. Alonzo she is such a great person to work with. Always looking for the students benefits and ways of helping during and after school. I work with her after school and while the bus students wait for the bus to come for the second route she takes the student to a computer lab and asks them to work 2 days reading and 2 days math. This and many other great things she does for students. As for her colleagues always providing support and information about rights and changes in the district.

Mrs.Alonzo is a very loving and caring person. she helped my daughter out a lot last year. she helped her with confidence and self esteem that had bern lowered cause of students. she taught my daughter so much in class that she would come home and talk all about it. during our meetings she was always very welcoming and ready to teach us a little something. she is a great role model for her students cause she loves helping out in her community as well not like many teachers she leads by example and I love hoe my daughter gets so excited to see her every time we run in to her at other school activities overall she's an over achiever thanks Mrs Alonzo.

I really hope she wins I think she deserves it she is a great teacher and human being over all. Not only did she teach my son a lot of valuable lessons but she supports my son outside of school by attending his boxing matches. I really want to thank her for all she does for the kids at marcell her love and support show as she walks through the hallways. She is so nice and gives the kids great advice and motivates them to always be better. If one thing is for sure is that she will always be in our hearts and we wish her the best of luck in life and blessings for her and her family.
