Sherri Morris was nominated by a colleague who wishes to remain anonymous.

Mrs. Morris has been teaching students with moderate intellectual disabilities for over 30 years.  She is a staunch advocate for her students and provides each child with skills that will enable them to navigate a world that doesn't always understand or consider the needs of citizens with disabilities.

She teaches life skills such as:

  • how to dress for different seasons or day-to-day weather
  • recognizing the environmental footprint in the community
  • how to use communication devices, and;
  • how to plant and grow vegetables.

The school garden is one example of how Mrs. Morris combines teaching and life skills into a lesson plan for her students.

"When I think about a teacher who has a proven ability to make a difference in the lives of students, I think of Sherri Morris," the nominator said.

Mrs. Morris serves as a leader in her school and within the special education team by monitoring the individual education plans for each of her school's special needs students. She has served on numerous district and state level committees tasked with making a positive impact on her school's special needs population. Her record of care, compassion, and exceptional instruction are widely known in her school district, and she is frequently called upon to train new staff and student teachers. She is committed to producing a nurturing atmosphere with high expectations that allows her students to participate in everyday activities alongside their general education peers.

"I cannot imagine a more deserving educator for the honor of being chosen as LifeChanger of the Year, than Sherri Morris.  She truly changes the lives of students who need a LifeChanger in their corner," the nominator said.

You won't find a more giving person! She has a heart of gold and a true passion for her students family and friends . She is an inspiration and my mentor . I could've have been more blessed for Sherri to have been introduced to me my senior year of college as her student teacher!

She has to be the most dedicated person I know in her profession.. The way she talks of her special needs children, you can see the love in her face that she loves and cares for everyone in her class. For years and years she has shown this same spirit to the numbers of children she has taught. Even though I am not there at her school, I know for sure she gives more than a 100% to helping her students.
