Music that Describes Xochitl

Xochitl Garcia was nominated by Dempster Cherry.

A teacher's influence can be measured in many ways: what students learn, the confidence they gain, and, most meaningfully, whether they still want their teacher beside them when they reach an important milestone long after leaving the classroom. Mrs. Garcia has demonstrated all three throughout her teaching career. She does far more than teach Spanish. She creates an environment where students feel valued, develop confidence, and learn to believe in their own potential.

Mrs. Garcia ensures every student feels safe, respected, supported, and heard. She understands firsthand the vulnerability of learning another language, having moved to the United States in eighth grade without knowing English. She intentionally creates a classroom where students never feel embarrassed for trying. She sets a firm expectation that students will not ridicule or criticize classmates practicing Spanish and maintains a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and disrespect. Her students learn that mistakes are not failures. They are part of learning and growth.

Mrs. Garcia also recognizes that students learn in different ways. Through projects, collaboration, creative activities, and cultural exploration, she gives students multiple opportunities to show what they know while making learning engaging and meaningful. Her lessons go beyond vocabulary and grammar, helping students explore Spanish-speaking cultures, traditions, customs, and perspectives. She encourages students to recognize the value of bilingualism and keep developing their language skills throughout high school and college, connecting what they learn today to future educational and career opportunities.

Her commitment to her students extends well beyond the classroom. Mrs. Garcia makes a deliberate effort to know her students as individuals, listen to them, encourage them, and attend their extracurricular activities and sporting events whenever possible. Students and families frequently tell her that she is their favorite teacher, that their children love her class, or that their child feels she genuinely cares about their success. Those comments reflect the nurturing atmosphere she works every day to create.

Mrs. Garcia also demonstrates leadership beyond her own classroom. She serves on the District Office's Dual Language Immersion Task Force and Rivera Middle School's Culture and Climate Committee. She has served as the Spanish Club Advisor at Cruickshank Middle School. Her professional excellence is reflected in consistently positive evaluations, with most categories rated "Exceeds Standards." She holds a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Master's degrees in Humanities and Forensic Psychology, and a CLAD certification. She actively seeks feedback, reflects on her teaching, and continually works to improve her effectiveness. She conducts herself with professionalism, integrity, and respect toward students, families, colleagues, and administrators.

Perhaps the clearest evidence of Mrs. Garcia's impact came this past summer. Former students whom she had taught in high school specifically asked her to attend their graduation. When they saw her at the ceremony, at least ten were emotional, called out her name, ran to her, hugged her, and told her how much they had missed her. They wanted their former teacher there to share one of the most important milestones of their lives. That moment captures what makes Mrs. Garcia a LifeChanger. Her influence does not end when the school year ends, when students move to another grade, or even when they graduate from her class. She teaches her students that success is about more than academics—that kindness, respect, responsibility, perseverance, integrity, and thoughtful choices matter just as much. Most importantly, she leaves her students believing that they are capable, that their voice matters, and that someone believes in their potential. Mrs. Garcia doesn't simply teach a language; she builds confidence, nurtures character, and creates relationships that can last a lifetime.
