Dr. Justin Jones was nominated by his family member, Alaina Fingal.
Dr. Jones is a LifeChanger because he sees potential in students that others may overlook and then creates opportunities for that potential to grow. Throughout his career as an educator and school leader, Dr. Jones has focused on developing people and building systems that help them succeed. At R.F. Bumpus Middle School, that philosophy shows up in his work with students, teachers, and families, especially through Leadership Bumpus, a student leadership initiative he created to recognize and develop student influence.
Dr. Jones believes leadership isn't limited to students with the highest grades, perfect behavior, or traditional leadership titles. Some of the most influential students in a school may never see themselves as leaders because no one has recognized that ability in them. Leadership Bumpus intentionally identifies students who can influence their peers and gives them opportunities to develop that influence through leadership experiences, service, reflection, and interaction with community leaders. His goal is not simply to create better students, but to help young people recognize that they have the ability and responsibility to positively affect the people around them.
That same philosophy shapes his work with students with exceptionalities. Dr. Jones advocates for meaningful, sustainable inclusion by creating systems that appropriately support students while also considering the educators, families, caregivers, and others responsible for sustaining those supports. His research examines transition preparation beginning in middle school and continuing through high school into postsecondary life. He has carried that work beyond his own school by presenting his research nationally through the Council for Exceptional Children.
Dr. Jones is a LifeChanger because his impact isn't tied to one program, one position, or one group of students. Whether he is developing student leaders, improving instructional practices, strengthening support systems, helping students transition to their next stage of life, or challenging educators to rethink how schools identify potential, his work reflects the same belief: we should not wait for people to struggle before we support them, and we should not wait for people to prove themselves before we invest in their potential. For Dr. Jones, middle school is not a waiting room. It is a critical period when young people discover who they are, how they influence others, and what they can become. He has dedicated his career to making sure students have people and systems around them that help them answer those questions with confidence. That is why Dr. Jones is a LifeChanger.
