Rafael Barrientos was nominated by Lisa Jeter, a member of the community.

Officer Barrientos is the school resource officer at Dr. Charles R. Drew K-8 Center, an arts magnet school in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. His own department named him Officer of the Month for its Northeast District in January 2026. What he does in his building goes well past his job description.

Officer Barrientos is with students every day, and he treats each interaction as a chance to teach rather than to enforce. He engages with students, encourages them, and gives them teachable moments. For many of these students, he is the first police officer they will ever know by name, and he is quietly shaping what they will believe about people in uniform for the rest of their lives.

Students call him 'Officer B,' and the school uses that name publicly in its captions. In a K-8 building, that is what earned trust actually looks like. 

On Law Enforcement Appreciation Day in January 2026, the school posted a photograph of him surrounded by students holding a banner the children had painted themselves, reading "THANK YOU OFFICER B - WE LOVE YOU." The school wrote publicly, in its own words: "We are so grateful to have you as a part of our RAM Family! With you, we always feel safe, protected, and seen."

"'Safe, protected, and seen,' is the school's assessment of him, not mine. I am a member of the community. I am not a colleague, a district employee, or a parent at the school. I am nominating him because this kind of work usually goes unrecognized outside the building where it happens, and it should not," said Jeter.
