Julie Gwinn was nominated by the parent of a student, Ahnna Coate.

Ms. Gwinn exemplifies what an outstanding educator should be—not only through her professional performance, but through the genuine care, compassion, creativity, and commitment she shows her students every day. She has a remarkable ability to see students as individuals and determine what they need to be successful. She challenges her students to apply themselves and to be consistent in their effort, even when the work is difficult. At the same time, she makes sure they know that struggling is part of learning and that she is there to help them work through it.

"Our family experienced this firsthand when our daughter experienced a prolonged illness and missed a significant amount of school. Julie went above and beyond, working individually with our family on several occasions to help our daughter catch up. She gave her additional time and support while making sure she felt encouraged, not overwhelmed, by everything she had missed. Her willingness to invest that extra time made a meaningful difference for our daughter," said Coate.

Ms. Gwinn creates a classroom environment where students feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. Her students genuinely enjoy being around her and feel connected to her as a person. They see her as compassionate, approachable, and fun. She also understands that children cannot always separate what is happening emotionally in their lives from what is happening academically. She regularly talks with her students about the social and emotional challenges they are experiencing and gives them practical tools to work through them. She creates an atmosphere where students feel safe expressing themselves and know that their teacher cares about more than just their academic performance. 

Ms. Gwinn knows that sometimes creating a positive classroom means simply having fun. She is the kind of teacher who will even do a cartwheel in class. Those moments may seem small, but they help create the joy, connection, and sense of community that students remember.

She demonstrates leadership through the example she sets in her classroom. She is thoughtful and intentional in her approach to teaching and willing to adapt when something isn't working. If she recognizes that her students aren't understanding a concept, she doesn't simply continue with the same approach. She stops, reassesses, and finds another way to reach them. She may slow down and read something aloud, change how she presents information, or create an entirely new approach to help her students understand. This willingness to pivot and find what works demonstrates the kind of leadership and dedication that benefits not only individual students, but the learning environment as a whole.

One of her greatest strengths is the nurturing environment she creates. Her students know that she cares about them. They feel seen, supported, and valued, while also being encouraged to challenge themselves and do their best. Ms. Gwinn strikes an important balance between high expectations and compassion. She doesn't let students give up just because something is difficult, but she also doesn't make them feel inadequate for struggling. Instead, she helps them see that they can grow and gives them the support they need to get there.
