Elvira Qandah was nominated anonymously.

Every child who walks through Ms. Qandah's classroom door deserves to feel safe, valued, and capable of success. As a first-grade teacher in a low-income school district, she knows school is often where students receive not only academic instruction, but consistency, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. She creates a positive classroom environment by building strong relationships with every student and celebrating both academic and personal growth. She begins each day with a morning meeting where students greet one another, share their thoughts, and practice kindness, empathy, and teamwork. She intentionally fosters a classroom culture where mistakes are viewed as opportunities to learn, questions are welcomed, and every child's voice matters. She also recognizes that each student brings unique experiences and challenges, so she meets them with patience, compassion, and high expectations.

Through hands-on learning, positive reinforcement, and engaging activities, she helps students develop confidence in themselves as learners. Her goal is for every child to leave first grade believing they are capable, important, and excited about learning. Ms. Qandah's students are eager, curious, and full of potential, but many come to school without access to the resources that support learning at home. Because the school serves a low-income community, her classroom often relies on donated or personally purchased supplies to ensure every child has what they need to succeed.
