Ms. Reeves loves her job, and that is the absolute first step. If a teacher is burnt out or doesn't love what they do, it definitely shows, and the students know! So, she is always happy when students are around — even if she's tired or having a rough day, the students never know.

She tries to compliment every student on something every day, to give them positive praise. It doesn't always have to be in the room; it could be in the hallway or in the cafeteria. For example, she'll say: "I love the way you opened the door for Mrs. Smith." "I love the color of your shirt." "Your boots are really cool, do you think they come in my size?" "You did such a wonderful job lining up today." "Thank you so much for helping Jenny with that trash." "Wow, your handwriting is so impressive today, I love the effort you put into it."

Ms. Reeves feels that if kids are noticed, appreciated, and respected, then it is easier for them to do the same in return. Because of that, she tends to have strong relationships with students. She starts building trust on day one, even with the few students who have more challenging behaviors.

Ms. Reeves sets clear expectations in the classroom and sets boundaries early. Each day is different, and sometimes the class has to adapt to a situation and be more flexible to accommodate individuals' needs.

Ms. Reeves also provides a treasure chest or piece of candy on the last day of the week. To receive that, the student has to be well-behaved each day in the classroom without any major concerns. If students don't earn a reward, they discuss that day why they didn't earn it and what they can do differently to move on. Ms. Reeves assures that students fix those behaviors moving forward because they love the reward system! Students look forward to it at the end of the week.
