Dr. Giani Clarkson was nominated anonymously. 

Creating a positive classroom environment begins with creating a space where students feel safe enough to take academic risks. Dr. Clarkson constantly reminds students, "Take a chance and take a chance on yourself." Those words have become more than a classroom slogan. They are the foundation of the classroom culture. He wants every student to know that mistakes are not failures. They are evidence that learning is taking place. He recognizes that many students today are hesitant to speak up in class. Between the pressures of social media, fear of embarrassment, and a lack of confidence, participating in classroom discussions can feel like climbing a mountain. Because he teaches social studies, where discussion, debate, and critical thinking are essential, he intentionally creates an environment that encourages every student to find their voice. He removes cell phones to eliminate distractions, establishes classroom norms centered on respect and encouragement, and celebrates students who are willing to try, even when they are unsure of the answer. His students learn that courage is valued just as much as correctness. 

The physical environment of Dr. Clarkson's classroom reinforces these beliefs. Rather than a traditional classroom, he designed the space to resemble a college dorm room. Comfortable chairs, bean bags, and collaborative spaces help students feel welcomed and relaxed. One of the most meaningful features is the "Dream Wall," where every student proudly displays the name of the college or university they hope to attend. For many of his students, who will be the first in their families to attend college, seeing those dreams displayed every day transforms college from a distant possibility into a tangible goal. Ultimately, he wants his classroom to be more than a place where students learn history or government. He wants it to be a place where they discover confidence, build community, and begin to believe that their dreams are achievable. When students feel safe, supported, and inspired, they are willing to take chances on themselves, and that is where meaningful learning truly begins.

Each year, Mr. Clarkson works with seniors applying to colleges, scholarships, leadership programs, and internships that request professional photographs. His goal is to improve access, confidence, and opportunity.
