Eleonora Gegaj was nominated by Turan Balik.
Ms. Gegaj is a LifeChanger in every sense of the word. For five years, she taught fourth-grade Math, Science, and STEM at Bronx Arts and Science Charter School. In that time, she was nominated as the school's Teacher of the Year four times and was officially named Teacher of the Year during the 2024–2025 school year. During the 2025-26 school year, she also received the Phil Patire Award, which recognizes one outstanding teacher from among all iLearn elementary schools. She is now beginning her sixth year in her new role as Assistant Director of Operations. What makes her extraordinary is not a single achievement, but the daily, consistent way she changes the trajectory of the children in her care.
A proven ability to make a beneficial difference in students' lives: Ms. Gegaj's impact is measurable. This year, two of her English-language learners entered her class performing on a 1st- and 2nd-grade math level. Through differentiated instruction, bilingual anchor charts, manipulatives, math centers, and daily one-on-one support, she moved both students to grade level within the year. On the i-Ready diagnostic they grew 30% and 47% in just three months; one rose from a 72 to a 92 on quarterly assessments, and the other earned a 95 on a comprehensive skills assessment and a perfect 100 on word problems.
Just as important, these once-struggling students now confidently present their work at the document camera and help their classmates. Creating a positive school atmosphere: Ms. Gegaj builds a student-centered classroom where every child has a job, takes ownership of learning, and is encouraged to lead discussions. Her collaborative math centers and peer-feedback activities teach students to support and learn from one another, fostering an inclusive, respectful community that extends well beyond her room.
Ms. Gegaj serves as Coordinator of the iLearn after-school academy, aligning tutoring directly with grade-level standards, supervising and supporting tutors, and keeping families informed. She has led grade-level chair meetings, organized field trips and events, mentored new teachers, and served on the Sunshine Club committee. She generously shares her lesson plans, slides, and worksheets with colleagues and has stepped in to teach math skills for peers less confident in the content.
Ms. Gegaj holds a Master of Science in Education from Hunter College and New York State certification (grades 1-6), and continuously pursues professional development in spiral review, differentiation, fractions, science sensemaking, and family engagement. She has been recognized with a City Council Citation for Outstanding Citizenship.
Beyond academics, Ms. Gegaj knows her students and families personally, even conducting home visits, and gives her Saturdays and summers to the iRise state-test prep program to close learning gaps.
Ms. Gegaj is dependable and dedicated, rarely absent, always prepared, and deeply trusted. In four years she has never received a single parent complaint, and she treats every colleague, parent, and child with kindness and respect. Ms. Gegaj embodies each of these criteria not occasionally but every single day. She makes rigorous subjects joyful, makes every child feel valued and capable, and lifts up everyone around her. I have worked alongside Mrs.Eleonora Gegaj for nearly five years. She is a passionate professional who has made such an impact in the lives of her students. Oftentimes parents have personally requested Mrs.Gegaj to be their child’s teacher. She has taught Math, Science and Stem to her students. The past two years she has taken the opportunity to teach her class the life cycle of a baby chick. The students witnessed the process of watching an egg mature in an incubator and watch the chick hatch. Her students helped cared for the baby chick until it was ready to be taken to a local farm to be cared for. This past school year Mrs.Gegaj won 2 prestigious awards in our iLEARN organization. She won Teacher of the Year Award and the Phi Patire Award for all of iLEARN schools. She is kind, loving and compassionate with all of her students. Mrs. Gegaj recently was promoted to Assistant Director of Operations. She continues to be an asset to our organization and our school community. Eleonora Gegaj is an amazing teacher and teaches her students how to work with critical thinking and has a lot of passion for education, her amazing work lead her to become teacher of the year in her school and for all elementary schools in Ilearn, she always gives a good example and cares for her students. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Eleonora, and I can truly say that her dedication to her students is exceptional.
