Music that Describes Mr. Lee (Kip)

Lee (Kip) Montgomery was nominated by his assistant principal, Dr. Tricia Travis.

Mr. Montgomery is an authentic, strategic, and impactful principal. Each of the three words that best describe him as a LifeChanger reflects how he leads with genuine relationships, intentional decision-making, and a clear positive effect on students and staff.

"For years, I admired his high-performing school from a distance, dreaming of working under an administrator who could lead with compassion through both smooth and challenging seasons. While I didn't yet know the man behind the reputation, fate intervened: 20 years later, I was appointed his assistant principal. Both of my dreams came true. Working alongside him has changed my life both personally and professionally. I have always believed there is a way to lead with love during difficult times, and Kip models this every day. Whenever I sit with him to unpack complex decisions, he offers a perspective that helps me see beyond people's immediate circumstances and focus on their full potential. He delivers leadership as an act of service rather than an exercise of power. If we could replicate his approach around the world, students, educators, and employees everywhere would feel valued, capable, and supported enough to do their best work and live their best lives," said Travis.

Mr. Montgomery's leadership has had a profound and measurable impact on the sustained success of Whispering Oak Elementary. Through his intentional focus on building a culture of trust, collaboration, and high expectations, he has created an environment where both students and staff thrive. His leadership is reflected in the school's exceptional staff retention rate of less than 2% annually, ensuring consistent instruction and a stable, supportive learning environment for families. By prioritizing relationships and maintaining a highly visible presence on campus, Mr. Montgomery fosters open communication and a sense of belonging among staff.

His "leadership by walking around" approach keeps him connected to the daily experiences of teachers and students, enabling him to respond quickly to needs and provide meaningful support. As a result, staff feel valued, empowered, and motivated to perform at high levels. This strong professional culture has translated into major measurable outcomes:

  • Statewide recognition of Whispering Oak's teaching staff, ranked #19 out of 2,143 in Florida (Niche.com).
  • Ranked the #3 elementary school in Orange County (Niche.com, 2025–2026).
  • Earned a School of Excellence designation for seven consecutive years and a consistent "A" rating for the past ten years.
  • Student proficiency in both math and reading stands strong at 87%.

Mr. Montgomery's ability to balance accountability with support has cultivated a high-performing team committed to continuous improvement and student success. He leads with integrity by making fair, student-centered decisions, maintaining confidentiality, holding staff accountable, and upholding policies and ethical standards even in difficult situations. He consistently balances empathy with accountability while building trust through transparency, consistency, and professionalism.

Over the course of Mr. Montgomery's career, he has learned that the true impact of an educator is often unseen and sometimes only revealed years later. In 2025, more than two decades after he taught a quiet student. The student reached out to share that the relationships they built and Mr. Montgomery's belief in them changed the trajectory of their life. Raised by his grandmother and searching for confidence, the student found his voice in Mr. Montgomery's drama class. Through encouragement and a simple but powerful message—"If you can dream it, you can achieve it and then inspire others to do the same"—he discovered what was possible. Today, the student has become a teacher, an administrator, an author, and a motivational speaker, dedicating his life to inspiring others just as he was once inspired. Mr. Montgomery says the student's story is a powerful reminder that the work extends far beyond the classroom. It reinforces his lifelong belief: we may never fully know the mark we leave, but we must always strive to leave people better than we found them.

Beyond his campus, Mr. Montgomery actively serves and elevates the broader educational community through leadership roles and professional memberships:

  • Treasurer, Orange County Association of School Administrators (OCASA), 2018–2023;
  • Elementary School Representative, OCASA, 2024–2025;
  • Member, National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP);
  • Member, Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA)

Ultimately, his leadership has not only sustained excellence but has positioned Whispering Oak Elementary as a model school where strong relationships, instructional consistency, and a shared commitment to excellence drive results for every single student.
