Taylor Nunez was nominated by a family member, Gregory Bove.

LifeChangers are individuals whose influence extends far beyond their job description. They leave a lasting impact on students, strengthen their schools, inspire their communities, and demonstrate the character that others aspire to emulate. Ms. Nunez exemplifies all of these qualities.

For more than a decade, Ms. Nunez has served Worcester Public Schools as an English and Journalism teacher. Her commitment to students is reflected in a simple professional goal she has shared publicly: to ensure every student feels welcomed, respected, and loved. Rather than viewing education as simply the transfer of knowledge, she has built her career around helping students feel valued, heard, and capable of success.

Her impact on students became even more visible following her diagnosis with ALS last year at the age of 36. Faced with a devastating disease that would have caused many to step away from the classroom, Ms. Nunez chose to continue teaching. Students have watched their teacher continue to lead a classroom while adapting to the realities of a progressive neurological disease. In doing so, they have witnessed resilience not as a concept discussed in a lesson plan, but as something practiced daily. Through her example, students have learned that adversity does not define a person, that challenges can be met with grace, and that hope remains powerful even during life's most difficult moments.

Her influence extends well beyond her classroom. Following her diagnosis, she became a leading voice for ALS awareness throughout Massachusetts. She has advocated at the Massachusetts State House, partnered with ALS organizations, participated in awareness campaigns, and helped organize fundraising events that have brought communities together in support of ALS research and patient services. Through Walk to Defeat ALS events, local community fundraisers, public speaking engagements, media appearances, and outreach efforts, she has transformed her personal diagnosis into a platform for education, advocacy, and hope. Thousands of people who may never enter her classroom have nevertheless been impacted by her leadership.

Her leadership has strengthened the culture of her school and community alike. Students, families, and colleagues have watched her continue to teach, advocate, and serve while navigating the daily realities of ALS. Her example has fostered empathy, compassion, and resilience among those around her. School leaders have publicly recognized the profound impact she has had on both students and staff, describing her as an inspiration whose determination and positivity elevate the entire school community. By choosing visibility over privacy and service over self-focus, Ms. Nunez has helped others better understand ALS while demonstrating the power of courage and community.

Her professional excellence has also been formally recognized. In 2026, she was named Worcester Public Schools' Educator of the Year, a distinction that reflects years of exceptional teaching, dedication to students, and respect from colleagues and administrators. This honor affirmed what her students and peers already knew: She is an educator whose influence extends far beyond academic achievement.

Perhaps most remarkable is the way she has continued to serve others while balancing the many responsibilities of her own life. As a teacher, wife, and mother to an 8-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, she faces challenges that would overwhelm most people. Yet she consistently chooses to invest her time and energy into helping students, supporting other ALS families, and advocating for a cause larger than herself. After receiving a terminal diagnosis, she could understandably have focused solely on herself and her family. Instead, she chose to use her experience to educate others, advocate for research and awareness, support fellow ALS families, and create hope for people facing similar circumstances. These actions reveal the qualities that define true character: integrity, selflessness, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to others. Ms. Nunez lives these values in her personal life as well.

"I know Taylor as a mother, daughter, wife, and cousin. Even at family gatherings, Taylor has a unique ability to put others at ease and bring people together. At a recent family gathering, many of us were seeing Taylor navigate life with a cane for the first time. Rather than allowing discomfort or sympathy to define the moment, she immediately broke the tension with her candor and wit. Responding to the attention at the door, Taylor joked, 'Let me get settled; I'm not going anywhere fast!' The room instantly relaxed and laughed with her. Taylor spent the evening asking others about their children, celebrating milestones, and making sure everyone felt included. Taylor leads through authenticity, humor, friendliness, and genuine care for others," said Bove.

Beyond leading with her values, Ms. Nunez is a "yes-and" person who listens deeply, relates to others, and elevates every conversation. She models empathy, love, and devotion to all her family, but especially her children. Even when circumstances would justify focusing inward, her instinct is to connect with others, encourage them, and make them feel seen. Her vulnerability often leaves those around her feeling grounded, understood, and open-hearted in return.

"Our family is lucky to have Taylor," said Bove. "The LifeChanger of the Year Award recognizes individuals who make a meaningful difference in students' lives while elevating the communities they serve. Taylor Nunez has done exactly that. Through her teaching, advocacy, leadership, and extraordinary resilience, she has changed lives both inside and outside the classroom. Her students have gained a role model, her school has gained an inspiration, and the broader community has gained a powerful advocate. She is not simply deserving of the LifeChanger of the Year Award—she embodies its purpose. I can think of no individual more deserving of this recognition than Taylor Nunez."
