Music that Describes Michael

Michael Staker was nominated by his spouse, Toni Mullins-Staker.

"Mr. Staker is the principal of Horizons Academy, an alternative school dedicated to meeting the needs of diverse and at-risk learners. He consistently demonstrates a proven ability to make a meaningful and beneficial difference in the lives of students," said Mrs. Mullins-Staker.

Through individualized instruction, restorative practices, and a deep commitment to student growth, Mr. Staker has helped students overcome academic and personal obstacles, leading to increased graduation rates, improved attendance, and renewed confidence among learners who previously struggled in traditional settings. For example, he advocated for a student to return to her regular high school after completing her time at Horizons. She returned to the high school motivated to graduate, and she did it! Without Mr. Staker's intervention, this student may not have had the opportunity to graduate with her original class.

Mr. Staker plays a vital role in fostering a positive and inclusive school atmosphere. By promoting respect, empathy, and collaboration, he ensures that Horizons Academy remains a safe and welcoming environment where every student and staff member feels valued. His emphasis on relationship-building among staff and students fosters a culture of trust and mutual support, which is essential to an alternative education setting. This past Teacher Appreciation Week, Mr. Staker used his own funds to ensure that all staff members received a daily treat and a staff shirt. This created unity among teachers who were burned out at the end of the school year!

Demonstrating strong leadership both within the school and across the district, Mr. Staker actively collaborates with colleagues, mentors teachers, and participates in initiatives to improve alternative education practices. His leadership extends beyond daily operations by influencing policy, supporting professional development, and advocating for students who require nontraditional pathways to success. One time, he drove a sick colleague home from school because she was too sick to drive herself.

Mr. Staker maintains an excellent record of performance at the professional level, consistently meeting or exceeding district expectations. His ability to implement innovative programs, analyze data to drive instruction, and support staff development reflects a commitment to continuous improvement and educational excellence. One example of this is that Horizons Academy recently won the Penda Science Smackdown Championship belt, a symbol of hard work and dedication.

A nurturing atmosphere is at the core of Horizons Academy's mission, and Mr. Staker's dedication to creating such an environment is evident in every aspect of the school. Staff are encouraged and supported, students are treated with dignity and care, and social-emotional learning is prioritized alongside academic achievement. Finally, Mr. Staker adheres to the highest moral and ethical standards, modeling integrity, fairness, and professionalism in all interactions. He doesn't ask his staff to do anything he isn't already doing. He is always in the hallways at bell exchange and in the cafeteria for every lunch. His leadership is grounded in a strong ethical framework, ensuring that all decisions are made in the best interests of students and the school community.
