Ms. McDowell has consistently demonstrated a proven ability to make a meaningful, beneficial difference in students' lives throughout her career in education. After dedicating 35 years to District of Columbia Public Schools, she returned from retirement to continue serving students as a Special Education Teacher with Charles County Public Schools. She currently works closely with autistic students and students with significant special needs, providing individualized instruction, structure, patience, and compassion to help them grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Her students have shown measurable academic growth, including increases in i-Ready performance, while also gaining confidence, communication skills, and independence under her guidance.
Ms. McDowell works tirelessly to ensure all students, regardless of ability, feel valued, capable, and successful. She positively contributes to her school's atmosphere each day through her warm personality, uplifting spirit, and willingness to support others. Students, families, and staff members know her as someone who is always approachable, compassionate, and dependable. She helps create a welcoming and nurturing environment where collaboration, kindness, and respect are consistently modeled.
Ms. McDowell's leadership extends beyond the classroom through her support of schoolwide initiatives, mentoring of peers, and active involvement in programs that benefit students and staff. She willingly assists colleagues, supports parents, contributes to the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) store, and provides holiday gifts and resources for students in need. Her actions demonstrate servant leadership and a genuine commitment to her school community.
Throughout her career, Ms. McDowell has maintained a record of excellence and professionalism. Her dedication to special education, particularly her work with autistic students, instructional effectiveness, and student-centered practices, has earned the admiration and respect of colleagues, administrators, parents, and students alike. Even after retirement, her passion for education inspired her to continue serving children in a Title I school setting where her impact is greatly needed. She is deeply committed to fostering a nurturing atmosphere where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to learn. She builds meaningful relationships with students and families and consistently advocates for the academic and emotional well-being of every child she serves.
