I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Rodriguez at Kenwood K-8 Center for 8 years. He led our school with heart and dedication every day and in every way. His tireless efforts and unwavering support for students and staff were felt and seen daily.
He instilled a sense of pride and of family culture that bound our school together. His legacy is felt even after he left the halls of Kenwood.
I can still hear the responses of the students, parents, and staff when he would speak at assemblies. His words “Once a Cougar” were always followed by a resounding, heart thumping, sense of pride, from all the spectators “always a Cougar”!
I will always remember the way he made us feel heard, seen, and appreciated. With exciting and warm “Welcome Back to School” meetings that were positive and encouraging, to teacher appreciation BBQs with him behind the grill to serve us, to the “End of Year” celebrations thanking and uplifting his staff and students for jobs well done.

Mr Rodriguez also finds way to connect with his staff because he believes they are an important component to provide the best for his students and community. He holds them to the same high standards he holds himself. Together him and his teams have successfully impacted numerous lives. This evident by the amount of past staff, teachers and students that find the time to reconnect with him fron time to time throughout the years.
He leads by example and his focus goes beyond his Administration, Staff, Teachers and Students. He carries that passionate into the community. Whether getting involved in smaller community events or simply trying to welcome new families and community members / partners into the Knight Family. I’m 20 now, but when I think about the people who really shaped who I am, Mr. Rudy Rodriguez is always at the top of that list. I met him when I was just a kid in 3rd grade, and at the time he was just “the principal” — the guy who stood at the front of assemblies and walked the halls. I had no idea he would end up being such a life changer for me by the time I graduated 8th grade.
What made him different was that he actually saw us. Not just as students, but as people. Even when I was younger and probably didn’t stand out in any big way, he knew my name, checked in on me, and made me feel like I mattered. That kind of attention sticks with you, especially as a kid. It made school feel like a place where I belonged, not just somewhere I had to be.
As I got older, his impact became even clearer. Middle school is a weird time — you’re figuring yourself out, making mistakes, sometimes doubting everything. There were moments when I could’ve easily gone in the wrong direction or just stopped caring. But he had this way of holding you accountable without tearing you down. If you messed up, he’d call you out, but he’d also remind you that you were capable of better. And somehow, you believed him.
He didn’t just talk about success like it was some far-off thing. He made it feel real and reachable. Whether it was encouraging us to take school seriously, get involved, or just believe we could do more than we thought, he planted that mindset early. Looking back now, I realize how much that influenced the way I approach things today — college, work, even just life in general.
By the time I graduated 8th grade, I wasn’t the same kid I was in 3rd. And a big part of that growth came from having someone like Mr. Rodriguez in my corner for all those years. He set a standard, not just academically, but personally — respect, integrity, faith — and those are things that stuck.
It’s easy to underestimate how much one person in a school can impact a student, but he proved that it can be everything. Even now, years later, I still carry a lot of what he taught me. That’s why I can honestly say he wasn’t just a principal — he was a life changer.
From the very first day I met Mr. Rodriguez, I felt that I had a supportive and caring principal behind me. After a year and a half of working with him, I can confidently say that feeling has only grown stronger. He is, without a doubt, the most caring and supportive leader I have ever had the privilege of working with. We truly consider ourselves blessed to have such an outstanding principal leading our school community.
In such a short time, Mr. Rodriguez has already changed the lives of so many within our school, including those in our schools baseball program. Very few student-athletes can say they receive the level of support from their principal that our players receive here at Miami Sunset Senior High School. He attends every game, knows parents by name, and even sits in the dugout to encourage and support the players. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that our athletes have the best possible environment and opportunities to pursue their dreams and achieve their goals.
Mr. Rodriguez has inspired me to become better in every aspect of my life. In the 15 years I’ve coached and worked in education, I have never encountered a principal with such genuine care and unwavering dedication to the success of his student-athletes, both on and off the field.
His example has reminded me that the greatest impact we can make in life often comes through the small, intentional ways we show up for others each day. This is something Mr. Rodriguez does with genuine care, humility, and consistency. His leadership has not only elevated our program, but has also inspired all of us around him to become better people, better mentors, and better leaders ourselves.

Mr. Rdriguez truly changes lives every day. As principal of Kenwood K-8 Center, he made every student feel seen, valued, and important. My youngest son even called him his “best friend” since Kindergarten, which says so much about the special connection he creates with students. His dedication, leadership, and heart have made a lasting impact on our families and school community, and there is no doubt that Kenwood was better because of him.
When Mr. Rodriguez was principal at my school he always made sure that the people that work with him felt supported, especially during a family crises. It meant a great deal to know that you could count on him if you were going through a difficult family situation.
