Joel Scott was nominated by a teacher, Melissa Lozano.
Mr. Scott is very dedicated to his students and encourages them to succeed. He is a dynamic and passionate third-grade educator who brings energy, purpose, and heart into everything he does. His education journey began in Houston, Texas, where he earned his teaching certification through the CTED program at the University of Houston. He spent three impactful years teaching second-grade in Alief ISD, growing into a strong, student-centered educator through mentorship, hands-on experience, and an unwavering commitment to his community.
However, for Mr. Scott, teaching has never stopped at the classroom door. While in Houston, he launched a boys' club designed to empower young boys to become confident leaders, build strong character, and grow into respectful young gentlemen. What started as a small initiative quickly became a meaningful movement.
After relocating to San Antonio, Mr. Scott joined the School of Science and Technology as a 3rd-grade teacher, where he continues to bring his passion and innovative teaching style to a new community. At the same time, he expanded his vision beyond the classroom by reimagining his boys' club into a nonprofit organization, Leaders and Gents. Through this work, he has created opportunities for young men to be mentored, inspired, and exposed to new possibilities. Mr. Scott's efforts have led to partnerships with organizations in the San Antonio community, such as the San Antonio Spurs, San Antonio FC, SeaWorld, and Six Flags, as well as collaborations with community leaders who pour into his students through mentorship and real-world guidance.
Known for his vibrant, engaging teaching style, Mr. Scott creates a classroom environment where students feel seen, heard, and motivated to succeed. He goes above and beyond to build meaningful relationships with his own students, across grade levels, and throughout the entire school community. He actively partners with parents and colleagues to ensure every child is supported, valued, and positioned for growth. By cultivating a strong culture of connection and collaboration, Mr. Scott creates an environment where students, families, and staff work together toward shared success.

I had the pleasure of seeing both sides of Mr. Scott. He is a coworker of mine, and also the teacher of my son's club, Leaders and Gents. He is such an amazing teacher. He pours into his students, all he can. He is strict, but fair; structured, but always positive. He guides them by not only giving direction, but by leading them. He is an active participant in our SST community and completely engaged with his students. We are grateful he is an SST Hawk!!
Our daughter Charlotte, has had an awesome year with Mr. Scott. She has grown so much this year and loved school because of him. He made learning fun and exciting. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Mr. Scott at SST this past year while serving as a long-term substitute. From the way he runs his classroom to the positive interactions he has throughout the school, he has genuinely been a bright light on campus and an outstanding role model for students. I have known Joel Scott since the summer of 2022, when he began the CTED Summer Institute Program. I still remember that he arrived very early on the first day, and during our conversation, he shared his desire to work with students and help guide them toward future success.
Throughout the program, Joel consistently demonstrated dedication, perseverance, and a genuine passion for education and serving others. He was always respectful when discussing situations that were different from his own perspective and often asked sincere questions to better understand the thoughts and experiences of others.

I was so happy when I heard there was going to be a leaders and gents club for my son to join. This was my son’s first year at SST and it was such a great experience for him especially because he got to join the club lead by Mr. Scott. Mr. Joel Scott is an alumni of the CTED program, and an example of what it looks like to pursue education with passion, commit to ongoing learning, and relentlessly chase and achieve dreams. Mr. Scott is an exceptional teacher and leader. While he is not my son’s primary 5th grade teacher, he leads the Leaders and Gents Club, which my son is a member of.
