Music that Describes Rebecca

Rebecca Gomez was nominated by a volunteer, Linda Riojas.

"I am nominating Ms. Gomez because she is a person who always goes above and beyond for all the children and parents who attend Ojeda Middle School. There have been numerous times when I have seen Ms. Gomez learn of a need for a student and/or their family. If she doesn't have that item, like a pair of new shoes, food, or other assistance that the family needs, she will help, even if she needs to pay for something out of her own pocket," said Riojas.

Ms. Gomez has ensured donations are collected so that groceries can be delivered to families to help them get through the week. She started with 10 deliveries. Then it increased to 17 deliveries, and now she can help 21 families weekly. Ms. Gomez has also been able to secure a donation of a washer and dryer for families who may not have access to one, so they can wash their students' clothes, or even their own, free of charge.

Ms. Gomez has a huge heart, but she's also a go-getter. She is always thinking about how she can play a role in continuing to make school better for students, whether it's as small as decorating the foyer to welcome guests or as big as making sure her room is a sanctuary where students can take a moment to breathe. Ms. Gomez has also made her room available to host adult GED or ESL classes for parents looking to improve their situation. She tries to keep her ear to the ground to see if there are any job openings for parents seeking employment.

"Ms. Gomez even has room to take on volunteers and is always welcoming. I know this because I started volunteering with her in 2018, when my student started her 8th-grade year, and I have never left her side. Eight years later, I am still there, and I am in awe of all she has accomplished," said Riojas. "Ms. Gomez is also the person who takes charge and is always volunteering to take on any task, no matter how challenging it may be. She never takes the easy way and always makes sure things are done perfectly, which I call the 'Rebecca stamp of approval.' These are just some small things that I have been blessed to witness of the greatness that is Ms. Gomez. She is amazing and the reason I am nominating her for LifeChanger of the Year."

Rebecca Gomez exemplifies what it means to be a true life changer. Having known her across so many chapters—first as a parent watching her care for my own child when they were a student at Ojeda, then through the eyes of a board member, a fellow community member, and a friend—I have seen firsthand the incredible depth of her impact. She carries herself with remarkable strength, confidence, and compassion, inspiring everyone around her through her absolute dedication to serving others. What makes Rebecca so exceptional is that her support goes far beyond meeting immediate needs. Whether someone is inside our district or reaching out from beyond it, Rebecca ensures that every single person she helps is treated with the utmost dignity, respect, and care. She doesn’t just cover the basic essentials; she actively invests in people, always looking ahead to ensure their future can be bright. At the core of everything Rebecca does is relationship building. She has an unmatched ability to light up any room she enters with her radiant smile, effortlessly making deep, meaningful connections wherever she goes. She is constantly seeking innovative, heartfelt ways to support and empower families, and her passion for our community is evident in every single interaction. I am profoundly honored to know her, to have worked alongside her, and to call her both an inspiration and a friend.

Rebecca has served as a Community Liaison with Whole Communities-Whole Health (WCWH) at UT Austin for the past 6 years. I have come to know her well and am in awe of her tireless energy and passion for serving her community. She is a staunch advocate for families and ensures their perspective is considered at WCWH events. Not only that, but she opened her doors to WCWH and has hosted us for community classes, as well as our first two Community Resource Days at Ojeda. The Community Resource Day is a large event with workshops, a resource fair, performances and more. Rebecca went above and beyond to host us, and we are so grateful to her. Rebecca knows how to make others feel welcome and never stops working to connect her school with any kind of resources that will support students and families. I am thrilled to see that she was nominated as a LifeChanger-it is well deserved!

I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Ms. Gomez for the past seven years, and during that time, I’ve seen firsthand the compassion and dedication she brings to every family she serves. She consistently pours her heart into helping those in need and treats everyone who walks through our office with kindness, respect, and understanding. Ms. Gomez goes far beyond simply connecting families with resources, she genuinely cares about the people she helps. Her passion for her work is evident in everything she does, and she is always willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed. She takes the time to listen to families, understand their struggles, and support them with empathy and patience. I have personally witnessed Ms. Gomez stay after hours to assist families with tasks such as searching for jobs or even providing transportation to parents who had no other way to get where they needed to go. Acts of kindness like these reflect the type of person she is selfless, compassionate, and deeply committed to her community. It is rare to find someone who not only loves their work but also serves others so wholeheartedly. Ms. Gomez does both effortlessly.

I have know Ms. Gomez thoughout the 6 years that I have worked in DVISD. She has a huge heart for the DV community - students, parents, AND teachers. Even as a veteran teacher and DV single parent, Ms. Gomez has kept me afloat when the days seemed longer than my patience. Even as I write this, it brings tears to my eyes thinking about the many times she ushered me into her office saying, "Sit, sit. You want a soda? I think I have Dr. Pepper!" She has a keen way on knowing what we all need, exactly when we need it. I have seen her go above and beyond for students and their families. In my time at Ojeda, she rallied extrordinary support for a student of a single parent when that parent was killed in a car accident. Not only did she ensure that our student's needs were met, she reached out to the surviving family to secure donations so the student's siblings were also cared for and their relatives (who found themselves with a household that doubled in size overnight) had the resources needed to move forward as they adjusted to their new blended household. These are just a couple of the stories that I could share. Ms. Gomez truly takes her position seriously in understanding that to properly nurture the child, you have to nurture the family, the home, and the community.

I work with alot of schools and Rebecca is the hardest working liaison I have seen. Anytime there is an event at the school where parents will be there, she brings in vendors that will help the students and parents. She is always there for the students and their families helping them with whatever they need. She also helps her vendors by connecting them together and supporting them. She is a great LifeChanger for all she comes in contact with.

I have know Mrs. Gomez (Tia Gomez to me since) I was in the 8th grade at Ojeda Middle School, my mother Linda volunteers and still continues to do so with her for 9 years now. She has personally helped me and countless of high school friends of mine when we were in welding and we had to compete we did not have our own helmets or tools not even a bag to carry any of it. She found it all for us to be successful in competition, She is caring and determined to find and help any youth and because of her I continued my journey as a welder and I am on my third year working and I am union since I graduated high school. I consider her as family and when she needs me to show off skills or talk to the kids I am just a phone call away. She is the person besides my parents that changed my life for the better and I thank her for being the life changer of my life not just the year.
