Music that Describes David

David Hernandez was nominated by the school principal, Keri Bartlett.

"If I had to describe Mr. Hernandez in three words, I would choose: intentional, compassionate, and unstoppable. From the moment students step onto campus each morning, Mr. Hernandez sets the tone. He greets every child with a personalized handshake—one he remembers from the year before. Even students he no longer teaches light up when they see him because they know they are still seen, still valued, and still remembered. That simple ritual communicates belonging before the school day even begins," said Bartlett.

Mr. Hernandez has a proven ability to make a measurable and meaningful difference in the lives of students. As a first-year teacher last year, his students achieved the highest growth average on the end-of-year MAP assessment of any teacher, in any content area, on campus. This level of growth is remarkable for a veteran educator, but Mr. Hernandez accomplished it in his very first year. His success is not accidental. He thoughtfully differentiates for students academically, behaviorally, and socially. He meets students exactly where they are and refuses to let them stay there.

Beyond academics, Mr. Hernandez positively shapes the school’s atmosphere in countless ways. He referees soccer games during recess so students can fully enjoy playing. He sponsors clubs simply because students ask, even when those students are not currently in his class. Mr. Hernandez rarely says “no” when it comes to supporting kids. His willingness to step up fosters connection, joy, and community across grade levels.

One story that perfectly captures Mr. Hernandez's heart happened during a PTA silent auction. He volunteered an experience where students could bid for the chance to play Fortnite with him online. A student won the auction, and Mr. Hernandez didn’t just fulfill the obligation. He went above and beyond. During snow days, while school was closed and he was off work, he set up a time to play online with the winning student and their older brother. That evening wasn’t about a video game. It was about connection, belonging, and creating a memory that the child will carry with him for years.

"Mr. Hernandez understands that relationships are the foundation for everything we do in education, and he invests in those relationships wholeheartedly," said Bartlett.

Mr. Hernandez also demonstrates strong leadership within his school. Though early in his career, he models reflective practice, high expectations, and a growth mindset for his colleagues. His results, combined with his humility and team-centered approach, inspire others to refine their craft. He is the kind of educator who elevates those around him without seeking recognition.

What truly sets Mr. Hernandez apart is his commitment to creating a nurturing environment grounded in high moral and ethical standards. Students trust him. Families respect him. Colleagues rely on him. He treats every child with dignity and believes deeply in their potential. His classroom is a place where students feel safe to take risks, grow, and be themselves.

One of the most powerful things about Mr. Hernandez is that his impact extends far beyond his roster. Former students still seek him out each morning for their handshake. Students from other grade levels ask him to sponsor the clubs they want to have. Children who need an extra adult in their corner know exactly where to go. That kind of influence cannot be mandated. It is earned through authenticity and care.

"David Hernandez is not just changing outcomes; he is changing lives. Our campus is stronger because of him, our students are more confident because of him, and our community is better because of him. He embodies every quality of a LifeChanger, and I cannot think of a more deserving educator for this recognition," said Bartlett.
