Kristen O’Connor was nominated by a family member, Matthew O'Connor.
Ms. O’Connor is an award-winning school counselor at Pequannock Township High School whose impact reaches far beyond her job description. In just her second year in counseling, she was named Educational Support Professional of the Year and recognized at the Board of Education level, a testament to the immediate and meaningful influence she has had on students, staff, and families.
Ms. O'Connor serves as an exceptionally skilled and dedicated educator by approaching counseling as both an academic and a human responsibility. She meets students where they are, whether they are high-achieving college-bound seniors, freshmen adjusting to high school, or students whose strengths point toward trade school and hands-on careers.
Ms. O'Connor has intentionally expanded post-secondary exposure by coordinating field trips and opportunities for students interested in vocational and trade pathways, reinforcing that success does not follow a single mold. By validating diverse definitions of achievement, she inspires students of all backgrounds and abilities to pursue futures that genuinely align with who they are.
Her leadership and innovation are especially evident in how she strengthened and reimagined existing student programs. As co-advisor of the Peer Leader program, Ms. O'Connor helped transform it into a true ambassador initiative. She shifted the focus from simple participation to intentional representation, accountability, and mentorship. Peer Leaders now serve as ambassadors for Pequannock Township High School, guiding campus tours, mentoring underclassmen, supporting major school events, and representing the school community with professionalism and pride.
Under that ambassador umbrella, Ms. O'Connor introduced the Big Buddy Program, pairing upperclassmen with incoming freshmen to ensure a smooth transition into high school. Through structured mentorship and regular check-ins, freshmen gain immediate connection, guidance, and belonging during one of the most pivotal years of their academic journey. This evolution of the program has strengthened school culture by fostering leadership, inclusion, and cross-grade relationships.
In addition, Ms. O'Connor co-founded Mr. & Ms. Pequannock, a senior-led charitable pageant that blends school pride with philanthropy. The event empowers seniors to celebrate one another while raising meaningful funds for charities of their choice. It reflects her belief that leadership and service should go hand in hand and provides students with an opportunity to leave a lasting, positive impact on their community.
Ms. O'Connor has earned the respect and admiration of students, parents, administrators, and colleagues alike. Students seek her out because they know she listens deeply and advocates fiercely on their behalf. Faculty collaborate with her because she brings initiative, organization, and thoughtful solutions. Parents trust her because she communicates with empathy and clarity.
Ms. O'Connor's passion for education and advocacy is personal. One of her family members with severe disabilities is only able to communicate through a specific form of sign language and expression. From a young age, Ms. O'Connor demonstrated extraordinary compassion and patience with them, learning how to understand and connect beyond words. The family member's face lights up when she walks into the room, and they find ways to let those around know when they miss her. That connection instilled in Ms. O'Connor a lifelong commitment to ensuring that every person, regardless of ability or circumstance, feels seen, heard, and valued. Her career in counseling is not simply a profession; it is an extension of who she is.

Ms. O'Connors warm and welcoming personality gave me a reason to smile every day. Her guidance and advice pointed me in the right direction and gave me valuable knowledge to help me make the right decisions, even if they were hard ones. I can always count on Ms. O'Connor to listen to me with her entire focus, even if it is a small problem I have, and to think through solutions to help me achieve the best possible outcome. Even though I graduate this year, there is no doubt in my mind she will be available if I ever need help in the future, especially with the challenges that the college transition poses. I am grateful for the opportunity to see and chat with her every day, and to never be turned away. Ms. O'Connor makes me feel so seen and important, and I am truly grateful for the difference she has made in my high school experience and the impact she has made on my life.
Miss O’Connor has been one of the biggest supporters throughout my high school years. No matter what I was going through, she was always there when I needed her. During my mental health challenges and the many bumps along the way, she helped guide me and made everything feel a little lighter.Whenever I had trouble with friends or felt unsure about things, she always gave the best advice and helped keep me on track. Her support made a huge difference in my life, and I truly don’t know what I would have done without her.
i graduate this year, and it is sad knowing I won’t be able talk to her every day anymore. But because of her, I was able to get through everything even things I didn’t think I was capable of. She is truly deserving of everything for the impact she has made on my life, many other students would agree.
