Melanie Derrough was nominated by her principal, Shabranda Mathis.

Ms. Derrough has transformed the lives of countless students by helping them believe in themselves, often for the very first time. She has taken students who once doubted their abilities and shown them that they are capable, brilliant, and worthy. She pushes them with love, teaches them with purpose, and celebrates them with genuine joy. Her classroom is a place where confidence is built, minds are stretched, and students feel safe to grow.
"For our staff, she has been a pillar of strength, encouragement, and unity—bringing people together, lifting their spirits, and modeling what it means to serve with heart," said Mathis. "For the campus, she has been a driving force behind our transformation—from an F to an A accountability rating. Her commitment, leadership, and relentless work ethic helped change not only our results but the entire school culture. Whitney M. Young Elementary is different because she is here."
From the moment Ms. Derrough stepped onto the campus, she became more than a teacher. She became a culture changer, a change agent, and a steady light for students and staff. She is the kind of educator whose presence shifts the atmosphere: calm where there was uncertainty, hope where there was doubt, and possibility where there were challenges. Her heart for children and her commitment to excellence radiate in everything she touches.
"As a principal, I did not have an assistant principal for the 2024-2025 school year, and Melanie immediately stepped in to support in every capacity needed. Without hesitation, she filled the gap, becoming the unwavering support that allowed our campus to move forward with strength, clarity, and purpose. She served as my unofficial assistant principal—standing beside me, uplifting teachers, and anchoring our instructional work. She led PLCs, coached teachers, facilitated meetings, organized professional development, arranged classroom coverage, and helped manage daily campus operations. She was everywhere the school needed her to be, often all at once. And remarkably, she accomplished all of this while still leading her own classroom with exceptional skill and deep love for her students," said Mathis.
"One day, after a long and demanding week, I watched her walk out of a PLC she had just facilitated—energizing teachers, offering clarity, and modeling excellence—and then return to her students with that same warmth and passion. I paused her and said, 'Melanie, thank you. I truly don't know how you do all of this.' She gave a gentle, humble smile and said, 'We do what we need to do for our kids. I'm here for them, and I'm here for you.' That moment stays with me because it captures who she is: selfless, servant-hearted, and transformational. Her impact on our campus was nothing short of remarkable," said Mathis.
Ms. Derrough played a critical role in helping Whitney M. Young Elementary move from an F to an A for the 2025–2026 school year. Her leadership, consistency, and unwavering belief in the students changed the school's trajectory. She didn't just support the work. She helped rebuild the culture, restore confidence, and reimagined what success could look like.
"My leadership has expanded and deepened because I have the opportunity to work alongside such a wonderful human being. She challenges all of us to strive to be better every single day. I often close my emails and newsletter messages with, 'Serving with You in mind," said Mathis. "Melanie reflects that spirit in everything she does, every day. She is the kind of educator every principal dreams of having on their team—dynamic, dedicated, passionate, and deeply committed to the success of every child and adult she serves. She embodies excellence in every sense of the word. Whitney M. Young Elementary is better because of her, and I am eternally grateful for the servant, leader, educator, and woman she is. Ms. Derrough is an awesome educator! She teaches 3rd grade math, while balancing administrative duties. Her students respect her and are always excited to go to her math class. Melanie Derrough is truly a Life Changer in every sense of the word. For over 17 years, she has dedicated herself to coaching cheerleading, positively impacting the lives of more than 1,000 athletes by building their confidence, discipline, and belief in themselves. Beyond coaching, she is a devoted mother and an inspiring third- and fourth-grade teacher who shows up every day with patience, kindness, and passion for her students.
