Ravinder Athwal was nominated by a colleague, Eran Zeevi.
Mr. Athwal is an outstanding member of the Bowman staff. Ravinder has been a teacher at Bowman since 2011. During his time there, he has made his mark by genuinely connecting with students and supporting them in their academic and emotional success. Ravinder works with his students, building relationships through trust, guidance, rigor, accountability, and care.
He values education, and is not afraid of taking on new tasks and challenges to grow as a professional in order to have a positive impact on his students. Ravinder wears many hats on campus, embracing his ability to support students. Ravinder is on his school's leadership team, professional development team, has been the Science Department chair, and has taught various new classes at Bowman including Astronomy and Physics. He attends NGSS workshops and conferences, staying on top of the Science NGSS movement.
In addition, Ravinder has been an intervention teacher for years, as well as a night school teacher for students over 18. Ravinder is extremely helpful to staff and their technology needs, providing professional development opportunities on Google Classroom, Kahoot, NearPod and Poll Everywhere.
Recently, Ravinder was one of 39 teachers from across the country who was chosen to participate in NASA’s Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors program called SOFIA, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. His mission will take place next school year onboard a Boeing 747 modified by NASA to become the world’s largest airborne observatory, flying at altitudes between 39,000 to 45,000 feet.
Ravinder genuinely connects with his students and gets them to buy into their own education. Bowman’s student population is over 70% boys, and Ravinder reaches out to them among their classes. As a Science teacher, he differentiates and modifies lessons, assignments, and projects to meet his students' needs. He maintains high standards, pushing them to succeed in areas they did not feel they could achieve in. Ravinder is persistent, and that, mixed with his passion for teaching has allowed him to constantly think outside the box and try new strategies and activities to reach his students.
"Ravinder is a well-balanced, enthusiastic, and driven life-long learner. Last year he received his Master's in Administration and has enthusiastically contributed his efforts to his school's WASC interim report and 2016 Model School application. He honorably values his position as an educator, and takes advantage of every opportunity to help students succeed.
Connecting with students is what he enjoys, and what he does well. "He is extraordinary with students, a team player with staff, and a well-respected teacher on campus," Zeevi said. "Bowman is very fortunate to have had Ravinder Athwal on its campus teaching our at-risk students for the past six years."

Mr.Athwal is let alone the most intelligent person I know. I have never meet anyone besides Mr.Athwal that you can literally and figuratively ask any question and it wont take him more then an instant to respond with 100% confidence and crystal clear explanation why. I have much respect for his morals such as he doesn't take school work home like every other teacher i have ever had, his time at home is dedicated to his family as it should be. I also appreciate how if 1,000 people asked him a question his answer would be exactly the same weather its the president or a 5th year high school student. By far the most deserving nominee!

I cannot speak more highly of Ravinder. His integrity, dependability, dedication, hard work, and ability to reach the most at risk students speaks for itself. As a teacher, co-worker, and leader, Ravinder has been such an incredible asset to our school. He gives his time freely to educate and help not only the students, but also the staff. His expertise with technology has been invaluable in terms of implementing technology meaningfully into the classroom for the benefit of student learning and in helping other teachers to do the same. Ravinder has stepped up to the plate for our school in so many ways. He has served as Science Department Chair, on the Leadership Team, on the Professional Development Team, on the District Science Common Core Implementation Team, as a co-testing coordinator for CAASPP, as the Night School Work Experience Coordinator, as an Intervention teacher for math, and as a substitute administrator (and this by no means is a comprehensive list). I have been working with Ravinder for seven years at our school site. In the time we've worked together I have seen Ravinder in the classroom many times working with students both in large groups and individually. He is a talented teacher, an expert in his subject matter, and has a strong talent for communicating complex concepts in a fun and comprehendible way. I also know Ravinder personally and I've spent time with him and his family. He is a caring father and a dedicated husband with a fierce commitment to his family and his friends. His work ethic is envyable and what amazes me about Ravinder is how he always is always so upbeat and positive. When Ravinder is working with students he is both patient and and adaptive to their needs. He mentors students in achademics as well as sharing his story of emigrating to the United States at a teenager. Students truly feel his authenticity. Ravinder is positive influencer and he is affecting the lives of his students everyday.
First off, Ravinder is an incredible human being. He is kind, funny, smart and passionate about what he does. He is a teacher who shows up each day with a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of his students and fellow staff.
