Maria De Veyra was nominated by Ayeshah Khan, a member of her community.

Dr. De Veyra is a phenomenal, no-nonsense teacher who deeply cares for her students. She takes the hard route by making sure her students learn real life skills and overcome their personal limitations. Her school now has students transferring from schools with larger facilities because Dr. De Veyra runs one of the best programs.

"I see how much heart she puts into her work and I think she deserves to be acknowledged for her hard work," Khan said.

I'm not sure I've ever met a person with so much passion for her students. She not only hopes for her students to be a success she expects it. She eagerly gives them all the tools they need to be a success in life. This year she lost her classroom and all of her matirials in a hurricane. She and her students relocated to another school and have had a successful first semester dispite losing everything.

Maria has always been very passionate about her work. She loves her students like her own and actually calls them 'my kids'. She's always thinking of better ways to help and teach them. Guiding and molding our children are the best things we could do for them to lead fruitful and independent lives. That's what Maria does for her students which in turn makes her a very valuable asset in her field. I am so happy that she's been nominated. She truly deserves this.

It is indeed a pleasure to have the opportunity to acknowledge and highlight the accomplishments of Maria DeVeyra. As a Special Education teacher for Life and Applied Skills students, one might call it a job but to Maria it is just an extension of her passion and innate desire to serve others and make a difference in the lives of those who are disabled and compromised. Individuals may be born with disabilities bringing about many challenges; if these individuals are not given the care and services they need they are further challenged and their quality of life is unnecessarily diminished to a greater degree. This is where Maria comes in- she has one of the most caring, and generous hearts and most importantly rarely sees the disability but rather their ability. Maria is very resourceful, creative and generous -- she goes above and beyond often dipping into her personal resources to make her dream for students happen. She has transformed many students- uncovering their gifts and talents and helping them to shine!

In this day and age when having an education is critical to find employment in a very challenging market. Her heart and passion is devoted to helping who is in need, may it be a friend or a stranger. The reckless action to do what is necessary to get the job done explains her demeanor. For others they choose to look the other way but with her its another obstacle to overcome with no hesitation. That is why she is a LIFECHANGER
