Thomas Muehleman  was nominated by a colleague, David Sellers.

"Mr. Muehleman is a model teacher. At Horace Mann Middle School, we look to Thomas as an example of how to make a life-changing difference in the lives of our students," Sellers said.

As an Intervention Math Teacher, Mr. Muehleman begins working with many of his students when they enter sixth grade. The work he does to help his students reach proficiency in middle school math is invaluable, but the story really begins with the way he lays the groundwork for success by making his students feel at home. He has a natural ability to show his students the understanding and respect they need to let down their guard. At the same time, he demands hard work and competence. This combination inspires his students to believe in themselves, work hard, and learn.

Mr. Muehleman is also a clear leader among his peers. Over the many years he has taught at Mann, he has participated in and led many school councils. In staff development meetings, he is an active participant who continually reminds his peers of their mission and suggests practical ways to manage and engage students at every level.

"The first thing anyone would notice about Thomas's character is that he is giving: of his time, through kind and encouraging words, and by bringing in food and other small gifts for staff and students. Students know they can go to Mr. Muehleman's room for help and that he will almost always be there!"  Sellers said. "Every time I pass his classroom after school or at lunch, I can see and hear a group of students from all grade levels being tutored. I am sure that there are over a hundred, if not hundreds, of students in our neighborhood who have only passed classes at Mann and learned skills they will take with them because of Thomas' generosity and love for our students."
