Walter Henderson was nominated by a member of the community, Robert Marchewka.

Mr. Henderson has transformed education for Boston's Haitian community by creating the Toussaint L'Ouverture Academy, the nation's first Haitian Creole–English dual-language immersion program. Under his visionary leadership, the program provides young children with rigorous instruction in both languages, while fostering cultural pride, biliteracy, and self-confidence. By integrating culturally sustaining practices, inclusive classrooms, and strong family engagement, he ensures that every student has the support, guidance, and opportunities they need to thrive academically and personally.

Through the Haitian Immersion Program, he has built a school environment that celebrates identity, promotes equity, and inspires achievement. Students not only excel in English language acquisition and literacy, but develop a strong sense of belonging and pride in their heritage. His unwavering commitment to his students and their families extends beyond academics: he is deeply invested in mentorship, community connection, and creating pathways for lifelong success.

"Walter Henderson is a true LifeChanger. He has redefined what is possible for immigrant and multilingual students in Boston, ensuring that children who might otherwise be marginalized have access to a high-quality education, cultural affirmation, and the tools to reach their full potential. His leadership, vision, and dedication embody the spirit of the award and have had a profound, lasting impact on the lives of hundreds of children and their families," said Marchewka.
