Nancy Lindquist was nominated by a colleague who wishes to remain anonymous.
Many staff at Westside Elementary are "Lifechangers" but Nancy has committed 30 years of her life to being a teacher at Westside and has always transformed her classroom into a family and a community of learners. She takes extra time and care to develop deep and loving relationships with the children and with their families.
This past year, Nancy had a student who transferred to the school, disliked school, and had little to no self esteem as a learner. Nancy taught her in the summer of 2016 in Summer School and began building a relationship with the girl and the student's grandmother, since grandma was the primary caregiver. The student loved Nancy and grandma knew having her at Westside and continuing with Nancy as her teacher would be the girl's saving grace. As the 2016-17 year began, Nancy worked tirelessly to differentiate the curriculum for this student who was at least three years behind. Mostly, Nancy wanted to honor who the student was and where she came from. Nancy wanted her to feel like a 4th grader even though she could not do the academic work of a 4th grader. Nancy set up a "buddy situation" for a portion of the day when this 4th grader would help in a Grade 1 classroom during reading time. The student was exposed to appropriate level curriculum, in a sense, without know it. After months of spending extra time with this student and her grandmother, the student qualified for Special Education and ended the year making great gains both academically and socially. She became a learner, she became more confident and she developed a more positive outlook.
Nancy has also positively added to the development of her school's atmosphere by being tenacious when it comes to developing and revising procedures and policies that impact managing student behaviors. Nancy serves on both the district and school level Character Education Steering Committees. She has mentored many new teachers, and she serves on the Building Leadership Team. Nancy was one of the teachers who researched and developed Westside's current philosophy regarding behaviors. Westside does not believe in rewards and extrinsic motivation, they believe in holding children accountable and helping them learn that it's okay to make mistakes. She helped develop the "Reflection Sheet" which is completed by the student and she is a champion of the importance of the adult/student interaction before, during, and after completing this Reflection Sheet. Nancy has taken courses in Love & Logic, Responsive Classroom, and has read extensively the work of Alfie Kohn. "Many staff go to Nancy for advice when managing student behaviors and I, personally, have learned from watching Nancy," the nominator said.
Nancy is that type of educator who walks the talk. She is committed to producing a nurturing atmosphere, not only in her own classroom but also in her school. Nancy helped her school earn a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 2014 and she traveled to Washington DC to accept this award. "Nancy will not like that I have nominated her for this award, because she knows and believes that we are a team and that it takes all of us to be Lifechangers in this world," the nominator said.
Parents, former students, and fellow staff members recognize that Nancy has that unique abilitiy to "get into a child's world", build relationships, and foster academic and social achievement. "Nancy has a positive and humorous attitude day in and day out," the nominator said. "She is always willing to look at issues from other people's perspective and she is a consensus builder. Nancy has a record of excellent performance and it is my privilege to nominate Nancy as a Lifechanger."

As one who feels extremely fortunate to have worked with Nancy for most of those years, I also know how positively she impacted the staff at Westside. What sets Mrs Lindquist apart from all the other extremely talented educators is her ability to foster the uniqueness of every child. Each child in her classroom develops a confidence in themselves that sends them off knowing that they are loved, their feeling matter, they are brilliant and they will grow up to do great things. My 6th grade daughter had her 2 years ago and still draws daily from from self-affirmation skills she developed in Mrs Lindquist's class. On challenging peer days in middle school, she smiles remembering the 15 minutes of full out, rock and roll, booty shaking, mad skill dance parties her 4th grade class championed. During their daily snack break, Mrs Lindquist agreed to allow the class to play music. It quickly evolved in to a kid-lead 15 minute dance party where every kid felt inspired to dance like nobody was watching. It created such an amazing bond within the class that individual confidence soared and those kids are now strong peer leaders and includers in middle school. The kids were extremely respectful of their dance party privilege. At the end of each 15 minute break, they quietly returned to their seats, ready to absorb knowledge. Mrs Lindquist stayed in the background and used the time to prep for the next lesson, but the atmosphere to create such a powerful experience was completely set by the confidence, inclusion and love for life she transmits to every child. Nancy is not only a wonderful coworker but also a superb teacher. As the secretary of Westside, I think she is so very easy to work with and her positive attitude is contagious! Both of my daughters have had her as a teacher. She helped my oldest daughter through a rough time at the beginning of fourth grade. My daughter was very anxious and she partnered with us to overcome it and she has now blossomed into a confident young lady in Middle School. My youngest has her this year and to watch her be excited to read and come to school is awesome. Nancy not only teaches the curriculum but also teaches those valuable life skills of kindness, perseverance, positive attitude, honesty, and many more. I love seeing her smiling face everyday at work and am truly honored to call her a coworker and friend!

Nancy is easily one of the best teachers that we have had the privilege of working with. Our son was in her classroom last year. Reading was not his favorite subject, he struggled to find books that he was interested in and kept him motivated. Throughout the year Nancy tried a few different strategies with our son and by the end of the year he loved reading. He would get home from school and pull his book out of his backpack so he could find out what happened in the story. He would read at restaurants and on weekends. In addition to helping him find his love of reading, Nancy encouraged her class to be kind, learn from mistakes, take chances and be good friends. Not only did our son achieve (and surpass) his academic goals, he learned so much about his classmates and really enjoyed being part of Nancy's class. We absolutely could not have been more blessed to have Nancy in our lives, our son is lucky to have had the opportunity to be in her room. We truly cannot thank her enough.
Mrs. Nancy Lindquist was my son's teacher for fourth grade. Nancy is a naturally talented and gifted teacher. She sees students where they are at and for whom they are. She personalizes learning and the environment for them in an effort to help them find learning fun and successful. My son still talks about he and is now so thrilled to have her daughter as his sixth grade teacher!
Mrs. Lindquist was my fourth grade teacher very early in her teaching career. She had a passion for learning, serving and teaching that inspired me a great deal. In 4th grade, I made a clear decision that I wanted to become an educator and have a positive impact on the lives of others similar to what Mrs. Lindquist did for me. Almost 30 years ago, she helped light the spark that has led me to invest in others. As a colleague of hers on some levels, it's apparent that her fire to help others achieve greatness still burns inside her.
It truly is a privilege to recommend Nancy for this award. I worked with her for six years in a 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade unit. We planned regularly, interacted daily to meet the needs of our students. She was always focused on how to connect with all students to make learning meaningful and allowing students to interact across the grades. It was enlightening to watch her in action, with her creativity, sense of humor, but always placing the child's feelings first. She is filled with compassion and made her class come together as a working, thoughtful family as the year progressed. She discovered the needs of her students quickly and worked with each individual to accommodate their needs. Her positive reinforcement was always present. She truly was an asset to our school climate. Leadership was done with a "listening ear," open to other ideas and willing to compromise when needed. I believe every child Nancy has taught will have had a positive life changing experience in her classroom!
Nancy is an amazing educator! I felt very blessed that all three of my children were able to enjoy a year in her classroom. I also am blessed to call her my colleague! She is a master at creating a safe, comfortable, close knit learning environment. Children realize they are loved and accepted for who they are. This allows them to thrive and grow, not only academically, but emotionally as well. She is most definitely a lifechanger!
Nancy Lindquist is most definitely a Lifechanger! I can speak to that personally. About 16 years ago, I was hired to work at Westside Elementary school as a paraprofessional working with special education students. It was during my 4 years as a paraprofessional that I was privileged to support students in Nancy's classroom. I experienced first hand how Nancy interacted and fostered the development of the students within her classroom. Nancy has a joy and excitement about her that just shines through her while she is teaching.
One of the biggest Lifechanging moments for me was when I had decide to go back to school (I was in my late thirties) and get my certification in special education so that I could become a special education teacher. This was a very scary time for me. I had a lot of self doubt and was not sure how I would manage going back to school, working part time as a paraprofessional, and caring for my 3 children and my husband.
One of my first assignments was to evaluate a 4th grade curriculum. I honestly had no idea where I was going to find the information that I needed. I recalled working in Nancy's 4th grade classroom and had decided that she would be someone who might be able to help me. I didn't have Nancy's telephone number, but I knew where she lived. So one day during summer vacation, I unexpectedly stopped by Nancy's house. I was full of anxiety and was ready to tell myself at any moment that the task before me of going back to school was far more than I could handle and that I shouldn't do it. I walked up to Nancy's door and knocked on it. I was greeted by Nancy with her usual smile and outgoing personality. She immediately reached out to me and invited me into her home. I told Nancy what I needed and she was overflowing with encouragement and support of my decision to become a teacher. Honestly, that day Nancy Lindquist changed my life! She not only offered to go to school later that day to rummage through all her things that she had already packed away for the summer to get me the curriculum material that I needed, she filled me up with encouragement and it was without a doubt when I left her house that day that I would indeed become a special education teacher. That is exactly what happened two year later when I received my certification in special education!
After ten years of teaching special education students in the Ellsworth School District, I was hired last year to work at Westside Elementary School as a special education teacher. I was able to work along side of Nancy once again as we shared several students. I watched her love and care for her/our students in the same way I had many years ago. Never ending love, hugs, support, and passion for these kids! Several of our shared students had very difficult home situations. Nancy was always trying to find additional supports for these kids and didn't stop until she found what they needed.
It is without a doubt that Nancy Lindquist has been and will continue to be a Lifechanger! I am so thankful to be able to work alongside of and learn from someone like Nancy Lindquist.
Nancy is not only a collgue of mine, but was my son's teacher last year. We had just moved to the district and my son was nervous about attending a school where he didn't know anyone. From the moment they met, Nancy made an instinst connection with my son and put his nervousness at ease. Nancy welcomed Evan (and myself new to the school) with wide, open arms. She loves each of her students and this love shows. Her classroom is a community of equality, and she teaches her students how to become good humans! She does not precipitate on mistakes, instead she encourages students to reflect and gives them the skill to overcome the hurdles in life. Nancy touches the lives of everyone she comes in contact with. I fell blessed Evan was fortunate to have Nancy as a teacher. I am blessed to have her as a collegue and most of all to have her as a friend.

Nancy Lindquist elevates teaching to a whole new level. She has a gift to make school and learning fun and even more imporant she builds self esteem; I'm certain everyone student in her class ends the school year with more confidence. My children left Nancy's class ready to take on the world - Nancy is definitely a life changer!
I personally do not know Nancy, but from reading this I feel I have a very good grasp of what a wonderful, caring, and dedicated teacher she is. I am impressed in many ways about this great teacher. She not only teaches her students and helps train new teachers. Sharing her insights, skills and wonderful attitude. Those of you may know me from when I use to work at the police department and taught the 5th graders a program called CounterAct. I had a very limited exposure as a teacher, but know how difficult being a teacher is. Nancy accepted the challenge and used her gift to help her students and chose to not attach labels, but to help students to feel better about themselves and that helps them to want to learn. Congratulations to a well deserving teacher.
The nomination of Nancy Lindquist for this award is well deserved. I've known Nancy for over 25 years, as a friend and fellow staff member. She taught me so much during the hours we spent together planning and team teaching lessons to our students. As the evening shadows grew long in her classroom, Nancy and I would often be writing comments and discussing our students' progress. In addition to making me a better teacher, I watched her change the lives of many others. Nancy has always maintained a high degree of professionalism even in extremely difficult situations. She has the ability to listen, solve problems and keep the team positive.
I've also known Nancy as a parent. Our children were the same ages and I had a front row seat to seeing Nancy carry her passions for others into the friends of her own children. My children grew through knowing her children. When my daughter was beginning to interview for teaching positions, Nancy took the time to practice interviewing with her, giving her solid advice. Again, Nancy did this for several people. She consistently works to build thoughtful, honest and caring relationships. I am grateful your organization recognizes people who do make a difference in the lives of so many people. Nancy is a perfect fit for this honor!
To Nancy Lindquist, my dear friend and colleague of almost 30 years...I struggled to find words that hadn't already been written about what a wonderful, kind, thoughtful, and inspiring teacher you are. Then the following lyrics from a song came to mind, "You raise [us] up to more than [we] can be". For me, these words exemplify what you do for the students and staff at Westside Elementary. You are truly a Lifechanger and most deserving of the award.
As a volunteer, it's been my pleasure to work with Nancy Lindquist for a number of years as a Rotary Reader with some of her slower learners and as a tutor with some of her faster math learners. This past year she chose a slow reader with issues and teamed him with a very good reader with different issues, continually communicating to me their needs and how I could help these two boys. She provided her incredibly loving support to both of them in completely different ways dealing with their issues. She chose the accelerated math students and again, nurtured and helped me push them carefully, not allowing their young ego's to cause any problems with the rest of her class. Her enthusiasm and dedication to helping her students grow and excel yet caring that they be comfortable within their young "skins" is extraordinary for this old man to observe!

We were fortunate enough that our oldest daughter had Mrs. Lindquist for 4th grade. She had such a fantastic school year and grew both academically and emotionally. Mrs. Lindquist spoke such words of encouragement to her and the entire class. These encouraging words about her writing has helped Amelia to really blossom as a writer/author. As a parent, I love that Mrs. Lindquist got to know my daughter and was able to challenge and affirm her to go beyond what she thought she could do. I so appreciate that, as a teacher, she didn't just do the bare-minimum and get through the school year, but she truly loved, supported, cared, inspired, and treasured her class full of students. My daughter was in Ms. Lindquist's class last year and I was so impressed by how she inspired and challenged her to keep learning and exploring. Ms. Lindquist really helped our daughter connect with how her life in our community impacts others, how the history of the town and surrounding area has influenced what we see today, and how our daughter can be a part of the future with regarding to making decisions. I was also captivated by her very personal style of teaching and the way she made time to connect with each student. Of course, it was always fun to see the way she brought history alive and got parents involved in projects. I know our daughter loved being in her class and somehow was hoping that she would be changing grade levels so she could have her again! We feel very fortunate that she is one of many excellent teachers in our school.

At the start of 4th grade I was nervous because all my friends were spread out and I was without any of my friends in Mrs. Lindquist's classroom. The first day of school she was at the door waiting. I loved that! We would have a circle every morning and at the end of the day, where we talk about our day and also got to know each other better. I remember a lot about fourth grade from the awesome dance parties and the good books the we read. I have to say Mrs. Lindquist is the reason I would relive that awesome year. Mrs. Lindquist pulled our whole class together as one big family. She is one of the best teachers I have had. That's why the end of 4th grade was so hard. I hope that Mrs. Lindquist wins this award because she is a life changer in my world.

Such a deserving nominee! I will be forever grateful for the impact that she had on my son Cooper. Cooper was in Mrs. Lindquist's class for fourth grade and ended up in that class without any of his close friends. Mrs. Lindquist could see that he was having a hard time feeling comfortable and worked to get him engaged in leadership, nurturing his kind disposition. He advanced academically that year but it was really the emotional development she fostered that has led to his ongoing success. He still says she is his favorite teacher ever. She has such an amazing gift to meet each student where they are, see what they need to excel, and give them every opportunity. She is a lifechanger indeed!!
Nancy Lindquist is definitely a "LifeChanger". The definition of LifeChanger fits her approach to students and the effort she puts into each and every child that passes through her classroom and/or even the school. I was fortunate to have her impact our family in so many ways...I was blessed to be in her class the first year she taught at Westside. I then was thankful she was still there when my 2 boys went through Westside Elementary and both had her as a teacher. She will be forever a special part of our families memories. She puts so much passion into each student and figures out what makes them click. Even more importantly, she also develops a partnership with the parents as well to ensure all are on the same page and their is consistency for the student both in the classroom and at home. I think all of this (and more) are reasons she was always my favor school teacher and a favorite of my boys as well...She goes above and beyond the academics to impact students lives in their own unique way. The passion Nancy brings to the classroom everyday is intoxicating. The dedication she makes to every child in the classroom is incredible. I had the honor of having Nancy as my daughter's 4th grade teacher last year and am grateful everyday that I did. Nancy's commitment to the children's learning and well being and communication with parents is unparalleled. She changed my daughters outlook on school (math in particular) and helped to raise her self esteem by leaps and bounds.
I had an opportunity to chaperone a field trip with the class last year. As I walked into class I witnessed her greet every child individually with an attentive good morning, a hand shake or comforting hug and ask them how they are doing. No child was left out and she was so engaged with each and everyone of them it left me speechless. As we were leaving one of the children said they forgot their lunch for the field trip. Without hesitation Nancy sprung into action. Splitting her own lunch and foraging the classroom to ensure the child had a well balanced lunch for the afternoon. The entire field trip was filled with these types of actions from Nancy. I was amazed by the caring, patient, kind, loving, respect and authority she displayed through out the day.
I can never thank her enough for what she has done for my daughter and our family. It is with great emotion that I say, "Thank you Mrs. Lindquist. You are a Lifechanger."
Nancy, I read this and I am so very proud of you! Being your sister I have watched you grow up in teaching, watching first our Father and then being mentored by so many others. I have spent hour listening to your inspirational stories of your years teaching. I have watched you around my three daughters, your nieces, inspiring them from a very young age. You always go the extra mile for any child that needs it. You keep in touch with your students encouraging them in their studies and career choices. I am so proud to support this nomination.
Passion for Education is in the blood of the best teachers, and Nancy is one of those. Amazing and very admirable to think of all of the children's life's you have positively impacted. I was never ready for summers to end and send the kids back to school. Every school year I'd think about how our children's teachers would be spending more waking hours with my kids during the school year then I would be. I'm so grateful for the year and positive role you played in Alisons life. Grateful to live in a community filled with so many great teachers. Mrs. Lindquist makes learning so easy and fun! She always made me so excited for school because of the deep connection she works so hard to form with all her students. Mrs. Lindquist puts a lot of extra time into each student, figuring out their learning style. She always wants what's best for us and she'll change her way of teaching so her students will be excited about learning. She believes that we are a team and that everyone is accountable for mistakes, but we also share success. She gets to know each and every single one of the kids in her class on a personal level so they can form a better partnership, and understand each other better. Words can't describe the deep love and respect he still has for you. A few years have gone by, and he still recalls all of the fun learning within your classroom. What he remembers most of all, though, is your sincere regard for his well-being and overall development in becoming a confident young man. We appreciate you more than you know!
