Ms. G is an overall amazing teacher. She has had rough life like others, but her story of her life has touched me more. She has showed her family, friends and students the best in her even at her worst moments. Ms.G has taught me to never have my head down in situations I feel as if I feel alone. She has always made sure to keep everyone bright and point out the little things in them. I would love for anyone to have a teacher like her.

Mrs. G was one of the greatest teachers I had at Morton East! I graduated in 2017 and I am forever grateful to have had one of the very few Latina teachers in the school. The way she cared about us and wanted each and every one of us to be successful was the very reason why I had originally pursued an education in teaching. Having her as a teacher was like a breath of fresh air. I felt seen, validated, and genuinely cared for being a minority student in a predominantly Hispanic school. Her positive energy and inspiration made you want to learn and keep learning. Mrs. G is one of the most impactful teachers that Morton has. She cares deeply and wants students to be successful in life and pursue things they love. I will forever be thankful to have crossed paths with her and love to see how she continues to be a positive influence for students. Mrs. G is a life changer of year, and always. Thank you

Sofia is an incredible mentor and leader. As an adult educator for the US Youth Ambassadors program in Argentina, she brought so much passion to every day of the program- sharing her experiences and philosophy on social justice, helping students navigate the challenge of acclimating to a new country, and getting to know every student as an individual. She cares deeply about every student, and is building change in her community and beyond.

Mrs. G is more than a teacher; she's a role model. Every day she shows up to school with so much love to give even when going through. She's intentional, determined, and consistent towards all of her students. Currently, she's going through a tough time in her life, but her light is still so bright. Her love is still so loud. And her voice carries so much weight and value. She ingrains so much wisdom and life in us daily. There isn't a day that goes by where she isn't instilling greatness and speaking prosperous lives over us. Before meeting Ms. G I was still finding my voice, but after all the conversations and lessons it made me want to strive more for myself and do more with my voice. She deserves nothing more than to be honored for constantly changing and saving lives daily.

Sofia Gonzalez has a rare gift: she transforms every room she enters. As a speaker, advocate, and educator, she possesses the kind of passion and dedication that spreads to everyone around her. I've known Sofia for several years, and in every single interaction, she centers the work on students. Not the abstract idea of students, but real young people whose voices she actively elevates and whose futures she fights for relentlessly. People leave conversations with Sofia energized and recommitted to advocating for marginalized students. She models what authentic advocacy looks like through her actions and unwavering consistency. She doesn't inspire through rhetoric. She inspires because she genuinely believes every student deserves someone in their corner, and she lives that belief every day. If I had to sum Sofia up in two words: passionate advocacy.

Mrs. G, or Sofia as you all may know her as, is my biggest inspiration to never give up. She has shown that hardships are our superpowers. No matter the how big the injustices are we must fight for them with all our might because if we don’t who will? Sofia is such a dedicated and passionate person when it comes to her work and you definitely will not find someone more on it than her. She has broken down so many barriers and will continue to break down more to get to where she is needed to fix these injustices fight for equity and fight for those that aren’t given the same chances as other may have. She is the voice for those that are silent and she is resilient in her work.

Davina Posted 7 months ago

I’ve never met a teacher who carries her passion the way Sofia does. Her care goes far beyond the classroom—it reaches every student she encounters, even those she doesn’t directly teach, like me. From my perspective, she has a way of making you feel seen, valued, and protected, especially in spaces where it’s easy to feel overlooked. During my time in high school, Sofia made me realize that educators can truly care about you as a person, not just as a name on a roster. I may not have fit into every category she spoke about, but her dedication to students of all ages—their safety, well-being, and futures—brought a sense of comfort and reassurance that is hard to put into words. She shows up every day with intention, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the children she serves. Sofia has also inspired me to be a better person—not just for myself, but for my future and my career. Through the things she’s shared with me, she helped me understand that if you feel a calling in your life—if you see something that needs to change or believe you can make something better—then you should go for it. She taught me to trust that instinct, to lead with purpose, and to believe that meaningful change is possible when you’re brave enough to pursue it. What stands out most about Sofia is her heart. She is loving, kind, and deeply genuine. When she walks into a room, she brings warmth, peace, and a sense of ease that makes you feel safe just being there. Whether she’s in a classroom, at a community event, or advocating in spaces where students need someone to fight for them, she does it with grace, courage, and purpose. If we had more people like Sofia—people who are truly passionate about what they do, who take their work seriously, and who show up every day with care and intention—the world would be a much better place. Sofia doesn’t just teach; she advocates, protects, and uplifts. This work is not just her career—it is her calling. And because of that, so many lives have been changed, including mine.

Sofia Gonzalez deserves Life Changer of the Year because she truly lives for her students and her community. She shows up every single day ready to fight for social justice, for equity, and for young people who don’t always get the chances they deserve. She’s stood with her students through some of the hardest moments, including losing a few to gang violence, and she still finds the strength to turn that pain into purpose. Sofia uses her voice to make real change—locally and across the country. She speaks honestly about what minority students and teachers of color face, and she pushes for the kind of education reform that could actually change lives. She inspires people to do better, to care more, and to understand the realities our communities deal with. She doesn’t just talk about change—she creates it. That’s why Sofia truly is a life changer, and why she deserves this award.
