Laurie Andersen was nominated by her principal, Wendy Kerr.

Laurie is always helpful and cheerful. Simply walk into the library any day and at any time, regardless of how busy or stressful it is, and she is smiling, joyful, and positive. She meets with administration at the beginning of each year to make sure she is involved in the vision of the school. She connects all of the library activities to the seven Habits with her “Reader Leaders," and leads student recognition at all assemblies with Accelerated Reader (A/R) awards, class competitions, and several book fairs each year. Laurie has spearheaded many of the school's literacy programs like A/R and Read Across America because she wants what is best for the students of Live Oak Elementary School.

"Many days during the week, you can walk through the library and as she is checking out books, you can overhear her conversations with students about the book they are reading. She adores engaging in book review commentaries!" Kerr said. "Kids will take time on their lunch break to go see Ms. Andersen to share how they completed a book, give her a blow-by-blow comprehensive review of the plot, characters and ending and then express their critiques---they can’t wait to share their opinions with her." Every year she tracks the reading data and offers the top readers of the school to participate in "Kids Take Over the School". Live Oak students look forward to this day each May, as they get to take the lead in each adult role on campus and become the teacher, librarian, nurse, secretary, or principal and partake in a student-staff luncheon with certificates.

She is recognized for her ability to multi-task with a smile on her face and grace in her heart. When the staff submitted their ballots (both classified and certificated), it was evident that Ms. Andersen demonstrates the seven Habits and characteristics of a beloved and trusted school librarian. One Live Oak team member said she, “is a constant professional in everything she does. She is incredibly organized and technically meticulous in her job roles and responsibilities. Her students absolutely love her, and this becomes a catalyst towards a love for reading. Her passion and love for her students is evident in her day-to-day interactions."

She motivates them and encourages them to read every single day and celebrates with kids as they attain their goals," Kerr said. "She truly is passionate about her job and about her students! Laurie is truly deserving of this honor."
