Music that Describes Sister Kathy

Sister Kathy Berube was nominated by Patricia Gray, the head of her school.

Sister Kathy is celebrating her 60th year as a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston. She still plays a critical role in the lives of students, faculty, and families at Jackson Walnut Park School. Although she now serves as a Liturgist. She is primarily known for her work as a Latin Teacher for fifth and sixth-grade children.

Three phrases describe Sister Kathy in her Latin classroom: firm and fun, lovely and loving, and thorough and thoughtful. However, these simple thoughts could never entirely describe the impact she has had on students over the years at Jackson Walnut Park School.

When Sister Kathy fell due to an accident and had to be away from school due to surgery, the children were almost inconsolable. Given Sister Kathy's disciplinarian style in class, it's conceivable that students might have been sad about the fall, but ready for a break from work! Yet they all complained because they weren't learning enough while Sister Kathy was away on medical leave. In short, Sister Kathy instilled a passion for learning and a love of structure in her students' hearts.

"As an educator and head of ministry at Jackson Walnut Park, I believe that Sister Kathy is beloved because she inspires and nurtures her students. Outside of the Latin class, she selects the readings for Mass celebrations, and her careful choice of passages is spiritually instructive for the students," said Gray.

Sr. Kathy's students' thoughts are the best indication of how she has truly been a LifeChanger. Below are a few quotes from them:

"A life lesson I'll cherish is the importance of kindness and helping others. Sister Kathy is my role model because she embodies generosity everywhere she goes and is the most caring person I have ever met. She showed deep concern for us as students and wanted us to absorb everything she taught. Her goal was not only for us to complete our work to the best of our ability, but also to have fun and leave class feeling blessed rather than stressed. Words that describe her include kind, patient, and inspiring."

"Over time, I have come to believe that Sister Kathy's dedication to the intellectual growth of young people is rooted in her conviction that mastering language is essential for understanding one another. Additionally, she sees it as a powerful tool for advocating and promoting social good. I wholeheartedly agree with this perspective, and I credit Sister Kathy for helping me develop this belief. Not a week goes by without drawing on the foundation she established in my education and thought processes. I am confident that her other students would express similar sentiments."

"Sister Kathy has truly transformed my life. She taught us so much and inspired me to want to learn even more. She changed my perspective on school. I have always loved school, but when I met her for the first time in fifth grade, I thought she would be very strict and no fun at all. However, after that first class, I eagerly looked forward to Latin! She showed me that first impressions can have a significant impact on future success!"

Sister Kathy is a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston. She embodies their mission, which is both simple and profound: to love all neighbors without distinction and to provide an education that nurtures hearts, minds, and spirits. Her colleagues at Jackson Walnut Park School consistently highlight her dedication to supporting both students and colleagues with care and compassion.

Sister Kathy plans and leads inspiring Masses and retreats that strengthen the connections within the school community, including parents and the other Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston. They all attest to her unwavering commitment to service, promoting intellectual growth, and loving everyone without distinction.

What I like most about Sister Kathy is that she has remained involved at JWP. She continues to share her love of God with the community by organizing readings for the children. We hope to see her at Our Lady's next week.

Sr. Barube has touched so many young lives during her tenure as a teacher! Like so many of her Sisters (Sisters of St. Joseph), she has given rather than taken!

Sister Kathy has been an amazing teacher, as well as a hardworking and deeply caring Mission Integration Facilitator for the Sisters of Saint Joseph. I had the opportunity to work with her as a fellow Mission Integration Facilitator, and it was truly a pleasure and an honor to work alongside her. I learned so much from her dedication and the care with which she diligently prepared meetings for faculty and staff.

Sister Kathy has positively influenced so many in the JWP/CSJ community. She is a bright light, dedicated to her craft and someone who was there to listen and offer helpful advice. Her bond with students was inspirational as well as her passion for Latin. One thing I really loved about Sister Kathy was her humor. She found ways to always make me laugh and smile. She truly is a life changer!

It has been an honor to work with Sister Kathy. Sister Kathy is one of the best listeners. No matter what was going on during her busy school day, Sister Kathy would always find time to listen to my kindergartners' stories. Sister Kathy was the first person my students saw as they entered the building each morning. Last year's kindergartners still ask about Sister Kathy, and are very excited to see her at Mass and other Jackson Walnut Park events.

I was fortunate to work alongside Sister Kathy for nearly two decades. Every morning Sister would have a cheery greeting for everyone entering the school. She has a great love for children and they certainly returned that love surrounding her with joy. We spent many moments laughing and listening to each others stories of the challenges and ironies in our days, weeks and years. Sister Kathy enjoyed riddles with the younger students and mathematical challenges with our older students. Sister Kathy encouraged us to understand, by her example, of our importance in the smaller and greater community, Most of all she reminded us of how to rise to our best selves, loving each other and God.

Sister Kathy was a great teacher for many years, admired and respected by both teachers and students alike. Everyone looked up to her—not only for her knowledge, but for the calm confidence and care she brought to everything she did. She was a master at teaching Latin, but she was equally remarkable at putting schedules together. To this day, I still don’t know how she managed to create schedules for every grade level, but somehow she did—and they were always perfect. It was a gift that made everyone’s job easier and the school run smoothly. When I taught first grade, Sister Kathy would come into my classroom and watch my students during lunch. My children absolutely loved having her. Every day they would ask, “How many more minutes until lunch? We can’t wait to see Sister Kathy!” They started asking the moment they walked into the classroom each morning. They loved how she taught them Latin during lunch, and as Sister Kathy would say, they always kept her thinking and working hard. Thank you, Sister Kathy, for all you have done for JWP. We were so lucky to have you as a faculty member, but most importantly, as our friend.

Sister Kathy is one of the most dedicated teachers I have ever met. She was truly devoted to teaching Latin and was also exceptional at planning Mass at our school. During my first year working at JWP, I had the pleasure of sharing a classroom with her, and she was truly a joy to work with. She brought love, light, and laughter everywhere she went. The following year, I had the privilege of working alongside her to help plan our school Masses, and she taught me how to run a Mass independently. Sister Kathy is a fantastic leader, and she played a significant role in helping me become who I am today. Not only did she shape my future but she also helped shape the lives of many students.

Sister Kathy made a huge impression on both of my sons when they were in her class at JWP. My oldest continues to take Latin as his language in both middle school and high school. Thanks for all you’ve done to encourage your students!

Sister Kathy is truly a life-changer in every sense of the word. As our school's former elementary Latin teacher, she opened doors to language, history, and critical thinking in a way that ignited curiosity and confidence in young learners. More than teaching a subject, she brought meaning and joy to learning, helping students see themselves as capable scholars and encouraged to "find what moves you" in education. Through her work in mission integration, Sister Kathy embodies the values she teaches—faith, service, and purpose—making the mission visible and lived each day. Her quiet leadership, deep commitment, and unwavering care for students and colleagues alike have shaped our community in lasting ways. The impact of her work and guidance are felt still now, long after students had her as teacher. Along with teaching, her leadership and passionate presence make her a most deserving candidate for LifeChanger of the Year.

Sr. Kathy is a marvelous inspiring educator. Our first experience with Sr. Kathy's gifts were at the Choir school in Cambridge (BACS) where my son (now 32) benefited greatly from Sr Kathy's fairness, leadership and her unwavering commitment to the success of each boy. She is very deserving of this award, and I fully support her nomination!
