Paul Pennington was nominated anonymously.
Mr. Pennington's influence throughout his career is far-reaching. Athletes from his coaching days recall fond memories, and several have expressed that he inspired them to pursue a career in education. He is full of energy, fist-bumping kids throughout the hallways every day with a smile and asking them how they're doing.
As the Director of Athletics and Activities, he is the driving force behind the leadership development of team captains through his Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) group. Coaches and visitors who attend EHS events regularly comment on how smoothly and professionally the events are run. He encourages pride in the rich legacy that Elgin High School represents, as he is not only a graduate himself but also the father of two graduates.
He is now the longest-serving administrator at Elgin High School, having spent years devoted to elevating the school's reputation and fiercely advocating for its students. He has become the go-to for other administrators to understand the culture of Elgin High School and the needs of its students and community. Staff there know that Mr. Pennington IS Elgin High School, the embodiment of "East Side Maroon Pride." He has been called on to lead other athletic directors in both the district and conference. He has achieved his Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) credential through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) and leads with humility and a lack of desire to spotlight himself.
All of his efforts are purely for the recognition of his students, who are often underrepresented. When working with students, he listens, gives them a voice, is fair, and does not minimize their concerns. He is their strongest advocate. Students always come first with him. He operates with integrity and is concerned with the well-being of those around him, often taking work worries home and spending countless evenings and weekends pouring into his programs.
"He rarely considers himself when it comes to the extra effort it might take to give kids the very best opportunities. People see his passion every day and often comment on it, encouraging him to take care of himself in the process. A person like Paul Pennington needs to be reminded of how all of his efforts are noticed and appreciated beyond measure," said the nominator.
