Dr. Thomas is a distinguished educator, leader, and teacher mentor serving students at Sumter Central High School in York, Alabama. A veteran educator with 18 years of experience, she currently teaches Health Education to multiple grade levels and serves as the district test coordinator. Dr. Thomas is known for empowering students and supporting fellow educators with innovative instructional strategies, compassionate guidance, and a commitment to excellence. She has significantly impacted local, district, and state levels through her work in physical education, health, and instructional leadership.
Several years ago, Dr. Thomas noticed a need within her rural community school. She realized that students who were not athletes lacked access to the equipment needed for cardiovascular development and physical fitness. A born problem-solver and visionary leader, Dr. Thomas secured a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, making it possible to establish the Sumter Central Fitness Room. The equipment is available to all students, staff, and faculty at SCHS.
Throughout her career, Dr. Thomas has been honored with numerous awards and accolades, including the title of Alabama State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Teacher of the Year, Sumter Central High School Teacher of the Year (2022), Sumter Central High School Teacher of the Month (August 2025), and she recently acquired National Board Certification. The accolades and awards are not why she shows up every day as a champion for students and fellow educators. Dr. Thomas chose the field of education as a career path because of her genuine belief that an education can transform lives. Growing up, she was inspired by teachers who not only taught content but also encouraged her to see her own potential.
For Dr. Thomas, education is much more than academics; it is about guiding, motivating, and equipping students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in life. Her "why" statement is reminiscent of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote: "Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education." Students in Dr. Thomas's class are engaged in learning the minute they cross the threshold into her classroom; they are aware of her high expectations. One former student described Dr. Thomas's classroom as one with hands-on instruction and a clear learning goal. Another former student's eyes lit up as she referenced the first time that she and her classmates saw the new fitness room.
Dr. Thomas has a profoundly positive impact on students every day. Her leadership extends beyond the classroom. She is a strong advocate for school-community partnerships that benefit students academically, socially, and emotionally. Some words of wisdom that Dr. Thomas shares with new teachers are for them to learn their community so that they can understand their students. Dr. Thomas has said, "Every parent sends us the very best they have, and it is our responsibility to honor that trust. Even on days when it may feel challenging, let's strive to uplift our students and find something positive within them-whether it's a thoughtful response, a helping hand, or simply showing up with their book bag. Every small step matters, and every child deserves to feel valued."
"Dr. Joeva Thomas is a true LifeChanger, making a positive impact in the lives of others daily," said Fant.
