Mr. Weatherspoon has dedicated to teaching students at Lake Worth High School, not only about the importance of music, but about the history of music and how it changes others' lives. He has helped many students through his love of music, and he has become a family member to them. He has been teaching music for over 27 years. During that time, he has won awards and performed with many different groups, traveling across the United States to spread the sound of music to others.
John Weatherspoon has always been very kind, caring and at the same time disciplined and a true leader. His students reflect these qualities in him. I didn’t spend much time as his student but am so grateful I had the honor of being in his class. He shapes impressionable students into responsible adults that shine ! He runs a wonderful program and continues to help improve LWH. He creates opportunities for students that they otherwise may not ever get to experience. I will never forget standing on stage at Candlelight with Whoopi Goldberg. A true once in a lifetime opportunity!! Thank you Mr. Weatherspoon for all you do and continue to do for your students. I was lucky enough to have met Mr. Weatherspoon my freshman year of high school back in 2011. He is an amazing teacher and friend. He’s patient and kind and treats his students like they’re his own kids. When life at home was hard for me, he would be the shoulder I cried on. He’s supportive, loving and caring. He’s more then just a teacher to his students. He’s a father figure, a role model and an amazing leader and person. His passion for music has helped all of his students throughout the years and continues to do so to this day. I am so blessed and grateful to have him in my life cause although it’s been 5 years since I’ve graduated I know I can text/call him for anything and everything at any point and he’d be there. I have know Mr. Weatherspoon since 2005 when I started working at LakeWorth High. I remember him making sure a positive impression on me; the student-teacher rapport is unbelievable. The way he speaks to students that helps them understand and put things into perspective. Mr. Weatherspoon has been an amazing super role model for countless studernts throughout his 27 years as a teacher. He posibive attitude towards music, life and God is so contagious. I have witnessed numerous students mature and develop into “musicians” in throughout their four years of high school, being groomed by non-other than John Weatherspoon. I remember year after year, John would do all sorts of fun-raisers to offer his students an opportunity to perform outside of our school; Kravis Center, Disney, Univesal, New Your City, etc.... To this day, in my eyes, Mr. Weatherspoon is some sort of super hero. He is the most dedicated father, most devoted husband, most inspirring professional and selfless friend. I have watched how formers students continuously come back, message him, call him, etc.. to ask for professioanl advice as well as personal. He is always there to help a helping hand regardless of how needs it. I am truly blessed to call John Weatherspoon, my friend.
I was in my senior year (class of 93) at LWHS when John Weatherspoon first came to our school. Everyone was sorry to see the old chorus teacher leave. We didn't know what to expect from this "outsider". But very quickly we learned about each other and he gained our respect and love. His passion for music and caring about others has stayed with me through the years. And I still communicate with him to this day. I can definitely say that Mr. Weatherspoon had a big impact on me in the one year I spent being a part of the greatest high school Chorus program there is. .Lake Worth still Rules and so does Mr. Weatherspoon!
I have known John Weatherspoon in many capacities for over 20 years. Throughout this time, I have gained a high level of respect for him as a musician, conductor, teacher, leader and friend. I have had the privilege of watching Mr. Weatherspoon interact with students in the classroom and as a chaperone on field trips, as my daughter and my son were both dedicated members of his choral program. As an educator, John teaches his students excellence in music, as well as valuable life lessons and civic responsibility. I have seen firsthand the personal investment he makes in his students, challenging them to strive for excellence both in the choral arts and in making good life choices. And John's impact does not end in the classroom. In 2012, he co-founded a non-profit choral organization, Espressivo, of which he is the Artistic Director. As a board member and singer in Espressivo, I sat under the direction of John’s conducting and was consistently amazed by his ability to make a piece of music come to life. As a conductor, John teaches that choral music is not just about singing notes on a page, but should be expressed from the heart to create meaning for the performer and audience. John has had an incredible impact on the Choral Arts in Palm Beach County over the past 28 years. He is passionate about Music Education, and his teaching has affected both students and adults throughout the county. Thank you, John, for using your passion and gifts to change lives through music!
I never had the privilege of being a student or co-worker of John Weatherspoon; however, as the President of the Lake Worth High School Alumni Foundation I have heard countless stories of the significant impact he has had on former students' lives. Some stories revolve around their love of music and the arts because of him. Usually, after a giant smile of recognition and a warm hug they share the life lessons taught by him. He may have given just the right amount of discipline or built their confidence to challenge them. As a former educator, I know those moments for him are rewarding, but the honor of being named a Life Changer would also be shared by his many students, current and past. It would be fitting that the year he was named a finalist - in the top ten in the Nation - as the Grammy Music Educator of 2019 that he would receive the Life Changer award. Because, indeed, he is a Life Changer.
Wow! What can I say? I’m truly thankful for Mr. Weatherspoon. I was a student in his chorus class since 2004 until I graduated in 2008. I had the best of times in his class. He introduced many students, like myself to the magic of music. Thanks to him, I don’t think I can get by without music. Old school music too.

Six years ago, when I was brand new to teaching high school, he was one of the first colleagues to welcome me with open arms, literally. At graduation that year, I had the pleasure of hearing our chorus sing and was completely amazed by their talent and confidence. John's kindness and dedication are contagious, but his skill as an educator is undeniable. I am honored to nominate John Weatherspoon as a Lifechanger of the Year. I have known Mr. Weatherspoon for over fifteen years and he has remained dedicated to the students at Lake Worth High School. There isn't very many words to fully express the effect of one good teacher on not only each individual student, but the community as a whole. Mr Weatherspoon's dedication to his craft is admirable and dare I say everlasting -- there is no doubt in my mind that he's left a footprint in South Florida's music community. As John Weatherspoon’s middle school choral teacher I had the opportunity to work with John before his sweet little voice began to change. I knew I needed to entice him to keep him singing through those impressionable years of change so that he would continue singing into high school. Oh boy...he kept changing registers...alto one week, baritone the next! (I called it “barely tone”). Once he settled in where he was comfortable, off we had business with honor choirs, solo and ensemble festivals, musicals, state festivals, etc.
John’s family was very supportive even though it wasn’t always easy. His dedication, gumption, and drive paid off, as these strong traits have enhanced John to be the leader he has become today and so deserving of this distinctive award. Of course being nominated for the Grammies Music Educator Award doesn’t hurt!! Way to go John.

Mr. Weatherspoon is one of the most dedicated and caring educators at Lake Worth High School. He has been my teacher, mentor, and colleague. As a teacher, he shared his heart with me. I remembered sharing with him as a student that my parents would not allow me to travel for a chorus performance (Haitian parents). He took time to speak with them and assured them that he would be a protector to all his students (taped all students' doors during the night). "Hero" by Mariah Carey was the first time that I stood in front of an audience and sang a solo. Mr. Weatherspoon provided me with the confidence to share my voice. As a mentor, he counseled me "be confident in your abilities and reach for the stars." As a colleague, he inspired me to teach with my heart and continue to have joy.
Not just a leader in the performing arts department at Lake Worth Community High School, but for the community as well. Mr. Weatherspoon has passed on his passion for art and music to the young people he has taught. He also has worked diligently for his students and our school. Easily, one of the most influential teachers I have ever had. I owe so much to Mr. Weatherspoon for encouraging and inspiring me to become the man that I am today. Upon enter enter his classroom in 1997, I was a shy kid that had never sung a note in front of anyone. However, by the time I graduated, I was singing lead parts, section leader, I qualified for All-State, and I was even appointed president of the choir my senior year. I had never imagined accomplishing any of those things. Mr. Weatherspoon helped to transform me not just as a musician, but as a man. He pushed me to achieve greater and be a leader, even when I didn't feel I had it in me. He never doubted me and always believed I could do anything, if I worked hard enough. He was always open and willing to take the extra time to work with me so I could be the best I could be. The confidence Mr. Weatherspoon instilled in me has carried thus far, and will continue for the rest of my life. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of the Lifechanger of The Year Award. My encounter with Mr. Weatherspoon was life-altering, and I will forever be grateful for him teaching me to be a better musician and person. A true role-model!

Where do i begin. In 2000 i entered my freshman year of highschool at lake worth high. I was small, very shy, and quiet, yet chorus class was a place for me to open up, discover myself, and use my voice in beautiful ways. Mr. Weatherspoon was very influential during those critical years of growing into a young adult. Beyond making my classmates and i superior choir singers he instilled discipline,confidence, and pride in us to be the best we can be beyond our highschool years. He provided me a place of comfort, and place of pure enjoyment. Chorus was the best memories i have of those years and i owe that to Mr. Weatherspoon. Im overwhelmed with joy that he has continued to provide the same to the students after me. Continue to do you Mr. Weatherspoon. Mr. Weatherspoon is everything from an inspiration to a home! I learned so much more from him than just how to enhance my voice! He was a continued force in my High School life providing confidence, comfort and strong morals. He always had an open door to talk and a safe place to be when you had those hard days everyone does in High School. He helped me to see more in myself and encouraged me to be a better person/role model, holding myself to higher standards than the rest. I found so much confidence from his teaching and reaching for the stars with solos and other musical opportunities like our school sports games and graduation singing the national anthem! It has been over ten years since those days and I still carry this confidence with me along with all of the life lessons learned from him! Thank you always, with love!
My freshman year of high school, I was welcomed with open arms into Advanced Chorus taught by Mr. John Weatherspoon. In that very moment, I didn’t realize how much of an impact he would truly make in my life. When I first stepped into his class I was a shy girl who didn’t know how to read choir music and just wanted to blend in the back. Through the years, Mr. Weatherspoon taught me how to be determined, hard-working, passionate about the things I wanted in life, and taught me what means to truly be a great leader. Mr. Weatherspoon always told us we were capable of so much more than we thought, and he held us to that very standard. He pushed me beyond all the limits I thought I could endure and made me a stronger person because of it. I went from a timid girl who wanted to blend in the background to the president of chorus, and singing solos. Now I am a sophomore in college, and I still to this day carry all the lessons I have learned in Mr. Weatherspoon’s class, and will continue them through the the rest of my life.
Sadly, i could only be in Mr. Weatherspoon’s class 2/4 of my high school years because i changed schools. Mr. Weatherspoon is the best. Just an absolutely fantastic dude. ??
John Weatherspoon always sees the full potential of his students even when they don’t see it themselves. When I was in his chorus, he pushed my classmates and I to do greater than we ever thought we could and he showed us our worth as both singers and people. His passion in what he does shows every day and it rubs off on everyone around him in the best way. Of course, he teaches how to sing, read music, and put on a show, and all of that is amazing. But he also teaches things that will stick with his students in every context for the rest of their lives, like respect, perseverance, and responsibility. Throughout my four years at Lake Worth High School, his class was the only class I ever looked forward to. His energy is radiant, if you ever get to meet Mr.Weatherspoon you will see what I am talking about. Being chorus isn’t just about singing, it's about building valuable life skills while trying to sing. Mr.Weatherspoon made us all feel like family, not one left out. He gave us all equal love and there isn’t another teacher that gave that to me. He kept up with us, from grades, to attendance, to family issues, even to college applications. Mr.Weatherspoon is a selfless person, he tried to do everything he could for us. I am so greatful I got to meet an amazing person like him, and I do believe he will continue to change many lives as he did mine.
Mr. Weathrerspoon is truly one of the most caring, kind, selfless, passionate, and generous people I know. Though he was not my personal teacher, he has always been there for me and my fellow students. In the Seminole Ridge Choir's time of need, he was there for us. When Mr. Rainer, my choir director, was hospitalized, Mr. Weatherspoon did not hesitate to reach out to the faculty at Seminole Ridge and the student leaders in choir to help us during this hard time. With only a few days notice, he stepped up to conduct our annual holiday concert, and he encouraged us to have a positive attitude. Since Mr. Rainer's passing, he has adopted my friends and I as his own. He continues to reach out to us even after our graduation, and he has provided me with advice in my professional career endeavors. I can without a doubt say that Mr. Weatherspoon deserves any award he is offered. There are not enough "thank yous" I can give to him for doing no more than being himself; a nurturing, determined, and beautiful human being. He is an inspiration to me as a future music educator, and I can't wait to be a teacher like him.

Mr. Weatherspoon has shaped my outlook on music and life since the very first time I stepped into his classroom my freshmen year of high school. I, at first wasn’t very receiving of being in chorus, my freshmen year, cause I was a shy person and I hated singing in front of people. But as I was in his class, for the four years I was in high school, he taught me more than I could ever imagine, and not only about music but about life. Mr. Weatherspoon showed me a type of respect that I didn’t generally get from most adults going through puberty or high school and that said a lot about his character overall. He pushed me to never doubt myself and he awakened a renowned love for music I never thought I had. He not only taught me the value of music, or how to read music notes but he also taught me about the value of life and what it has to offer when you have the right kind of mindset. I can honestly say if I dropped out of the class in high school, when I wanted to, I personally wouldn’t know where I would be in this present day because it was Mr. Weatherspoon that gave me the support, encouragement, work ethic, wisdom, and knowledge that I have today that has helped me delegate myself in a certain manner of professionalism and growing up and going through puberty in high school he was like that fatherly brotherly figure I never had because of my family situation that I needed overall. And I’m honestly blessed and thankful for the impact that John has had in my life as a teacher and mentor of the arts.
John Weatherspoon has been a true inspiration to me. During the 18 years that I have known him, he has directed my high school choir, sang along side me during my time receiving a degree at Florida Atlantic University in voice, and directed the Espressivo choir in which I sang soprano for in my professional career after I graduated college. I have seen him make a difference in the lives of hundreds upon hundreds of students AND adults! He will always be on my list of people who inspired me professionally, artistically, and personally because of the great human being he is. It is with great pleasure that I nominate John Weatherspoon for life changer of the year. Mr. Weatherspoon was my chorus teacher from 1991 to 1994. But he was far more than that. He was a mentor, champion, life coach, and I genuinely believe a lifesaver.
When I started at Lake Worth high school in 1991, I was at a pivotal point in my life. I had experienced multiple family tragedies and personal crises with in the last two years of my life. I was disengaged and angry. Mr. Weatherspoon used his love of music to draw me in, capture my trust, and inspire me to be excited about life again. Throughout my time and his program, he continued to serve as a mentor to me, coaching me and both my musical talent as well as helping me find my direction in life.
25 years later, I am the principal of an amazing school in Palm Beach County, who served as a middle school teacher, assistant principal, and principal in Atlanta for 16 years. During my 20 years as an educator, I am proud to say that I have impacted the lives of thousands of children. And many of my toughest moments of my career, I have followed the model that was set forth for me: to love my students as if they were my own, to guide them towards a better life, and to hold them to a higher expectation than they hold themselves.
Not only has Mr. Weatherspoon impacted the lives of every student he has come into contact with, but he has impacted the lives of those that they will impact for the remainder of their life.

I met Mr. Weatherspoon at a conference a few years ago. We immediately connected as we shared our joys and burdens in our field. It was apparent that Mr. Weatherspoon is a passionate teacher. He loves his students, he challenges them, and he cares about them as people.
As he told me stories I knew he was special. As a colleague I have gone to him for ideas and encouragement. He always is uplifting and makes a a better person. Our field is so fortunate to have him as an example of excellence.
Mr. Weatherspoon is the most supportive, dedicated, and genuine person I know. From the moment I met him freshman year, I knew exactly what was expected of me and the importance of my role in the choir. He made me feel like even though I was one voice in the choir, my voice mattered. He pushed me to be better than I was because he believed in me and in turn I learned how to truly believe in myself. I gained so much confidence in myself as a person through the 4 years under his Direction. I learned that I was a leader and managed to re-instate the Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter at Lake Worth High School in 2006-2007. Something I would never have had the courage to do prior to his guidance and encouragement. Then, I was elected President of said chapter. It was then that I realized whatever I was going to do in life, I wanted to lead and be an example for other people. The way he had lead and been an example for his students. I truly believe that Mr. Weatherspoons direction in music helped me in multiple ways that far surpass the years I spent in his choir in high school. His passion for music is contagious and makes you remember why you fell in love with music to begin with. He stands by his convictions and encourages his students to be better humans, and strive to improve themselves as individuals and as members of their community. He taught us to give back to the community whenever we can, and to always stay humble. He taught us that our dreams are never too big and that we can achieve whatever we set our minds to. He has forever changed my life for the better, and I will forever be blessed to know him as a Director, friend and valued member of the church and our community! He truly is the most qualified for this award.
John Wayne Weatherspoon, is one of those teachers that makes an impression on ever student that he encounters. Chorus was my stress relief in H.S. and a place where I knew everyone was welcomed with no judgement. He taught us by setting goals we can achieve anything. I’m honored to be one of his many students. With Mr. Weatherspoon’s dedication to enriching his student’s lives through music I can’t imagine anyone else less deserving of this award. With the true winners being the future of the LWHS Trojan Pride Chorus.
As a former student of Mr.Weatherspoon, I’m sure I am speaking for many when I say he is the definition of life changer. Throughout my musical career from elementary school to now, my Freshman year in college, a reoccurring question is “Who’s your musical inspiration?” I’ve responded with common artists but more recently I’ve responded with “My chorus teacher, John Weatherspoon”. However, I don’t only consider him a musical inspiration, he’s an inspiration for my life in general. He’s taught me selflessness, humbleness, and graciousness. He’s also given me confidence and taught me to passionately achieve my dreams without hesitation. He’s connected me with people that I know i’ll be in contact with for life.I don’t think there’s been anyone in my life who’s been as inspiring to me as Mr.Weatherspoon.
John has impacted my life in so many ways. He has supported me in my choices to live through music. Starting as a high school student even though he wasn’t the choral Director at my school he was encouraging and loving. In college he was supportive and so full of love and compassion. Now as a music educator myself he serves as a mentor, and a constant reminder I have faith in my Feild for his passion and love for music af his students is overwhelming. As a current singer in his ensemble he shows constent support for his singers, he is encouraging and makes us each feel important, valued and knowledgeable. He is an icreadible leader. Always leading from the group as a member and friend. I can not say enough wonderful things about John Weatherspoon. He is such a light in this world. Anyone who knows him can say he changes lives everywhere he goes.
Class of 96:
As a teenager John greatly impacted my life. He inspired me to want to do more with my life. His passion for music was infectious. He challenged us to learn music that wasn’t always the easiest selection and in doing so showed us that hard work pays off. Being around him made me want to become a better singer and person. He truly cared about each and every one of his students.
John Weatherspoon has been an outstanding and very effective teacher of music and choral for many years. He was recently one of the 10 finalists for a Grammy Award. His dedication and love of music and his students is consistent and earnest. His students share their talents with the local community throughout the year by performing before numerous Assisted Living facilities; participating in the local holiday celebrations and at invitational events. His choral students consistently earn awards at the local and state level.
John instills not only a love of music and singing but a strong sense of personal responsibility and integrity. His expectations of his students reaches beyond the classroom and helps them to be successful students and young adults. He expects positive behavior and collaboration whenever his students meet, both in the classroom and when performing outside the school. Working with many students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds presents a challenge that is often overlooked because of the success that he and his students achieve. Read the many other comments and you will understand the impact that he has made throughout the course of his teaching career.
I have known Mr. Weatherspoon for over ten years, having worked with him at Lake Worth High School while I was the School Resource Officer there. In the nine years that I served on campus there has been numerous staff turnovers...maybe way too much. The one constant face that has been there all those years, and many before I even arrived, was John Weatherspoon. His longevity at that school is a true testament to his profound love and caring for his students, and the true belief that music can and has made tremendous impacts on people’s lives. It expresses oneself without barriers, and Spoons measured and calculated guidance into that world, and the fascination it brings to his kids, makes him the one true staple of an honorable teacher. In other words, he can’t be touched! When he’s done, his legacy will go on and live through his countless students.
As a chorus parent for four years I was able to watch the impact and influence Mr Weatherspoon provides each of his students. He teaches students not only music, but teamwork, dedication, confidence and appreciation for the differences of other. He teaches life lessons necessary to thrive is today's society. He expects much of his students but because of his sincere desire to see them succeed in all they hope to accomplish his students crave his mentorship. I learned much as well during those times I was able and fortunate enough to chaperone chorus trips and events. I was able to experience and see first hand the growth and character building of each of his students. Mr Weatherspoon is still part of our family and will always have our respect and love.
I am not sure even where to begin, because Mr. Weatherspoon has been such a positive influence in my life and his impact has ripple beyond my adolescent years. I met John in an all women chorus by first year of high school and can still recall remember his stern speech about the high expectations he had for the members of his choir. At the beginning, I was a little intimidated (after all he is a Marine) but it quickly faded as I got to know Mr. Weatherspoon better. He could state stern expectations and be someone who equally enjoyed jokes and living life to the fullest. John always challenged myself and my peers to think critically and to help ourselves. These were skills I did not appreciate fully into my later adult years when you realize how much you have to advocate for yourself in life. John is the epitome of a life changer that has dedicated his life to serving the Lake Worth community that is often overlooked and underserved. He pours his love and attention to the young men and women who come from predominantly lower income and minority majority background. As a professional or color, John further serves as an important role model to all of his students, but especially to his students of color, and shows what can happen when you apply yourself and pursue your dreams. The Lake Worth community has a lot of students whose family have recently transitioned to America or have to deal with life’s realities early on. However, this showcases the importance of John in these student lives. He encourages his students to be leaders in the world and gives them an actual stage to launch their hopes and dreams. John’s passion for music is contagious, he is able to teach valuable life lessons in the movements of the music. The students in his 25+ years teaching career have been enriched with his presence. Now into my adult years and beyond my high school years, I look to John as a mentor and a friend who still is a source of wisdom and encouragement. You have to look no further to John W. Weatherspoon to find the life changer of year and if you overlook him for this award you will be sorely remiss.
As the Director of Bands at Lake Worth High School, I had the privilege of working beside Johm Weatherspoon, the school’s Choir Director, for several years. John is a gifted choir director, singer and musician. I have also played many shows as an orchestra member with John performing as a soloist. For more than two decades I have observed John in musical, educational, professional and social settings and what I have seen is a man who is relentlessly committed and steadfast, consistently positive, and driven by a passion for the arts and by love for God, music, people, and especially his students. John is a committed husband and father and has raised a wonderful family in these times when families are increasingly disfunctional. I have observed John working with large choral groups in the finest performing arts centers in our area and he is a masterful conductor. One day I said to him, “John, you could teach anywhere you want. Why do you stay at an inner-city school with so many challenges when you could be teaching at a school of the arts or a university?” John said, very simply “Because this is my mission. This is where I am supposed to be.” That’s John Weatherspoon; former United States Marine, father, educator and musician, relentlessly focused on his mission.
I have known John Weatherspoon for the past 28 years as a leader in our community as the Choral Director for Lake Worth High School. As the Activities Director for Arden Courts Memory Care Community for seniors with Alzheimer's disease and dementia, I have seen many Choral Directors over the last 30 years and can honestly tell you that John is a truly special man. He exemplifies commitment, excellence, compassion, and genuinely loves his students which is extremely evident in the way he interacts with them. John's passion for music and to serving his community not only as a teacher but also with his church is a quality that should be recognized and honored. He is a positive role model who encourages people to be giving, motivated, and diligent. He demonstrates selflessness by showing concern for others and volunteering his time and talent. He has impacted the lives of so many and brought much joy to my residents, families, and staff. Thank you for all you do!!!
John is my brother and he can tell you that growing up with 6 other siblings was not always easy. But one of the most of many wonderful memories I have of John is singing songs and dancing. Music has always been his passion and it’s wonderful to see his dreams come to pass... what a wonderful legacy you are living not only with your children but other people both young and old as well. Love you brother...
This man is phenomenal! Everyone who comes in contact with him has been inspired by his love and dedication to his music,his job(chorus director at Lake Worth High School),his students(past and present),his family, his church, and his country. He is a life changer and an inspiration!
This man is a genius. He has taken his God given talents and used them to inspire, motivate and better the lives of so many students over the years through music. When you can get children to come to school, love coming to school, love learning, and go on to college to become teachers themselves so that they can inspire and empower other children to come to school, love school, love learning, and go on to college to become prominent individuals in society, then you are definetly a LIfe-Changer. This is what Mr. Weatherspoon does on a daily basis at Lake Worth High School in West Palm Beach Florida. He is a motivator, an encourager, and a role model for his children as well as other children. He's very passionate about the arts and when he sings, you see and hear his passion for music. He challenges his students to be their best and he doesn't accept excuses. He has away of pulling beauty out of ashes. Students this day and age really don't care how much you know, until they know that you actually care about them. Because Mr. Weatherspoon cares so much for his students, it is reflected in their behavior both in the classroom and around campus and their commitment to their education. His ability to inspire and motivate students goes beyond his classroom as he has touched the lives of students around the country. I can't think of anyone more deserving of the Life-Changers Award than my best friend Mr. John Weatherspoon.
John Weatherspoon is one of the most inspiring individuals you will ever meet. He is an incredible educator, father, role model and friend. He leaves a lasting impression on all who he comes in contact with. I’m honored to call him my friend and to be able to be impacted by his life and example every single week. It would be hard to find someone who deserves this more than John. He loves his students and would do anything to see them succeed. Believe me, he’s incredibly talented and could be doing anything else with his gifts but he chooses to pour into the lives of young men and women who need it.
Mr. Weatherspoon was one of the most supportive, encouraging, passionate and inspirational directors I've ever had the pleasure to work with. I always appreciated how willing he was to work with me and my schedule, allowing me the ability to join in the choir despite my other extracurricular activities. My time singing with him was very rewarding. He's definitely been a lifechanger to many, many people over his years! He certainly deserves this honor.
John has a heart of gold. He is a wonderful husband and father and loves his family dearly. He goes above and beyond what is expected/required of him for his students. John takes an interest in his students and wants to see ALL of them succeed. He is such an inspiration not only to his students but everyone around him. Clearly one of the most inspirational, caring and loving people I have had the pleasure of knowing.
When I joined Mr. Weatherspoon's chorus in 1998, I was a painfully shy 14-year-old girl with some confidence issues. Mr. Weatherspoon created an atmosphere where I felt accepted, even special. It wasn't just me, I watched as he interacted with my classmates. He cared about each one. He connected personally with each one. He wasn't afraid to get into people's business and challenge their choices. He wanted the best for us and he'd call us out when we were doing something that was bad for us. He loved us and we knew it. I remember my senior year, Mr. Weatherspoon pulled aside each senior one by one. When it was my turn, he told me what he believed I was capable of. He told me what he saw in me. It's been 16 years, I won't share what he said but I will say that his words have stayed with me. They've been a challenge to me and a self-fulfilling prophecy. I haven't lived up to them but I still have time. I wasn't so special. It wasn't only me. Somehow Mr. Weatherspoon has been able to reach so many of his students in deeply personal ways. He has inspired us. Chorus was family, it was fun. It was a creative experience that stirred my soul and made me feel connected to music in a way that I haven't experienced since. One of the hardest things about leaving high school was leaving chorus. I missed it so much it hurt. I didn't have to miss Mr. Weatherspoon though. I could drop in to the chorus room anytime and he was always happy to see me. His students did this often, even when I was in chorus. I no longer live in South Florida but I can still reach out to him at any time and he is always warm and happy to hear from me. I thank God for him. I thank God for his influence as my teacher and the example of his family. I also met my husband in chorus. So, chorus has definitely impacted my entire life. God bless you Mr. Weatherspoon (and Mrs. Weatherspoon who has sacrificed her time with her husband so she could share him with us). Mike and I love you!
John and I were undergraduate classmates. His genuine kindness toward everyone he encountered was noticed. He was always there to help a friend no matter the hour. Who he is runs off on you. He has heart! True heart!
Mr. Weatherspoon, the most influential person to touch my life, helped cultivate talent that I didn’t know I had. He challenged me to find my confidence and inspired me to push my limits. He taught me to set a goal, work hard to reach it, stay positive in times of doubt and somehow managed to do this type of life shaping for SO many others as well. The songs and harmonies our chorus shared in real time was a beautiful sound. But also symbolic of the blending, unifying, experience we were a part of... we learned so much more than the technical components of music. We learned life lessons. Mr. Weatherspoon taught us how to be better people as individuals, and to build a stronger community being part of a group.
I graduated from Lake Worth High School in 2009. Though I was not a student of Mr. Weatherspoon's, I was usually just next door in the band room. It was clear that he had high expectations of his students while simultaneously supporting and encouraging them to meet and exceed those expectations. He was one of those teachers who cared about his students and even those who weren't his students. Mr. Weatherspoon is indeed someone I will never forget for his care, compassion, and love for his subject and his students learning and growth.

I was a proud music student of both Chorus and Band. He helped me embrace that. We traveled together after I graduated and he became an icon in many lives. He will always be a mark in your life if you meet him. He will always bring happiness to you and music. And most of all bring soul to your memories! Look back, remember, learn and be amazing! That's what music does. But the amazing people behind music...They make it UNBELIEVABLE.
THATS WHAT HE DOES
Hands down the teacher that has had the most profound impact on my life. I am now a music teacher myself and would not have been inspired to do so if it had not been for this man, John weatherspoon. He showed me what it look like to be a father, a teacher, and a man. If any person deserves this award this man does.
I count myself lucky to have had Mr. Weatherspoon as my chorus teacher in so many ways. The chorus was a family that almost seemed to exist outside of the rest of highschool, it was a safe space that came with it a feeling of warmth and belonging. While Mr. Weatherspoon would teach us how to sing and read music, in truth he was also an educator in life; showing by example what it meant to be a person of your word, to stand by your commitments in life and to family, the importance of giving your absolute best, the magnitude effect of what it is to be an encourager and how to be the best kind of human...he was a mentor to many of us. Even after leaving the classroom walls he remains to still be there for his students celebrating life's milestones no matter how many years pass, and after my mother passed away a few years ago Mr. Weatherspoon was there and even got up and spoke on my mother's behalf. He shows up for people and I think the ripple effect of that alone has reached countless lives. Once a student of Mr. Weatherspoon's always a student, welcomed back like the most important person he has seen all day! You rock Mr. Weatherspoon and thank you for all your years of teaching!
John Weatherspoon was an excellent teacher, and he cares about every single one of his students, even after we graduate. He is a rare breed.
John is an awesome music educator who has dedicated his life to inspiring young musicians to develop their talents and become better people in the process.
Mr. Weatherspoon to this day calls me Madam morning President. I was his first chorus president at LWHS. Mr. Weatherspoon always challenged us to give our best and believe we could do anything. I am forever thankful for his commitment and high expectations he models to all his students.
Where do I start? I will forever be grateful to Mr Weatherspoon for making my high school years one of the most memorable times of my life. I had the honor of being his student from 1994-1998. You will not find a more devoted and caring teacher (person). He truly have his students best interest at heart. He makes you want to strive for better. Everytime I would stand in front of a classroom, I would ask myself what would JW do. So long after high school he continues to be an inspiration and he still want to be sure that all his students (past and present) are doing well in their lives.
It has been an honor to have Mr. Weatherspoon as a teacher and mentor. I remember my first day of high school, I walked into his classroom full of nerves. He did not hesitate to welcome me into his classroom like his own or like I had been there for years. From that very moment on, who knew I would be privileged to be apart of such an inspiring and motivating program. He never fails to teach us about not only music, but life itself. Everyday of class we learn something new and everyday I appreciate his dedication more and more. My life changed the moment I joined choir because I became part of a family full of every type of person united by music. Thank you for sharing and devoting your passion to the world.
John Weatherspoon truly exemplifies commitment, excellence, perseverance, and passion. I have known John for over twenty years and in that time I have seen John serve endlessly in church music events and in so many volunteer positions. His passion for excellence in music education and performance greatly compares to his passion and commitment to people. I have served with him in church vocal capacities and now have the privilege of serving under him in Espressivo. A few years ago, I had a pulmonary embolism and had little breath to get to the end of a sentence during my college lectures. I did not think I’d be able to sing again. John encouraged me to keep working on my breathing exercises and I eventually would see progress. Now I am singing daily again, am a member of Espressivo, and can engage in my passion. John is the type of person who doesn’t give up on someone. And he encourages us to not give up on our own talents. Thanks, John, for your loving attention to the music system, to Espressivo, to church commitments, and to your fellow human. God has truly blessed us with you.
Where do I start? Honestly one of the best teachers to ever teach! He was tough but like a dad who’d like to see his children do nothing but succeed. Mr weatherspoon has embedded so much knowledge in me but not just music, life in general and I’m so glad I got to enjoy 4 years with him in high school. continue being the best man that you are! ??

MR WEATHERSPOON WAS/IS SUPER COOL PERSON AND HE LOVES TO BE A POSITIVE AND FIRM INFLUENCE IN HIS STUDENTS LIVE. NOT JUST IN THE CHORUS ROOM! THE SCHOOL TRIPS WERE ALWAYS FUN, THE PERFORMANCES, AND BECAUSE OF MR WEATHERSPOON I WAS ABLE TO PERFORM IN THE DISNEY CANDLELIGHT PROCESSIONAL A FEW YEARS AND WAS ONE OF MY BEST YOUNGER YEAR MEMORIES. Mr. Weatherspoon is one the greatest instructors I’ve ever had in my life. His generosity and passion for music is endless. He is our biggest supporter and pushes every single student to their highest potential. After high school and college, I have become a professional singer and it’s in large part because of Mr. Weatherspoon’s teachings and his dedication. Lake Worth High is lucky to have had an incredible instructor like him for all these years.
John Weatherspoon was my chorus teacher during my high school years, 1996-2000. He was more than a teacher. He was a mentor. A friend. A father figure. High school can be a trying time for teenagers. But, his class was the highlight of my day, and my 4 years of high school. Mr. Weatherspoon has changed so many lives in his years at Lake Worth High School. He is deserving of this award and so much more.
John Weatherspoon helped make me the musician and human being I am today. I am a full time professional singer and would never have been inspired or confident enough to pursue my dreams had it not been for John. He always provided his choruses with ample performing opportunities (concerts, hospitals, fairs, competitions, tours, ACDA and All-state), and he taught us what it took to learn and prepare for these exciting, yet challenging opportunities! He helped me learn how to be dedicated, passionate, loyal, be a part of a team, and stay humble. I still to this day do not know the extent of the hours he put in outside of class room time, but I know they must’ve been extensive. He absolutely deserves this award for his dedication to Lake Worth High School, his students, and teaching life skills through music. I know if he won he would put the prize money back into his chorus program and his own continuing education. Thank you for all you have done, John Weatherspoon!
There are not enough words to fully describe how Mr. Weatherspoon has impacted the lives of so many.
It is going on 5 years now since I have graduated from Lake Worth High, but during my time there, I spent each of my 4 years involved in the Chorus.
And each year since I’ve graduated, I’ve come back and done what I could to support this program- because that’s how much I believe in the community that Mr. Weatherspoon has created. He is able to use music to open the eyes of young students, to have confidence, and perseverance- useful in any aspect of life.
So much so, that even his students from 27 years ago still keep in contact.
Not to mention, that this task has NOT been easy. The chorus program has undergone a lot of adversity over the years.
Many of the students at Lake Worth High come from underprivileged homes, and most of the time do not have any background in music. Many times also, the chorus may be the first group/club that a student has ever been involved with.
With this comes the need to learn team work, trust, and reliability.
Moreover, the chorus program (and arts programs in general) usually receive the short end of the stick when it comes to support from the administration, funding, promotion, or even interest at all. (Very different from a “School of the Arts”, but nonetheless important).
This has never deterred Mr. Weatherspoon from giving his all for this program and the students.
Miraculously and deservingly, his students have gone on (time and time again) to receive Superior ratings in competitions, travel out of state to places like Georgia and New York to sing in prestigious concerts, and even been selected to sing on stage with the famous band Foreigner.
But, behind all of these amazing opportunities, the group has learned hard work, fellowship, and community service.
The students have numerous fundraisers every year to make all of these things possible.
And in their time during the holidays, Mr. Weatherspoon arranges caroling in Nursing Homes, and at the South Florida fair for people to enjoy.
As a former LWH Trojan Prode Chorus member, I can honestly say this was one of my favorite things to do. It gave us a sense of a bigger purpose. We learned that it wasn’t just about learning how to sing. It is, and always has been about building a long-lasting community, no matter what our differences might be. It’s about taking responsibility for yourself, while simultaneously helping lift up others.
Mr. Weatherspoon is able to facilitate these valuable life lessons through teaching music.
As I said at the beginning of this “comment”, there are just not enough words to describe this Life Changer. But I am so grateful to know and love him.
John is such a compassionate and dedicated individual. I am so proud of his ability to give of himself to all that he encounters. I’ve seen John truly change and grow as a person for more than 30 years and he imparts all of his knowledge and understanding towards his students with selfishness.
John has been inspiring all around him his whole life. I enjoyed seeing him perform in show choir in high school. He is an all-around classy guy who lives his passion and lifts up everyone around him. Kudos to my dear friend!
I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with John Weatherspoon for just 18 short months.
From the moment that I met him, I knew that John was going to have an incredible impact on me as a person and as an educator.
The impact that John has had on our students, school and community is beyond measure. He pours his heart and soul into teaching and directing his choral ensembles. It is remarkable to see how he can take a group of beginning chorus students and turn them into quality and well-rounded musicians who are passionate about using music to positively impact our school and community. John has changed the lives of so many young people throughout his almost 30 years at Lake Worth High School. He strives to teach life lessons that stick with people forever. The impact that John has on the people around him stretches way further than the music classroom. He changes lives every day. I see it in our students, our colleagues, and in myself.
Wonderful person, great husband, father, brother, and friend. I am sure this character is in everything he does.
John Weatherspoon has played a crucial role in helping me to become the choral educator I am today. After moving to West Palm and coming from an instrumental music education background, John became a friend and mentor to me. He recognized my potential for singing, invited me to sing with his semi-professional choir Espressivo, and refused to let me give up on myself when I wanted to quit after one semester. Throughout the years since that moment, John has continued to be an example to me through his leadership in his school, our district, our church, and Espressivo. Everything he does comes from a place of passion, and he teaches to empower others, not to glorify himself. He has the same high expectations for anyone he is collaborating with. His passion for what he does is infectious and makes people want to push themselves to become what John has seen inside them all along. Learning from him has helped me to have enough confidence to accept a position as a middle school choir director when I have had no other formal vocal training other than the weekly Espressivo rehearsals. In my opinion, John perfectly exemplifies what it means to be a life changer.
John Weatherspoon has been changing many students lives for several years. He continues to show his students just how important music is in each and every person. His passion for showing his students what music can bring to them is evident as they get older and return for performances.
Mr Weatherspoon is a very motivated, generous and compassionate teacher. He sees the potential in you and makes you aware of things you didn’t even know you were capable of. He doesn’t give up on you and won’t let you give up on yourself. When I think of a life changer I most definitely think of Mr Weatherspoon.

John Weatherspoon and I have worked together for 16 yrs as colleagues in the Fine and Performing art department at Lake Worth High School. He is so proud of his program, kids, community and school. Over the years I’ve seen his underfunded program Over Achieve. He has extremely high expectations of his students and year in year out they meet and exceed them. If there is one word I could use to describe him, it would be “ Passion”! John’s passion for teaching and his students are why he is a life changer.
