Music that Describes Maricarmen

Maricarmen Diaz was nominated by her colleague, Melissa Hernandez.

For over 20 years at Good Shepherd Catholic School—19 as a classroom teacher—Ms. Diaz has dedicated her life to educating and serving the community. In every role, she has ensured that every child feels seen, known, and loved, partnering closely with families to support both academic growth and character development.

"When I began my first year as principal, Ms. Diaz immediately stepped into leadership—guiding teams as our school grew rapidly, staying late, and helping drive all-school initiatives with steady hands and a servant's heart," said Hernandez.

Today, she is a true leader in academics and faith formation. Teachers rely on her instructional coaching and calm problem-solving, and parents count on her clear communication, compassion, and follow-through. Ms. Diaz is a student-first advocate. She builds plans that help struggling learners thrive while challenging advanced students to stretch.

Ms. Diaz fosters a culture of dignity, joy, and respect. Students and staff mirror her example. She's an operational anchor; from data chats to safety drills to family engagement, the school runs more smoothly because of her light and spirit. She infuses the school's mission into daily practice, forming both hearts and minds.

"Ms. Diaz gives 100% of herself day in and day out. Her influence is woven into the success of the students, the confidence of the teachers, and the trust of the families. She is, in every sense, a LifeChanger," said Hernandez.

My family and I have known Ms. Diaz for a short while. My son Shai is new to Good Shepard but Ms. Diaz from the initial visit with my son to interview him, she was caring, engaging with him, and wanting to know who he was, what were his interests, what was the experience he was looking to have in a new school. She is a special person. She is always available and present. Her heart is invested in our school, community, and especially the kids. Ms. Diaz is so deserving of this.

I have had the pleasure of working in Ms. Diaz’s classrooms a handful of times and have gotten to see the impact she has on her classroom. Her kids love her and she knows just how to work with each individual one to ensure their success while also helping to establish a special connection with them as a best friend and mentor. More than this, Ms. Diaz is my Titi. Titi is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. She not only helped me learn about the world from when I was little but also helped me learn about my relationship with God and how to be a better person. Titi has and will always have a special place in my heart and that is why she is truly a life changer.

I’ve had the blessing of knowing Maricarmen since we were 15 years old. From the very first day, she was a guiding light for me, and she’s been my best friend ever since our days at Saint Brendan high school. Maricarmen has always been funny, smart, and responsible. We continued our journey together at FIU, where she pursued her true calling in education with determination and heart. Over the years, I’ve witnessed her many achievements, and I can truly say there is no one more deserving of this nomination. She is a beacon of light and positivity wherever she goes, with an unwavering commitment to her faith and her students. Her impact is so evident that my own son chose her as his sponsor for confirmation — a role she embraced with love and grace. Maricarmen is a blessing to know and to love, and I couldn’t be prouder to see her nominated and recognized in this way.
