Kenfis Tormes-Garcia was nominated by Susan Martinez, the parent of a student.

"I met the sixth grade guidance counselor at Wellington Landings Middle School a few days before the school year began.  My son was going to be starting there, and we were not going to be able to attend the school orientations because of medical issues," said Martinez. "I was very concerned that my son, Sam, would not know his way around like the other children and would be at a disadvantage, even if solely based on nerves. I was also worried that I did not have all the necessary paperwork, understand the drop-off and pick-up procedures or know other protocol."

"Mrs. Tormes-Garcia not only responded to my e-mail expressing my concern, but also invited us in for a personal tour," Martinez continued. "Little did I know that she would give us an entire hour of her time showing us everything and sharing stories with Sam. When I expressed with her that I was concerned about the drop off and pick up procedures and entrances, she even took us outside to the parking lot. She was amazing!"

Sam was still recovering from surgery on the first day of school.  During lunch, he fell and hit his leg, which was not related to his incision site.  Mrs. Tormes-Garcia called Martinez to give her the heads up that Sam was fine, but that she'd be getting a call from the school nurse.

"I pack my son's lunch everyday.  While he and another child were goofing around, he dropped his sandwich," Martinez explained. "Kenfis saw that he was upset and went over to ask him why.  He had a lot of other food in his box, but was upset, and she took it upon herself to go and get him a chicken sandwich.  I didn't hear about this for a few days, but when I did, I got in touch with her to thank her. She acted as if it was not a big deal, but it was!

"In the very short time that I have know Kenfis Tormes-Garcia, she has had an amazing impact on my son. I am very greatful for all that she does and feel she deserves recognition," said Martinez.
