Position: Science Teacher

School District: Los Angeles Unified School District
City, State: Los Angeles, CA
Jennifer Mar was nominated by an anonymous colleague.
Mrs. Mar may be a small woman in stature, but she's a giant on the Garfield High School campus. Every year, she is voted as the favorite teacher by the graduating class because she is an outstanding, caring, understanding science teacher.
"In my 23 years teaching at Garfield, I have yet to meet a student who did not enjoy Mrs. Mar's class," said her nominator. "She makes learning fun and demonstrates that she cares for each and every one of her students. She goes out of her way to give her students a positive learning experience."
Mrs. Mar is usually one of the first teachers on campus and one of the last to leave. She tutors her students, has helped her school earn the California Gold Ribbon, and has helped students score high on the State standardized tests. She volunteers many hours of her own time to sponsor CHANCE Club (Garfield's Humanitarian and Environmental awareness club). Mrs. Mar exposes students to environmental issues and helps them get involved in making a difference. She takes them on community and beach clean ups during the weekend, participates in Cancer walks, AIDS Walk Los Angeles, and many more community events. During the holidays, her club also hosts a toy drive to provide for the needy in the Los Angeles community.
