After 22 years of serving the students of Dallas ISD, Ms. Fernandez knows one thing is for certain: when students feel truly immersed in their environment, they engage more deeply in learning. Many of her students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and have limited access to enriching experiences outside of school, so she strives to make her classroom a place where their imaginations can flourish.

For Ms. Fernandez, creating a positive environment goes far beyond decorations; it's about designing a space that sparks curiosity, celebrates diversity, and invites exploration. She wants books to leap off the page, transforming her classroom into a stage for storytelling, a forest for fairy tales, and a lab for literacy discovery. Every corner should invite a question, every wall should hold a lesson, and every student should feel that they belong. When students enter this type of space, they don't just read; they engage. They develop the confidence to take risks, the joy of discovery, and the sense that their voices and stories matter. That's the heart of a positive classroom environment: a place where learning feels like an adventure and every child is inspired to grow as a reader and as a person.

Throughout her teaching career at Dallas ISD, Ms. Fernandez has consistently sought opportunities to grow as an educator and leader. She holds a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. She has served as a member of the Campus Instructional Leadership Team and a grade-level team lead, guiding colleagues toward stronger instructional practices. She has been honored with a nomination for Teacher of the Year. She has extended her impact beyond the classroom by coaching student programs such as E-Sports, Robotics, and Destination Imagination, empowering students to innovate, problem-solve, and collaborate. Ms. Fernandez is Gifted & Talented certified, bilingual certified, and EC–8 certified, equipping her to meet the diverse needs of her learners.

In addition to leading innovative reading instruction, Ms. Fernandez has organized schoolwide literacy events that foster a culture of reading and mentored new educators to strengthen their profession. Each role she has taken on reflects her commitment to creating engaging, challenging, and inspiring learning experiences for all students. Ms. Fernandez has come to understand that the most powerful learning happens when lessons become moments, experiences students remember long after they leave her classroom.
