Position: Dance Teacher
School: Gabriella Charter School 1 - Echo Park
School District: Gabriella Charter Schools
City, State: Los Angeles, CA
Antavius Ellison was nominated Shiaron Climaco, the parent of a student.
When Mr. Ellison joined Gabriella Charter Schools in 2022 as a Dance instructional aide, he brought with him more than choreography. He brought presence, purpose, and the kind of compassion that transforms lives. In just a few short years, he has become the Assistant Director of Dance Education and the Company Director of GCS Company K!ds, serving students across TK–8th grade with an unwavering heart and a deep belief in the healing power of the arts.
He has also become a committed member of both the Instructional Leadership Team and Restorative Justice Design Team. His reach touches every corner of the school through collaboration, creativity, and care. At GCS, a community comprising predominantly Black, Latinx, AAPI, and other culturally diverse students, Mr. Ellison creates spaces where young people feel safe to move, to be, to express, and to grow.
His classroom isn't just a place to learn dance; it's a place to learn about life. It's a sanctuary for transformation. Students who arrive shy or unsure leave feeling empowered. Those who struggle to find their voice in traditional classrooms discover it boldly through movement. As he says, "Dance is the medium, but transformation is the mission."
Mr. Ellison builds confidence from the inside out. He has a gift for seeing the light in every student and reflecting it to them until they believe it, too. Under his leadership, students have performed original works, collaborated across grade levels, and taken brave, creative risks. He has helped expand access to professional arts opportunities, including a pathway to some of the most prestigious performing arts high schools in the country (i.e, LACHSA and Ramón C. Cortines School), where students from GCS are now being accepted and thriving.
Outside of class, Mr. Ellison is often found speaking at donor events, advocating for arts funding and educational access for his students at GCS. As a Big Brother with Big Brother Big Sister Los Angeles, he mentors with the same love and integrity he brings to his school community. And when he's not in the studio, on campus, or attending his own dance classes, you might find him rollerblading along the beach, spending time in connection with nature. It's his way of filling up his cup so he can pour into others from his overflow.
Mr. Ellison also played an essential role during the GCS2 Charter Renewal process, standing as a testament to what's possible when education centers the whole child — body, mind, and spirit. His work reminds us that dance is not only an art form, but a lifeline. It's a way home to oneself.
Raised in a small town in Georgia with no access to formal dance training, his love for movement began by watching music videos and creating routines with friends. He wouldn't step into a formal dance class until his senior year of college, a fact that has shaped his teaching philosophy ever since. He strives to give his students what he didn't have: a space to be free, to explore, and to know they are enough, just as they are.
"Art is humanity's direct connection to the Creator," he often says.
Whether it's through a dance phrase, a classroom conversation, or a quiet moment of encouragement, Mr. Ellison embodies that truth. He leads with grace. He mentors with humility. He uplifts others with every step.
"Antavius Ellison is a LifeChanger. Not just because of what he does, but because of who he is. His presence has shaped the GCS community in ways that will ripple far beyond this moment — into the lives of students, families, and future artists who now believe that their story matters, too," said Climaco.
