Ms. Lawrence creates a positive classroom environment by intentionally designing a space that is warm, welcoming, and emotionally safe, a place where students feel loved, respected, and ready to learn. Understanding that many of her third-grade students come from homes that may not always feel secure or nurturing, she strives to create a consistent and comforting classroom environment. Her classroom is not only a learning space, but students' home for the day, and she treats it with the care and attention it deserves.
Organization plays a key role in the calm, supportive atmosphere Ms. Lawrence fosters. Materials are clearly labeled and always accessible, empowering students to take responsibility for their learning. In third grade, where independence begins to develop, Ms. Lawrence sets students up for success by clearly modeling expectations and providing the necessary tools. Her consistent routines and clear transitions help the classroom run smoothly, allowing students to feel confident and capable.
One of the most impactful things Ms. Lawrence does to shape her classroom culture is the promise she makes to her students: she will never raise her voice. This simple but powerful commitment builds a foundation of trust and safety. The significance of this promise was reflected in end-of-year student letters, where the majority noted it as one of the most essential things future students should know about being in her class. That feedback confirmed for Ms. Lawrence just how deeply her calm, respectful demeanor resonated with her students.
The physical space of her classroom also reflects her nurturing approach. Ms. Lawrence incorporates warm colors, soft lighting, and positive affirmations throughout the room to create a comforting and inspiring environment. Her class is a place where students feel seen, heard, and valued, where laughter, learning, singing, and mutual respect are part of the daily experience.
For over 18 years, Ms. Lawrence has lived by the motto "Work Hard and Be Kind," and it continues to guide everything she does. Her students grow academically and learn the importance of kindness, perseverance, and respect for others and themselves.
