Kara Hunter was nominated anonymously.

Ms. Hunter creates a positive and inclusive classroom environment by fostering a culture rooted in respect, responsibility, and student-centered care. Teaching grades 9–12 in a music-based classroom, she makes it clear from day one that all students are welcome and supported, not just academically, but personally and emotionally.

Two standout features of her classroom are her photo wall and care center, both of which reflect her commitment to building genuine community and trust. The photo wall features printed snapshots of students, their friends, families, and pets, submitted by students throughout the year. She updates it monthly, labeling each photo on the back and saving them in a dedicated photo album for future students to look through. This ever-evolving display helps students feel seen, valued, and connected.

The care center, located discreetly near the door, provides students with access to essential hygiene and self-care items, including deodorant, disposable toothbrushes, menstrual products, hair supplies for all hair types, and even a small sewing kit and lint rollers. Ms. Hunter introduces the care center on the first day of class, emphasizing that any student is welcome to take what they need, no questions asked. She also maintains a stock of school supplies, such as folders, planners, paper, and backpacks, ensuring students are never without the tools they need to succeed.

Because her classroom is a music space, Ms. Hunter opts for flexible seating instead of desks. Students can choose from floor cushions, stools, lap desks, clipboards, and small tables, creating a comfortable and adaptable learning environment. Except for Choir, Ms. Hunter does not assign seats; instead, she trusts her students to uphold class expectations by choosing their own spots and behaving respectfully, regardless of who they sit near.

This approach encourages independence, accountability, and mutual respect, values that her students consistently uphold. Her thoughtful systems and high expectations demonstrate her belief that when students are treated with dignity and care, they thrive, not only as learners, but as members of a supportive and respectful community.

Its honestly amazing to see how Ms. Hunter got this far and she's changed my life by making me feel seen and feel welcome. At north, I always felt like I was walking the halls alone...no friends, no spirit no nothing I felt like I was ready to give in. But when I met Ms. Hunter, it felt like she took all of the loneliness and discourage and tossed it far away! She gave me a reason to want to come to school everyday and to this day I really appreciate all she's done to help me graduate. Thank you Ms. Hunter and I hope this helps you win big!

Being a retired educator, who always thought outside the box to engage students to be life long learners, personally, this is how a classroom should be set up: something that makes the students feel more at ease.

Although I do not know Kara personally, I totally admire the inclusion she is providing for all. Having "incidentals" the kids need available means so much to those who do not have access. Thanks, Kara...you are appreciated and definitely deserve this reward :)

The most awesome teacher ever! She is funny and quotes online memes like us; she's relatable, but she also teaches us lots, and I feel like she helps us with choir and music theory way better than I could've learned elsewhere. She is understanding and will understand if you can't make a class or performance because of an emergency! She doesn't overwork us and lets us chill in her room during lunch. She is very, very cool :)

She absolutely deserves all good things coming her way!!! One of the best teachers I have EVER had! She's kind, respectful, understanding, hilarious, bright, and so life changing! She has given me and so many other students a safe space to be ourselves, and that is worth so much!! She reminded me everyday to love myself as I love others. To want as much as I give. Always one of my biggest supports. Everything shes done for me, she would do for any of her students and friends. We ADORE her!!!!! Keep dreaming so big!!

Kara has always been such a supportive friend and from what I've heard from her and her other friends/coworkers/students is she is just as much of a supportive teacher as well. I always have felt she's amazing at what she does, and feel she's the type of teacher I wish we had growing up. ??
