Creating a positive school environment means more than bulletin boards and lesson plans. It means showing up every day to repair and rebuild trust with students who have been let down by the very system meant to support them. Ms. Schutt teaches at a dropout prevention and recovery school, where many students arrive carrying the weight of disrupted schooling, personal hardships, and a fractured relationship with education. For them, school hasn't always been a safe or welcoming place. Ms. Schutt's mission is to change that.

She starts with relationships — learning names, listening to stories, and celebrating every small win. She creates consistent routines and trauma-informed practices to help students feel safe and seen. She emphasizes emotional regulation, community-building, and mutual respect.
Throughout her career, she has consistently focused on equity, engagement, and student-centered leadership in both traditional and alternative education settings.

Beyond instruction and intervention, students need to know their teachers care about their basic needs. That's where the Care Closet comes in. The Care Closet is stocked with hygiene supplies, deodorant, toothpaste, feminine products, and even clean socks or hoodies. The Care Closet is not only a shelf of items, but something that tells students they matter. It removes barriers to attendance, boosts self-esteem, and creates a learning environment where students can focus on growth instead of survival.

In her school, one of the most urgent and consistent needs is supporting the hygiene and self-care of adolescent and young adult male students. These students often have a history of instability — housing insecurity, inconsistent access to adult support, and a strained relationship with school. For many, meeting basic needs takes precedence over academic engagement.

The school's Care Closet is a critical part of the school environment Ms. Schutt is working to build — one that is restorative, trauma-informed, and focused on rebuilding trust. She has seen firsthand how something as simple as access to basic hygiene supplies can transform a student's sense of dignity and belonging. Providing these items discreetly through the Care Closet helps students re-engage in learning, form stronger relationships with staff, and begin to see school as a place that cares for them holistically — not just academically.

Ms. Schutt's work is not about perfection; it's about persistence. She's rebuilding belief in school, one student at a time. And sometimes, it starts with clean clothes, a kind word, and a quiet place to land.
