Creating a positive first-grade environment is essential for fostering both academic and social-emotional growth. In Ms. Skaggs' classroom, this begins with building strong, trusting relationships. Each student is warmly greeted each morning and encouraged through daily check-ins and community-building activities like morning meetings.

Ms. Skaggs establishes clear, consistent expectations through age-appropriate rules and procedures, many of which are co-created with students to foster ownership and accountability. She embeds positive reinforcement and growth mindset practices into daily routines to celebrate effort, resilience, and improvement. She designs her instruction to be engaging, hands-on, and developmentally appropriate.

Her lessons incorporate music, movement, storytelling, and small-group activities to support diverse learning styles and keep students motivated. She places a strong emphasis on emotional safety and social-emotional learning. Students are explicitly taught skills such as self-regulation, empathy, and problem-solving, and are supported through restorative conversations and calm-down strategies when conflicts arise.

The physical environment of Ms. Skaggs' classroom is warm and welcoming, with organized materials, student work displays, and cozy spaces for quiet reading or reflection. Partnerships with families also play a crucial role in building a supportive learning community. She keeps families informed and involved through regular communication via newsletters and digital platforms, while classroom events and volunteer opportunities invite them to participate in their child's education actively. These intentional practices collectively create a classroom where students feel safe, valued, and excited to learn every day.

At 32 years old, Ms. Skaggs made the life-changing decision to go back to school and pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. With determination and a clear sense of purpose, she enrolled in a four-year education program and, through an accelerated course load and full-time commitment, proudly completed it in just one year. Shortly after, she began teaching first grade, where she has now completed her third successful year in the classroom. This experience has confirmed her passion for early childhood education and shaping young minds.

Driven by her love of learning and a desire to grow professionally, she continued her education. She earned a Master's degree in Educational Technology and Instructional Design, which she completed in only six months. This degree has allowed her to bring innovation and creativity into her classroom through the integration of purposeful digital tools and engaging instructional strategies.

Her journey in education is far from over. She is currently preparing to pursue a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. She believes in lifelong learning, and she is committed to using her knowledge and experiences to support both students and fellow educators in meaningful and impactful ways.
