Emily Salter was nominated by an anonymous colleague.

Mrs. Salter impacts the lives of every student and faculty member in a positive way.  She works extremely hard at supporting her students with positive behavior strategies, as well as supporting her colleagues when they need it the most! She's more than a great listener - she's the positive force needed to combat negativity.

Mrs. Salter listens to students talk about the problems they face and provides sound counsel.  When needed, she gives students the daily necessities that they lack. When a staff member is in need or in the midst of a dire situation, she organizes fundraisers to help alleviate financial or emotional stress.  Just this year, she has taken on an Anti-Bullying Campaign by recruiting and organizing students to create an anti-bullying video to share with the entire school. She has also accompanied students to the district-level student advisory meetings, where students from PGSD meet with school board members and the superintendent.

Singing River Academy is charged with educating some very challenging students, but Mrs. Salter does not let that stop her! She performs art therapy and relaxation sessions to soothe frazzled students. When she was faced with a lack of resources for grief counseling, she wrote a book that facilitates discussion and reflection! Whether a student is on her case load or not, she makes it her priority to serve that person in whatever manner possible.

"Mrs. Salter is more than a counselor - she is a loving, supportive, integral part of our school who goes beyond her job description daily to ensure that the foundation of our school is a safe environment for all students. We would not be SRA without her," said her nominator.

I think Mrs.Salter should win the life changer of the year award because she is smart, nice and funny. She also cares for her students and helps them no matter how big or how small the problem is. Just recently she helped me with a problem and she was so nice and compassionate about it. For example, when I talked about my problem to her and she assured me that it was not my fault and that everything was being handled. And last year there was this one time where a close family member of mine passed away and she loving helped me with my grief. This is why I think Mrs.salter should win the life changer of the year award.

Janie Neeley Posted over a year ago

What do you say about a child born with the unique gift of human connection and compassion? Perhaps her teachers said it best. At our first parent-teacher conference for Emily in kindergarten, teacher expressed her initial concern with her social anxiety, then said, “Emily is the kindest student I have ever taught.” Everyone wants to play with Emily and be her friend! Throughout her school years, parent-teachers began the same way. How impressed educators were, not only by Emily’s quiet gentle kindness, but how she reached out to other students. One teacher said, “In class projects, Emily often chose the unpopular kids to be her team.” She was a LifeChanger even then. Beneath Emily’s reserved exterior is, and always has been a driven, feisty, unrelenting advocate for social justice! She is a voice for the voiceless Emily follows in the footsteps of her grandpa, a school substance abuse counselor. Paralyzed by a drunk driver at 26 years old, he turned tragedy in triumph by helping the very people who put him in a wheelchair. Bitterness was not an option. Rita Pierson said it best in Ted Talks #WorldTeacherDay. “Every child deserves a champion, an adult who will never give up on them. Is this job tough? You betcha! God, you betcha. But it’s not impossible.” I am so proud of our daughter, Emily. She is that champion.

Mrs.Salter has made an impact in my life because when I was a new student everyone looked at me strange and laughed under their breath, the third of school I entered the classroom and boom I was started to get bullied and from that day forward I was bullied for the 4th year again. My mom saw how I was acting and told me what was going on and as soon as she heard what I told her she went straight to the school and told her what was going on . After that I met Mrs.Salter as soon as I saw her she was the sweetest counselor I have ever met, every time I meet her it was like she knew everything. She is a good example for our school motto "chomp," she is very compassionate about others and their feelings, she is a very honest person, If you go into her classroom it's so organized, She is very motivated to help people, and she is a very persevering person even when others or her face problems she is always smiling. Mrs. Emily Salter has a heart of gold! I had the pleasure of meeting her and her family in my late teens ( I am now 34) through church & also going to college with her. She has always had a gentle but strong caring spirit with a contagious smile to those she comes in contact with! Once you meet Emily, your life instantly becomes better because of her positive influence she has on on others. Every act of kindness that she performs to each individual will be remembered and passed on again. Having her be nominated for this award is absolutely amazing and a true testiment of who Mrs. Emily Salter is!! I wish her & her family all the best as she is one in million!

Bunny Tanner Posted over a year ago

I had the opportunity to work closely with Emily for three years at Singing River Academy. We shared some of the same students, as she assisted with behavior supports and I with academics. To say that Emily deserves this award is an understatement. She wears many hats everyday, but she always makes time to care for her students first. She has a way of making each one feel at ease to establish a line of communication so they can speak freely to her. When a child seeks out an adult, it is usually someone with whom they trust. Emily has become that person for so many young people. Emily Salter is one of the most natural counselors. She seems to always know what to say in any situation. She is truly a life changer for so many!

I have known Emily for most of my young adult life (turned 40 this year). What impressed me about Emily is she brings the best qualities of motherhood (hard work, patience, humility, kindness, simplicity, perseverance, tolerance, forgiveness, understanding, friendliness, helpfulness, cheerfulness and curteousness) into her life outside of the home to include the classroom. She is most deserving of this honor and it is much deserved as she poors her heart and soul into making everyone around her a better person and reaching their God given potential. Emily has one of the biggest hearts of anyone I know and it shows in everything she does. Always with a smile, Emily’s attitude and positive disposition is a rare commodity that not a lot of people have today. Great Job Emily, you make us proud by being an awesome ambassador of God on the earth today! You are amazing at what you do, your love and care for others is amazing! Keep up the good work. You always make every day a good one spreading a lot of love and Joy. Matt Jarvis

Mrs. Salter is one of the best friends you would ever need in your life. I met her while being a foster parent. She was always helpful and caring and kind. She gives her best every day no matter what. This lady is a very special person and I am lucky to have known her.

I supervised Emily in her first job after she graduated with her MSW. We worked with therapeutic foster children and Emily was an exceptional case manager. This was a challenging job that was extremely demanding. She provided intensive support for extremely vulnerable children and was very successful in forming positive bonds that were truly beneficial. She always showed great compassion and concern for the kids on her caseload. She always went above and beyond to make sure the children got what they needed and always had a genuine motivation to do what was right.

My mom is a life changer because she is kind and helps people every day. She gives me confidence when things are hard and tells me to never give up. She says not to get upset when I mess up because I’m learning and mistakes are a good thing. When they wanted to change my Connections program at school my mom fought really hard for it. She started a petition that 240 people signed! Then we stood up in front of the school board to tell them why they shouldn’t change. Even though they still changed it, we felt good for standing up for what we believed in. These are some of the reasons why I think my mom is a life changer.

Emily is one of the most beautiful and compassionate people I know! She always puts her students and follow teachers needs first! Time and time again I see how postive of an influence she’s had and continues to have, how incredibly blessed they are to have her and how she never settles for less when it comes to pushing for the best for her students. She deserve this recognition and so much more!!

When Emily was a toddler and on into grade school, she had a tough time with social anxiety. As she grew she seemed to grow stronger with self confidence year by year. As her father, I talked to her about my own struggles with being bullied when I was her age. The resulting anxiety caused me to have to repeat a grade. She began to understand how some kids felt being left out or bullied. She took it upon herself at this young age, to go the extra mile to make friends with kids who others would shun or bully. Emily began to learn how to help the bullied and the bullier. I see this as who she is not what she does.

I have know Emily since elementary school. I was not a very popular child. My parents were divorced, I didn't have the nicest clothes or shoes and to say the least my family wasn't well off financially. Despite these things that can be important to children socially Emily befriended me. She included me on retreats, camps, and church and school. I also spent a lot of time at the neeley house just spending time. She never judged me for what I didn't have but instead she saw a friend and someone who needed one. I got to know what it was like to sit around a table as a family ( even though I ate Emily's peas for her on many occasions ??) iI can still remember Friday night pizza nights and saving the crust for Saturday morning ccartoons. Shes such a big heart and I'm not surprised at her nomination. This is well deserved. Great job Emily June !!! Even if you don't win know that you were such a big part of my childhood and you made it so much better. ????????

There are many good teachers counselors and other professions out there. Highly educated and talented people. A lot of these people really caring about what you do and the lives they effect. Not only is Emily one of the most caring people I know she adds the one final ingredient to make her worthy of this honor, that is love.

Emily, my niece, has a heart of gold—kind and loving. Fortunately for all, she is able to take action from the purest of intentions—her instinct for compassion.

I've known Emily Salter for over two decades! She has one of the largest hearts of anyone I have met. She is kind, gentle, caring, and authentic. If anyone is deserving of this type of award, it is Emily. This is who she is, with or without an award. She will continue to be this person long after. I'm so very proud to call her a life long friend! Thank you for your time, Jenna

I have known Emily since grade school. We used to spend alot of our days together growing up. She was and always has been an honest, sincere, kind and compassionate person. Its no surprise at all the career path she chose. And all the time and dedication she puts in to the lives of the children that need her the most. There are many people that do their job and do it well. And there are a few, like Emily, that go well above and beyond. Just because its a part of who they are. Great job Emily!

My niece Emily is one of those people you feel could truly change the world. I see her face obstacles and immediately problem solve what's the next move. Step by step she finds a way to accomplish her intention, which is to bring not only relief from suffering but also happiness to those who are struggling. So many people give up in our challenging world, and Emily reaches out to provide stability and hope. Emily has is a deep compassion for those around her combined with a desire to make a positive difference. She is bright and eager to proceed and does not give up easily. She is a blessing to her family.

My friend Emily is like a second mother to my daughter, she is like a sister as much as she is my friend. Her sons are like my own. She is the warmest, kindest person I have ever met. We met when working on a Red Cross grant helping adolescent victims of Hurricane Katrina in Bay St Louis, MS in 2007. I was drawn to her gentleness and thoughtfulness with coworkers as well as students. She is one of those people who is described as “wise beyond her years.” When my daughter’s father died, it was a few months after Emily was dealing with deaths of students family members in her school community and had been creating materials to help them grieve. After his death she decided to write a book for elementary and middle school aged students like my daughter to help them grieve. It is a beautiful book and I have supported her in getting it published. She is a life changer for so many students but especially these fragile students who have experienced trauma and loss so early in life. I am blessed to have her in my life and honored to call her my friend.

Mrs. Salter was pivotal member of my team at the alternative school. In her three years as the counselor of that campus, we had no fights. This was largely due to the climate Ms. Salter helped to create through her weekly character building lessons and constant reinforcement throughout the week. The students loved her and many did not want to go back to their home schools because of the care they received from her. Mrs. Salter is a dedicated hard working staff member. She is an administrators dream employee because of how she cares for students and her fellow team members. She is most deserving of this designation.
