Mykel Estes was nominated anonymously.
Mr. Estes, a Campus Teacher of the Year and District Educator of the Year finalist, believes a positive classroom environment starts with relationships. Students need to know they're seen, valued, and respected every time they walk in the door. That means greeting them by name, noticing when something's off, and celebrating their wins—big or small.
Clear expectations are equally important. Students thrive when they know the boundaries, the routines, and that the rules are applied fairly to everyone. Consistency builds trust. Engagement matters, too. Lessons should be challenging, relevant, and allow students to have a voice.
Mr. Estes gives students choices when he can, encourages collaboration, and creates opportunities for them to take ownership of their learning. Finally, he models the culture he wants. If he shows kindness, respect, and a willingness to learn from mistakes, his students will follow. The classroom becomes a place where they support each other, push themselves, and celebrate growth together.
