Volante Henderson was nominated anonymously.
At the start of each school year, Mrs. Henderson dedicates the first two weeks to intentionally building strong relationships with families and students, laying the foundation for a positive, restorative classroom culture. Through open communication with parents and collaborative norm-setting with students, they co-create a learning environment rooted in trust, transparency, and celebration. Together, her class establishes non-negotiable norms centered on mutual respect, courage, and accountability.
These norms empower students to express themselves freely, embrace mistakes as part of growth, and challenge their own and each other's perspectives. This process fosters a brave space where critical thinking, emotional safety, and collective joy thrive. By prioritizing trust from day one, she creates a classroom where every voice matters and every learner feels supported to shine.
Mrs. Henderson celebrates achievements and affirms her students' worth every day! In her classroom, learning begins with belonging. She intentionally creates a space that radiates warmth, facts, and inspiration, decorated with resources funded from her household budget. For many of her students, especially those who are transient, this environment offers stability and dignity they may not experience elsewhere.
Without her direct intervention, the barriers her students face—such as inconsistent access to school supplies, technology, clothing, and food—can hinder their ability to learn and feel valued. When students arrive late and miss breakfast, she provides snacks to help them reset and re-engage. For those who lack basic clothing, she discreetly assists to ensure they are clean, comfortable, and confident. In the past, she and her husband have even refurbished and donated laptops and tablets from their home to bridge the digital divide.
These efforts aren't theoretical. They are daily, hands-on acts of care that prevent distractions, restore dignity, and boost academic focus. Without them, students may struggle silently, disengage from instruction, or internalize shame. But because of these interventions, they feel seen, supported, and ready to contribute to a classroom culture rooted in trust, celebration, and the freedom to grow.
Because of her efforts, Ms. Henderson was named the 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year for her school.
