As an Exceptional Children's teacher with over a decade of experience, Ms. Simmons creates a positive classroom environment by building trust and consistency. She establishes clear expectations and routines that provide structure and predictability, which is crucial for many of her students with exceptional needs. She focuses on student strengths, celebrates growth (not just outcomes), and models patience and empathy every day.

She utilizes visual support, flexible seating, and individualized behavior tools (like break cards or "fix-it" tickets) to promote emotional regulation and independence. She prioritizes strong relationships with her students, families, and general education staff so that every child feels safe, supported, and included. Her classroom is a space where students are empowered to take academic risks, advocate for themselves, and experience success on their terms.

Many of her students have learning disabilities and benefit tremendously from hands-on, engaging, and differentiated resources that go beyond paper-and-pencil tasks. For example, phonics tiles, tactile math manipulatives, a device stylus, and supplemental educational materials are essential for delivering instruction that meets them where they are academically. Many students she serves require movement breaks, sensory input, and visual support systems to stay engaged and access instruction.

Ms. Simmons was the Teacher Ambassador for her school for the 2023-24 school year.
