A classroom environment should make students feel welcomed, safe, emotionally supported, and empowered. When Ms. Tankersley's students walk into the classroom, she greets them by name and with warmth. Her main goal is to develop personal relationships with each student. Students need it, and they love predictable routines. Therefore, when students enter the classroom, she turns on a relaxation video, and the class meditates for three minutes.

She teaches the students about three of the brain states in simple ways: beta (alert/focused), alpha (calm), and theta (creative). The students are aware of how their brain feels after meditation, so they know what alpha feels like. She gives an example of beta by being very focused and alert. She tells them the brain is in a theta state right before going to sleep and as they awaken.

She also uses the stoplight approach, which consists of green brain, yellow brain, and red brain to help them realize which part of their brain they are using. The green brain (neocortex) is when students feel happy, proud, and on task. The yellow brain (limbic system) is when you feel frustrated or worried. The red brain (brain stem) is when they feel overwhelmed. Using these strategies helps students become aware of their brain states and nervous system. Teaching students self-regulation techniques gives them the tools they need to self-regulate, master themselves, and become the best version of themselves.

Many of her students come from environments with heightened stress or trauma. Incorporating self-regulation practices and materials supports their emotional well-being and improves their ability to learn a new language. In return, the students will be trained to share the practices they learn with their parents and teach their parents basic English skills.
